keefr22
brilliant now I need the serial numbers for a dark helicopter greeny one and it'll be job doneLike this one; I couldn't get an overall shot of it, but just had a look at there's plenty on Airliners.net I've got a few (!) more detail shots, airframe, interior, flightdeck etc. If you want them can you drop me a PM with your e-mail address so I can send them direct to you, as I'm fed up with all the faffing about with photobucket...!! keef
perdu
yerrsss Just like that! That's great Keef, PM winging its way soon as I work out how to I get totally annoyed with PB myself, slow and overlongwinded It's a shame the site doesn't handle direct linking, but what must be must be... I won't be extra detailing this, that will be for another build, because I rather like Pumas. NOW. The competition is to make what we picked out of a big black bin bag lucky dip at the Christmas meet, I don't have time to superdetail nor inclinantion yet. February meeting deadline or extra dosh to chariddee I didnt choose Puma, it chose me b

perdu
Well I am still not back on to Sherpa fully yet, but I am remembering why I hate kit "transparencies" Almost none of the Airfix greenhouse fits together, I'm having to beat it into submission, thrash it to within an inch of MY life And this was supposed to be a quick, therapeutic, hardly any modifications build Thanks to Keith's fab pictures I have enough to make a really decent job on the next Puma, this one will just be basic, only seat belts for the driver and his mate etcetera. But some of those details Keith sent just HAVE to go on it and the filters, gotta have the filters And Sunday is very near now Sherpa now has a better roof over the upper bits and is being set up for a pair of P&W PT6As, in quiet moments I'm turning Airfix F4 drop tank noses into spinners for them I think I will be adding the fin/rudder units later this week, she will be looking far more Shortsish with a pair of huge square fins overhanging the back end. Pictures when I do, even if the blo*dy Puma isnt done. Life's not long enough to hang about. bill
perdu
I did a little work on the upper fuselage skin, chopped all the five thou card off and replaced it with ten thou and that seems to have done the trick. Here's the new skin on top of the fuselage and inner wing area. It's the inner wing area that caused the difficulty. It is flat across from the dihedral break outboard of the PT6As, one side to t'other and includes the upper fuselage over the fuel tanks. (yes that would have probably have worrited me a tad if I'd ever been lucky enough to 'fly Sherpa' but isn't known to have caused any real problems that I have heard of... Milliput into the corners to allow radiusing when dried out, slots cut out for NACA ducts and ventilation grilles. And after radiussing I got this. Which is basically where I am at now because it is Hospice kit weekend at the club. People (in the club) donate a kit or 'some' from their stash, usually something they wish they hadn't bought, and wrap it as a Christmas present. These come in to the club at the Christmas meeting and we pay a few quid for a rummage in a big black sack. Then we have to build what we 'chose' and present it finished at the February meeting... I won my Puma, I was lucky, some truly bizzare kits have surfaced at these meetings. The kit needs to be finished fit for a display and judging session, so it's not just a throw it together effort If anyone misses the meeting or doesnt finish his model there is another mandatory donation to make Al the proceeds of this event go to the Children's Hospice so nobody minds too much about being fined Except ME So thanks almost entirely to Keefr here is 'wot I dun for the Hospice comp' All the decals were home brews, the Royal Air Force logo on the door came from a google search via Paintshop Pro and clear decal paper, the serial numbers were made in MS Word, changing font sizes and colours to give the essential, washed out black-ey grey colour. Not a great picture but there will be a RFI later on, so I'll try for a better couple of pictures, specially 'cos I'm a bit chiuffed with the nose array that Keith sent a few pictures of. I tried out Nobby's idea of using Solar trim on this model, blooming magic, I even used it to represent some of the upper panelling around the filters. I had to build this in a hurry because I only started as Keith was sending me the vital photos. As Mrs P is suffering an even worserererer cold/flu thing than me I had to take the modelling work to the garage. Blimey, talk about cold and cramped... Here's my workbench for the Puma can you see what it is yet? Here she is, my trusty steed that takes me to Le Mans every year My 1966 MG Midget Anyway after this I expect to take a few days off modelling and hope to get rid of my cold symptoms Yeukk I hate blocked up everythings Cheers hope you like this diversion, back soon bill Edited February 18, 2018 by perdu
Nobby
Hey Bill! Glad i've been of use to some one out there! Glad you like the Solar trim tip as well! keefr22
So thanks almost entirely to Keefr here is 'wot I dun for the Hospice comp' bill Come off it Bill, all I did was send you a few piccies - it was your modelling talent that produced that little beauty, especially given the circumstances you were working in....!! But I have to say that you should be ashamed - you could at least give your lovely Midget a blanket or curtain to cover her bonnet & roof to stop her getting scratched or, worse still, have a tinlet of bright red Humbrol or somesuch spilt on her!! But I can't talk, somewhere under this lot is a 1979 Mini Clubman!! My excuse is I'm in the middle of clearing out the garage so that my son can get at her to weld the roll cage in properly! Anyway, that is a lovely little Puma & I'm glad the pics were of help! Hope you get better soon. Keith
perdu
Cheers chaps Cover her up? I wouldn't be able to use her if I did that would I ? I am a bit careful with her roof but to be honest she (Lara is her moniker) has always been a spare shelf when not in use, it all lifts away quite easily and parks on the oil stained floor where she is gone from As it will this afternoon when I go to t'club Seing Keith's garage does give me heart though, maybe mine will get tidied too some far off day Woody I've been going to The 24heures since 2003 when I saw the two Bentleys wipe the floor with every other car on the track Getting lost driving through France is the origin of my name Perdu, sh** happens and Bill gets lost in France bill Edited February 17, 2013 by perdu

Lovely afternoon down here to take the Mini out - except that her exhaust is knacked, battery's as flat as a pancake & she's buried under half a ton of junk.... perdu
Kind of you to say that and boost an old geezer's ego, but honestly not very good work just a determination that there's no problem we cant fix and find a workaround for. No kit? No worries there are pictures and plans to play with. And God/Slater's gives us plasticard. My work is untidy even at best unlike most of my heroes in here. You all turn out far better finished models than me. I had a great drive around Brum this afternoon and this evening, my exhaust is sounding a littlle more raucous these days, might need to change it before I head for La Belle Patrie this June. Long drives with it are getting a bit tiresome. Puma got 16 out of 20 available points, testing lot my club... but the Airfix transparencies simply don't fit proper-like, mould-yer-own next time. perdu
I've been laying off modelling this week because I think the cyano fumes are adding misery to the awful "cold" I am going through But you just can't stop entirely can you chaps  I have done a bit on the Sherpa set the brake backplates on the axles and begun getting the sponson outers ready to fit next week when the "Modelling holiday" (she calls it) is over and hopefully the cold too That Evergreen rod isnt the axle, honest, just a keep 'em aligned device I've stuck a piece of cut off rod to the backplates to represent the working bits, no decent photos about so just an idea of brake caliper cylinders for now Been trying other things too whilst waiting to get better Solartrim as surface detailing, here around one of the emergency exit doors, if this looks OK when I give the cleaned up model a dusting of primer I will have a nother "Thanks Nobby" on my tally Solartrim seems to be about three thou thick/thin, it may save me adding detail by engraving it on, though this is still my favourite method This year Anyway More next week maybe cheers bill Edited February 17, 2018 by perdu

woody37
Hi Bill, I moved to the new solvent free super glue last year. Takes a little longer to bite (which can benefit for positioning), but no more hayfever, well worth a go Was there too when the Bentleys won too, showering in an icebox was as good as the facilties got inside the circuit !
