Fantastic, now we can build all the short nose J79 powered F-4s (except the slatted F-4S) by 'borrowing' one sprue from the F-4B until their F-4J appears.

I'm surprised at the choice of markings though; a Korean F-4D would have seemed to be the more obvious option for the first 'land' version so as to maximise sales in the home market. I also hope it's not a MCP kit - the thought of that one piece fuselage in brown doesn't bear thinking about...

Fortunately we have primer for that.

There'll still be the shock when you open the box!

Whatever the plastic's colour, I can now do my planned mini-project of the first and last F-4 MiG Killers from both the USAF and USN, as well as the other various F-4C/D options in my decal stash. Hopefully this release will see some of the more colourful ANG schemes being produced by the decal manufacturers.

If that's it for the decals, surely they must be havin' a giraffe!?

Rumours persist he downed 2 Vietnamese MIg 17s by looking at them in a disapproving fashion.....

I thought I was in enough trouble with all the sheets Furball & Caracal were releasing for the Academy kits and now Afterburner have risen again under a new name - SpeedHunter, their first release looks to be a cracker and means I'm gonna need more of these kits...

And it's only Pt I.

And if you have not yet read Fighter Pilot by Robin Olds, I suggest you do so at the earliest opportunity. One of the finest fighter pilots that ever lived.

If I'm right, I believe the photo was one of those taken before he flew the last 'official' sortie of his 100-mission tour.

It's not Afterburner according to Zone Five. It's Jake Melampy's (known for his reference books) first decalsheet in fact.

Not sure that it's actually out yet but, will it be possible to build this as a D? I have seen how the Revell kit is a C/D so just hoped that Academy's would only require a set of new decals to get a D.

It's out in Asia.

There is also a F-4D kit out but only for Korean market (#12300 available on ebay).

I have both the C and D kit and the only difference is Photo etch for formation (slime) lights included in the D kit only. Both kits come with the same plastic sprues and the same huge decal sheet for stencils. The kit specific decals come on a small sheet.

So yes you can build a D out of the C kit if you have decal formation lights with your new decals.
