Airfix Chippie

Hi Everyone.

After a long time lurking in the shadows and being generally blown away with the standard of modelling seen here, I felt it was time to have a go myself. So here is my 1st attempt at sticking plastic bits together since I was a lad (a long time ago!)

This incorporates several things new to me so is a real learning project. For example this is the first time I've attempted:

masking

using super glue on a model

cutting/repositioning parts

airbrushing

using decal solutions

priming & clear coating

& probably many others!!

I took some inspiration from the article by Mike Grant in the 'Circuits & Bumps' book - although I'm some way from achieving what he has!

There are a miriad of mistakes & beginners errors (such as thumb prints in the still tacky paint) but I am treating this as a learning process & finding the same levels of enjoyment in modelling a I did when I was a kid.

Comments & helpful hints gratefully received!

Thanks everyone!

My photography & choice of camera angles has hidden the worst of my offences (torn decal, thumb print on tail plane, pook masking on fuselage stripe etc) but I'm quite pleased.

Anyway - on to something else, probably Airfix's 1/72 Hawk.......

I reckon you've made a great start there, your chippie looks great. You've also chosen an excellent guide in Mike Grant, he's one of the best and most creative modellers out there. Good luck with the hawk, if its the new one you'll really enjoy it, I think.

Steve.

You critique yourself too hard. There is Mike Grant and then there are us mortal model builders. You have tried loads of new stuff and if you have learned something about any one of them then it has been a success. From the pics I would say you have been successful across the board, lovely Chippie.

That looks really nice, Edge and I'd like to replicate the paint job. Excellent stuff! I really like the paint scheme.

Can I make a couple of wee suggestions please?

You're posting pics of a 1/72 model at a size that would show up any flaw in a 1/24 scale kit, never mind 1/72 . Make smaller pics, for 1/72 I'd suggest 600 x 400 or something just slightly larger. Another idea is to put a Tamiya paint pot or something similar next to the model to give an impression of scale (a finger is a good measurement).

On the front left panel of the canopy there's a slightly ragged paint line at the top. That could be carefully sliced with a new scalpel blade and the paint scraped off with a sharpened tooth pick. It does actually work and as long as you don't scrape too hard won't damage the surface beneath.

Not criticisms, just trying to help. You've done a cracking job on what is a very small model and that's a very, very neat paint job!

<Edit>

Almost as soon as I posted this I came across a small picture example about three posts down. This superb, cracking dio is of a 1/24 scale rusty car:
