Manipled Mutineer
My grandfather served on RFA Brown Ranger during WW2 in the Arctic, in support of D-Day operations, and finally, via the Mediterranean, with the British Fleet Train in the Pacific. Various things have conspired to put the idea in my head of trying to make a model of her to give to him. As I wouldn't know where to start with scratch-building I'm writing in the hope that someone may know of a suitable kit I could look out for. Any help very gratefully accepted! Shar2
There is an unfortunate gap in model support ships and I don't think the Rangers have been released by anyone.
Test Graham
Sadly injection moulded oilers in 1/700 are usually Japanese and considerably larger. I don't suppose that converting one of these and claiming it as 1/500 would work! However there are a number of resin merchantmen smaller in size that possibly could be converted - it might be worth your while looking at the following sites for possible options. http://www.nikomodel.pl/index.php/en/ http://www.battlefleetmodels.com/id56.html http://home.earthlink.net/~loosecannonproductions/ I don't hold out much hope, but perhaps it's worth a try. You are up for a fair amount of work.
bootneck
The only model of a Ranger class of support ship, that I know of, was the tiny 1:1200 Fleetline kit, which was produced in the 1970's. It was made of white metal and, at that scale it is less than 2inches long. I have a model of it in my collection (somewhere) and can take a photo for you if you want to see it. cheers Mike
Manipled Mutineer
Many thanks all for your replies; I'll follow-up the leads given. Mike, a picture of your Fleetline would be much appreciated if you could.

bootneck
While checking through my collection, I realised that there were two producers of the Ranger class in 1:1200; one in white metal and the other in resin.. Fleetline produced a white metal version in the early 1970's but this company has been out of business for a few years. Some models can still be found at model ship shows and on the web. I can't remember who made the resin version. Herewith images of the two models of the Ranger class.
