jetboy
Hi,its sunday aft,ive got a pretty clean bench,so i thought id start this variation/prototype of the saturn programme, though not built,it was certainly planned and theorised. The first thing i noticed is how close it is to the new NASA launchers it is,it would look to me as though if this had been launched in the 60,s,where would we have progressed to by now?,Thats another debate?.anyway as a starting point for this kit im using an old version saturn 5 which i have cannabalised bits for other builds,,,heres some pics, there is a few variations you can build of this, but the difference is in the strap on,s[i refuse to write that bit thankyou}sorry just talking to my self.As i said the difference is only in the amount of stages on the boosters and how many are added.im going for the largest version 4 boosters,7 stages...heres the bits and start.. the booster bits different stages etc or or the one im doing the other resin bits the other bits needed v ive started to split the saturn, only because i want to put martins resin conversion tank cover in as it has more detail than the kit one.. removing engines and tank top, ready for the new resin base and tank where new base goes and where the engines will sit left over bits will be used else where? right off to do a bit more cheers Don
Troffa
Nice subject, not one I am familiar with- looks like plenty of work with cleaning up the boosters! Is that Kurt Cobain looking on?
jetboy
Nice subject, not one I am familiar with- looks like plenty of work with cleaning up the boosters! Is that Kurt Cobain looking on? Hi T,that is kurt doing his mtv unplugged, only ive put him in a comfy armchair, cos its gonna be a long haul, the afforementioned boosters? but thats the fun of it, though i did get fed up in the end,and have gone to mechanical methods, sanding on glass just doesnt do it for me? cheers Don
Mike
Looks rather interesting - just one of many proposals from mister Von Braun's team, I'm sure
jetboy
a few more photos,as i said i got bored with the hand sanding, the following photos are for example only and removing guards and eye protection from revolving machinery is not to copied,as it can lead to serious injuries,so do as i say not as i do..cheers Don this is mm,s resin version of the fuel tank top,it has more detail than the kit version. well tried sanding by hand so got mechanical a bit of filling with decorators caulk, remove the adhering skin,[human ] doesnt look too bad gillian says its ok,that will do for me,three more to do. cheers Don
jetboy
Looks rather interesting - just one of many proposals from mister Von Braun's team, I'm sure hi mike, yes its from vo braun,s apollo team, this would have been the way NASA went only funding was cut after the moon episodes,as all the technology and production was already in place, due to saturn....mister V B,no its Werhner to his desciples?lol..cheers Don... jetboy
Hi enough for sun night now,i cannot do any more anyway, need to paint and purchase a block2 capsule off a very nice man,who lives nearby.so heres all the pics for today, the extreme sanding worked ok,i will be using that method again very soon i can assure you.You will see on the pics they have turned out ok with a bit of caulk, and a quick rub, with them foam sanding blocks,5 for a quid, cant beat that.Anyway waiting for resin pieces will give me a bit of time to finish the other ones ive started..heres the pics so far... gillian giving me a hand with the add on thrusters cleaning up the old kit in prep trying for size tank top trying for size boosters dont look too bad give them a clean up,before painting what its going to look something like paint cleaning up boosters cannot do anymore so back to other ones, whilst i await parts enjoy Don

MartG
Hi Don - it looks like it's coming on nicely I reckon using your sanding machine it should be easier to get the mating faces of the boosters square than doing it by hand ( like I do - it takes AGES ! )
jetboy
HI,thought it was about time for an update on this build,as ive been saving parts up to paint in one go,less paint, less cleaning lol.Anyway most of this is masking/painting/masking...have a look.and let me know what you think,good/bad/indifferent,ive got thick skin?lol... here we go,priming/painting clusters... so you end up something like this.. a bit of detailing?lol and a few spare decals, just three more to do.. its looking a bit more like it cheers Don
jetboy
Hi,a few more updated pics of this ongoing project.... thats all the boosters finished... painting the retros and vents etc silver painting base up... these are the add on booster/injectors,as the prototype was not designed with gimballed engines for steering instead these injected into the booster stream? trying first engine fitting booster support blocks on theres one just giving the paint a scrape with the dremel to ensure good adhesion? theres two trying upper stage,to see if it fits.... Theres no three not looking too bad,if a bit different i,ll just carry on,thanks for looking...cheers Don
jetboy
HI,its looking more like a rocket should.......?heres a few more pics on progress.... put a few decals on main body, before the fourth booster is fitted... touching up ,the motors and assistors? thats how a rocket should look?its getting a bit awkward to hold now,so am going to make the base to help, hold it whilst i do the upper stages.. plinth, tripod leg,dowel.... try it for fit on the base, cos it has a bit of overhang on this one.. drill pilot hole, and enlarge for wood dowel shave it down for tight fit.. holding screw, underneath to dowell sleeving for dowell Due to the engine configuration on this one, also its cogravity,im going to fasten this one through the centre engine so have pre drilled third one along cheers, thanks for looking....Don
jetboy
Hi,just a few more photo,s of the build, then it will be on the finished section....heres a few of up to the minute, just getting base ready, and final csm stage, and payload?...thanks for sticking with it,i,ll do a bit of history, and what it is,the proposal,s etc,in the finished section...so heres the last few pics,in here?... just positioning the sea level battened J2 engines...and the holding screw has been cut off and screwed into the base... getting a few bases painted J2engines in place.... screwed on its stand, very stable, will make it easier to complete the upper stage?and put the fourth booster on.... might of allowed too much clearence there, might shorten the dowel yet? just seeing what payloads it can take?lol llooking somewhere like it should? OK,THERE WILL JUST BE A FEW MORE OF THE LAST BOOSTER FITTED ETC,THEN IM CALLING IT DONE.......CHEERS DON