perdu
Showering? At Le Mans, wow We always dash for a hotel we know in Bagnolles De L'Orme after the end of the race, then we shower(three times!), change into decent clobber and dine at a favourite French restaurant overlooking Bagnolle's lovely little lake. Makes a real change from brutal trackside "living", which has improved rather a lot over those days. Except for the queues for the loos... Do you have a name for the Superglue you use, mine started the congestion crap off again last night, only had the cap off for a few seconds AND wore a dust and particle mask in hope of protection Oh well on and up hey Cheers b
perdu
Okay, back again, feeling a bit better I resumed the model by beginning to scribe and "lift" the panels and stiffeners out of the flat blank plasticard All of these can be found on the drawings and are very prominent on any photos of Sherpas (and 330/360s too) I mark them off with a 4B pencil and gently scrape away the "lower"panels from the higher outer ones, you will see in a mo' what I mean But first I fitted the tail ramp to test the fit, it slipped in so well it doesnt want to come out So I may just leave it in there  Apologies for the blurry pictures I need to learn to use the tripod, stupid not doing so Bill promises to improve before this build is ended...honest Now here is one of the panel detail sections, starboard emergency exit/loading door area rear end Stiffeners are shown rough here, they will get a slight Micromeshing to take of the nibs and flatten the knife tip scratches left whilst carving the unwanted plastic away White areas by the smudged pencil show the areas scraped away, smudges denote (posh hey) the original surfaces Would you believe this is supposed to have been reduced in size by Photobucketof...? Talk about annoying Here's the same treatment on the port forward entry door, still needing refining but the method is quite easy to see Gentle sanding will shift the line features left by the knife tip Similar features around the starboard emergency hatch area too, I think it shows quite well here with a couple of superimposed panels in one place Solartrim hatch surrounded by a few different layers of metal, should look pretty good when painted. It will not (does not) look as awful to the naked eye at viewing level, honest. I have been fettling the wing struts out of 90 thou plastic, had to glue 60 and 30 thou strips together then carve in the old fashioned way when dry Blurry out of focus shot, I will try to be better chaps honest Finally as reward for sticking with me so long I stuck the fins on tonight, which was why I had to hurry up with the fuselage detailing, now the bulk of the visible detailing is done there's reduced risk of knocking them off as we get to placing the engines this week. A few more weeks at my glacial progress and it will be next door in "Hey Guys Laugh At This One" I will make a nicer picture tomorrow, decent backgound and such, this can be discarded then anyway, struts next later chaps, sithee bill Edited February 18, 2018 by perdu
keefr22
Looking really good Bill! And the picture size looks fine on my monitor - little small if anything! I'm also alergic to superglue having very similar symptoms to yours. I used to get round it by using a twin filter paint spraying mask, but that got a bit wearing, so I tried this stuff; https://railsofsheffield.com/deluxe-materials-roket-odourless-super-glue-ad-46-JJJA16231.aspx Touch wood I've not had any problems with using it without any form of mask. It doesn't seem to stick as quickly as 'normal' superglue so I almost always use their accelerator with it too. I haven't bought it from the place I linked to, they were just the first to come up when I googled the stuff. I normally get it direct from Deluxe at Telford. keef
perdu
Thanks Keith, I will look out for that stuff, seems like a worthwhile approach I wish there was stinkless poly adhesive too, My missus is determined to be as awkward as she can about stinks and her asthma I do sympathise but ...... Some better pics tomorrow when I can set up the camera and background sheet cheers b
perdu
Okayyy I took somemore pictures which I hope are clearer, showing the raised and engraved detail on the fuselage Left side from rear   the depth of engraving does not show well, but I think it will be OK with a few thin layers of colour on top If not I will release plan B, just engrave the locations with Mr Swann-Morton's number one blade I have added some Milliput over the orrible roof area so I can bring the upper surfaces to a suitable close I want to be painting this soon, SWWSMBO is giving me too much "of this" Started fitting the wheels ready to have the sponsons closed up, more Milliputtery to smoooth them now enclosed , then props to make (10 @ 0.6875" long equals about a seven inch length, sometime this week) and spinners to finish  oh arr forgot to mention sticking the Pratt And Witneys PT6As on too Looks a bit more like now Night for now chaps, won't be too long now bill Edited February 18, 2018 by perdu
spiton
Very interesting project. I thought about doing this model using the Airfix Skyvan, but the differences are large.
perdu
I agree with you Spiton, not worth ruining a Budgie to make a Sherpa when there is so much extra work to do, though I've heard of someone doing it. Well, since the P&Ws went on I have not been entirely happy with the wings, looks like the AOA is wrong, borne out by the fence at the extreme end seeming to fly uphill when the airframe is flying level. Having engines just confirmed the problem to me. Look at the picture, the engines (which are correctly set under the wings) should look as if they are pulling forward not upward) Obviously the whole shebang is as untidy as the proverbial ragman's trumpet. The effect of a dodgy angle of attack looks nasty and I just won't like it if I leave it. Most people won't see anything wrong, but to those in the know it will stand out shouting rude and definitely unwelcome words (for in here) to the world So  X-acto comes in to rectify the situation Tomorrow or thursday I will be adding a fifteen thou shim of polycard to the wing root section, drilling a hole for a stiffener for each side and bunging it all together with the AOA put right I am sure the idea of this WIP thread is to show and tell, so this is me tonight But in other news the Perdflugzeugwerk.PDSA (and bar) is happy to announce that this evening the first of ten propblades has been carved from a blank reday to act as a pattern for its mates A small amount of polishing and fettleising will leave IT ready. The blade doesnt look exactly symmetrical in photos but I'm sure it must be. Trim time now nine to go Night all bill
