mekon
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/21321230 At least it's Weta so maybe ok? Not sure how this will pan out but there were rumours for some time this was in the pipeline.
thx6667
"ITV and children's channel CiTV will broadcast the new series in 26 half-hour episodes." What like they did with New Captain Scarlet?
pigsty
The remade Captain Scarlet was surprisingly good, what little I saw of it. The movie of Thunderbirds was utter crap. The key difference is to accept that something that works as 45-60 minute one-offs can't always be stretched to two hours or more without a great deal of care. So if Weta are doing a series, it may do quite well. Of course, so much depends on the scripts, which reports like this generally treat as optional extras. thx6667
New Captain Scarlet was great, I have it on DVD! But what left a sour taste, especially with GA, was the way ITV treated the show - this quote from Wikipedia seems to reference the BBC Radio Five Live interview with GA from a couple of years back: ITV chose to air the series on the Saturday Morning entertainment show Ministry of Mayhem, which disappointed Gerry Anderson. "They took my half-hour show, cut the titles off and cut it in half. It wasn't even listed so people who watched Ministry of Mayhem had to wait and watch all the nonsense going on before the first half. When it finished they didn't say there was a second half or when it was going to start. After they had shown all the episodes, legally it had to be cited as a repeat so it never had a premiere. It just broke my heart."[3] Episodes were aired in the order they were completed in, meaning that the series finale aired as the penultimate instalment. This is because an alternative episode had to be made after one was abandoned because Gerry Anderson thought it was too scary for younger children. thx6667
I'm intrigued by "Thunderbirds Are Go! will broadcast on ITV in 2015 and will feature CGI animation and live-action model sets." Does the latter mean the Weta guys are going to blow stuff up for real rather than CGI?
roymattblack
As far as I'm concerned, this is fantastic news.I was an 'old school' cell animator and did work for the BBC donkeys years ago, and have always had a big interest in Cinema special effects. I've subscribed to the amazing magazine 'Cinefex' for years.ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) have been the movie S. FX. fore-runners for years but since Lord of the Rings, Weta have pretty much stolen the crown. If they have ANYTHING to do with the new Thunderbirds, It's pretty much a 'given' that it will be bl--dy fantastic!Roll on the new Thunderbirds, but how sad that Gerry Anderson won't see it, or be a part of it.Hopefully, he'll still get his name in the credits, like Gene Roddenberry still does with the new Star Trek movies. HL-10
Would love to see a decent remake of Thunderbirds, but sorry to be cynical, I'll believe it when I see it. The people who own the rights have proved the biggest barrier to other attempts at remakes.
Enzo the Magnificent
Does the latter mean the Weta guys are going to blow stuff up for real rather than CGI?Hopefully with good old-fashioned Anderson style explosive overkill!
Albeback52
I'll reserve judgement. I personally thought the CGI version of Captain Scarlet was dreadful & not a patch on the original. Hopefully the CGI has improved. My biggest disappoointment is the episodes are only 30 minutes long. With the original series it took the 50 - 60 minute running time to develop & build up a great story. However, comparisons are inevitable. I'll watch it of course! roymattblack
I must admit I too thought the new Captain Scarlet CGI was among the WORST I've ever seen. Utterly wooden characters, virtually NO movement apart from the odd bit of lip synching and clothing that was made of unmoving sheet metal! Yes, the sets, buildings, vehicles etc were pretty good, but people???? NO! I have no doubts that WETA won't be ANYTHING like that, although I'm a realist, and I'll be surprised if they do it 'Gollum' style! And yes - 30 mins is too short, bearing in mind it will actually be 25 mins when the ad break is allowed for, and nearer 20 mins when the start and end credits are removed....... Roy. gregg136
Hopefully with good old-fashioned Anderson style explosive overkill! Hopefully the small explosions at sea create huge tsunami's that swamp the camera just like the original Although if they go near my beloved "Seascape" there'll be hell to pay
thx6667
Hopefully with good old-fashioned Anderson style explosive overkill! One would hope that's exactly their thinking, that nothing beats explosions than real explosions, especially in the cathartic "let's blow the crap out of this stuff" that VFX crews tend to enjoy. PoppaMoomin
There are stil a few studio modelmakers out there who would be delighted to take part in a new series. Hopefully there will be zero CGI and 100% action. Just my opinion.
Major Eazy
I like both the classic Captain Scarlet and the New Captain Scarlet, either way is fine with me. I like the classic Thunderbirds, but not the live-action Thunderbirds movie as it was kind of ruined, because it seems to be all about Alan Tracy and not about the rest of the Tracy brothers, and not only that, but it focus too much on Alan and Tin-Tin in a way as if the movie seems to feel more like it is like a kids movie. Sort of like the live-action movie being like 'M.I.High' comparing to the classic Thunderbirds being 'Spooks' if you understand what I'm trying to say? So if there is going to be a new Thunderbirds series, I hope it gets back to focusing on all of the Tracy brothers as they should be, young adults, as their proper ages as in the classic, not focus on too much on Alan or turn it into 'M.I.High' version. roymattblack
The Thunderbirds movie was excellently reviewed by Gerry Anderson himself - 'Biggest load of Cr@p ever...' I've NEVER seen or heard of ANYONE who thought it was any good. Will Frakes may have directed a few decent Star Trek TV episodes, but he uttely wrecked the whole Thunderbirds movie franchise idea pretty much for all time which is a real shame as, if you think about it, there couldn't be a much better idea for a whole string of mega-budget action movie with the same kind of FX as the new 'Trek' movies. Just imagine a $2-300,000,000 Thunderbirds film! If only, one day. For now, a new TV series makes me happy as long as it is a continuation of the old format, NOT a cruddy kids special, like the last film..... Roy.
