1/48 Cyber Hobby He-162 +++FINISHED+++

Recommended Posts

Hi all

The 262 is nearly done, so I thought I would have a go at this too...the Cyber Hobby He-162 Salamander. It looks a nice kit and after reading Mike's in-box review I thought "why not?"

Obligatory box shot

And the sprues

It's not a big a/c so it'll be a nice little project and my 5th German a/c this year - not bad for a US builder!

It's OK - I have a torch with me! This kit is a little cracker, a bit over-engineered maybe in places but good so far. I'll post some pics later

I was able to get on with some modelling today and got to grips with this little a/c.

Started by spraying all the 'internals' with RLM 02 as per the instructions although my gut says RLM 66 as a late war airframe - however I went with 02. Cockpit was then given a Flory wash. The gun breaches were glued in place and some minimal instrument panels (they were quite basic a/c!

001-1_zpsb6b7f5f0.jpg

The IP is etch and this had the instruments picked out in black and the dials given a faint dry-brush. The seat cushions were painted Olive Green and the seat glued together including seat handles. The central hump (on the left is the wheel well including glass panel to see the retraction gear

The main u/c assembly was incredibly fiddly being part plastic and part etch. A little over-engineered but very effective when done right

004-2_zps8f0119c6.jpg

So...managed to get everything lined up and glued the fuselage halves together - I'm glad a did some dry-fitting with the wheel well as the fit is very tight. The instructions don't mention weight and there is very little room in the nose but there is a handy are just behind the seat and two fishing sinkers were glued in there

Before tackling the seams, I couldn't resist dry-fitting the wings! Over on Modeling Madness there is a good build review which mentions the very 'approximate' fit of the port wing and that's apparent here...

There is a fix for it but that will be tackled later. I then added the wheel well structure and dry fitted the ejection seat (with wine bottle foil belts). A nice, neat fit

007-1_zpse1e1465b.jpg

The tail cone is a separate piece as you can model the A (as here) or the butterfly tailed C. The fit was poor and needed a lot of filler which has been sanded back

008_zps6e490e58.jpg

There was some filling to do...looks worse than it is - I lathered the green stuff on here! The tail unit is now glued on and this will need quite a bit of filler too. The wheel well cover has been separated from the door and fits nicely

I have also painted the wheels and tyres. I have masked the clear parts. I am not doing this with an open engine - I may buy another of these kits and do just that as the detail is superb including the etch piano hinges for the clamshell engine panels.

I'm enjoying this one! Thanks for looking

Thanks Mish, Rob and Arnie! Tail and wings are on tonight (pics tomorrow) and there is that nasty gap to sort out. I have also glued the engine housing but I can leave it off for painting and add afterwards

It looks like its RLM 76/81/82 for me in a uniform-non-masking-type-scheme although I've seen blotch-y mottle-y efforts on other respectable websites...

Next update - things are moving apace...

The wings and the rudders/fins are now glued on. The troublesome port wing gap was partly solved by some sanding of the lower wing root which brought it far enough in to be filled without using styrene rod

001-1_zpsf4b26b26.jpg

Next up was the engine mount and cover - nicely engineered so that I can paint this separately and attach after - here it is dry-fitted

002-2_zpsa51787be.jpg

003-1_zpsc53b86bd.jpg

Glued and fitted the rudder pedal frame to the tines at the rear of the IP coaming

004-2_zps18f1fe1a.jpg

And once dried this was a snug drop-fit into locators at the front of the cockpit

005-1_zps4fba20aa.jpg

The RLM 02 was touched up by brush to hide the glue marks and then the suitable masked up windscreen was glued in place using Gator Grip glue.

I can then start to mask the rest of the canopy and the u/c wells ready for priming - I can then think about schemes. Thanks for looking!

Whoo, that was lucky clicked on BM and it worked!

In the absence of said website - have had the airbrush out. The colour call-out for the kit decals is RLM 76/81/82 so that's hwat I'm going for

So...sanded, primed and pre-shaded...

001-1_zpsb9bc7ba4.jpg

The started painting the suggested scheme - no mottle but Braunviolett to the port wing/tail/fin and all fuselage and Hellgrun to starboard wing, tail/fin and engine pod...

002-2_zps85fdf84f.jpg

Blu tac sausages for masking to fuselage. I'm going to do an a/c from 3./JG 1 which had a white nose rather than the usual arrow marking - just looked different...

003-1_zps03b80482.jpg

The pitot tube is on and since this pic was taken she has had a coat of Alclad Gloss. She has also had the intake lip painted red and the scissor links applied to the u/c.

Hope this will be finished in the next day or so...thanks for looking

looking really nice, I’ve never build a 162, but after seeing yours I’m quite tempted......if I can find the time..

After looking at you scheme with 81/82 colour, the differentiation between the colours compared to mine it is a bit more noticeable. I hope my paints were ok, they were brand new and colour matched other bottles I had. Your 81 looks like the colour I have but the 82 looks to be a bit lighter than mine, suspect mine may be a bit on the dark side plus it gave me trouble while painting!

noticed the site was down, only just got my update in and it broke so went to bed........hope it wasn't me!

You should - this little Cyber Hobby/Dragon kit is ace! Great detail and a quick build for such a small kit, Rich

Looking good Andy :)

Thanks mate

And the plan was to train the Hitler Youth on gliders and let them loose with these...

Realy nice build.

Scary isn't it, although Eric Brown apparently said it was a lovely plane to fly - I think the transition form glider to Salamander would have been...ummm...interesting!

If I am correctly there would be some gliders from the He 162. It was called the He 162S (S is for Schule (school). These were without a engine and towed behind a Bf-110.

Cheers,

I think you are right Arnold - however I'm not sure I would want to fly the 162 as a glider with those tiny wings :yikes:

I think you should...the Tamiya kit is s'posed to be nice - I couldn't find too many reviews on-line of this one - the majority are Tamiya's. I think the design was sound - it was just let down by the engines and a lack of available fuel and skilled pilots

Me neither! But I don't think they would be let lose behind the 110 just before the landing.
