krow113 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 (edited) Testors 1/25 Jade Grenade . One of the Jimmy Flintstone contributions to the Testors lineup. I did start it a while ago but I am well under the 25% mark. So we got resin , p/e , and white metal. Really bad instructions and 2 grainy pix of the completed prototype to work from. The redeeming quality? A fine rendition of a Panhead Harley engine. I usually do a build sheet to keep things in order. I am not a fan of 'heavy' body work on custom bikes ,but Harley models are few and far between , so I grab the ones I can. Tjis one could stand some serious trimming but I kept it to trimming off the 'duckbills' on the fenders and smoothing out the fairing. Here are the parts marked for removal: I'll be working on this for the next few days .I am going to do a green mettallic/metalflake paint job. Edited January 18, 2013 by krow113
wkennerley Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Great, I was hoping we would get another Harley in the GB, I have never seen this one before so I am looking forward to seeing it come together wayne
heloman1 Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 Well that looks rather tasty for a Harley, I do hope you are going to cover it in some suitably gawdy colour (JJ)? As to Waynes question above, I've got a Revell RM Custon Torch kit which I've done a little work on. Which if I get the Kwaka done I might have a go at. On and aside, it's a god job Revell don't make their car kits to the same samelessly shoddy standard, they would soon be out of business. If I'd known what was in the box i'd have left it on the shelf. Colin
rkennerley Posted January 18, 2013 Posted January 18, 2013 now there is a good looking bike can't wait to see it finished
krow113 Posted January 18, 2013 Author Posted January 18, 2013 Thanks boys , metalflake green not gawdy enough heloman? The Revell kits get good reps , I have them all ,they are Harley 'clones' , but with the extra wheels and custom parts represent good value as all Revell kits do. I've never built one I prefer the larger scales, with the obvious exception here. I do have plans to go over them showing how to add details and make them look a little more realistic , but not for a while. The white metal for this kit is borderline , soft and hard to polish. The forks are not useable being twisted hopelessly. I made new tubes from .080" stainless tubing. I also drilled out the wheels to have a 1 piece axle. The headlight clear resin is in the bin as well , I drilled the fairing for MV lenses and will have to fab a clear acetate lens .
D1fuN0 Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 That, Krow, is way cool... I always thought that the shape of the Jade Grenade would be something along the lines of what an Indian would look like if they made them today Looking forward to seeing this finished. Steve
CliffB Posted January 19, 2013 Posted January 19, 2013 Looks like this will be a bit of a 'mission', but gorgeous when done Cliff
krow113 Posted January 19, 2013 Author Posted January 19, 2013 Oh she be a mission alright. Thanks men. I did manage to polish most of the white metal ,lots of surface removal to get through the pitting. And prolly the ugliest frame ever ,gladly to be covered with the large body work:
krow113 Posted January 20, 2013 Author Posted January 20, 2013 (edited) Some color , black on the frame and Tamiya clear green on the engine and tranny. Some deft work with a small q-tip and some thinner will cleanup the green. The parts were polished first. Edited January 20, 2013 by krow113
krow113 Posted January 21, 2013 Author Posted January 21, 2013 (edited) Body work all into primer: Wheel centers painted with Future/Clear green mixture: Engine cleanup begins: Working on this one as well as my 1/9 Top Fuel Shovelhead Hillclimber. http://www.swannysmodels.com/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1332966289 Edited January 26, 2013 by krow113
krow113 Posted January 22, 2013 Author Posted January 22, 2013 White metal parts of this kit are soft , smoothing out and polishing was quite a chore:
wkennerley Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Well there sure is a lot of work involved in getting this looking good, well done Wayne
krow113 Posted January 26, 2013 Author Posted January 26, 2013 Ta mate. I have been getting the cleanup done on the engine and wheels , I also re& re'd the p/e getting it ready for mounting. Here is the bodywork into Polly scale Stainless Steel for the base coat.
krow113 Posted January 29, 2013 Author Posted January 29, 2013 (edited) Green day. And cool p/e rotors and a weird chain with a belt pulley combo. Mettalic green next , to simulate scale metalflake. Along with prolly 15 coats of Future to begin the smoothing. Did get the green metallic on , too fine to represent metalflake however: Some dark translucent green will finish this off nicely. Pearlescent finishes never photograph well , this does not show the iridescence of the finish. Edited January 29, 2013 by krow113
krow113 Posted January 31, 2013 Author Posted January 31, 2013 Just a coupla o/a shots today , chaps. I'm pounding away at this and the hillclimber a little each day:
Fazer Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 Great work Steve, I have one of these myself underway! I polished all the white metal parts with the side of a needle & metal polish to finish. following with interest, Mark
krow113 Posted February 1, 2013 Author Posted February 1, 2013 Thanks Mark ,I'd like to see pix of your rendition of this rarely built kit.
krow113 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Piling on a Future/Pearl mix results in a smooth glossy finish , manipulation of the parts while drying allows a thick coat to flow out nicely: Translucent Dark Green still to go! Edited February 3, 2013 by krow113
Fazer Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Hi Steve, Nice glossy coats with Klear! Dont you get any shrink back with it as I have not had great success with klear as a gloss finish? here is a pic of my Bike as it is at the moment as it is a back burner project & will be worked on when I can. The tail light is drilled out & the head lamps I am looking to use LED's grouped together. The spiral wound wire at the front is the connection for the exhausts. The wheels were spun in a model lathe & polished with fine wire wool & the front forks are s/s tube. What we have here is a total lack of respect for the law! Look forward to your updates. Mark Edited February 3, 2013 by Fazer
krow113 Posted February 3, 2013 Author Posted February 3, 2013 (edited) Mark =Cool! I have a different method for the Future, I pile it on and rotate the part , adding more , watching for the flash-off which , in proper temperature , takes 6-8 minutes , then adding more until there is a pool of material flowing around the part. There is a certain amount of shrinkage , like saran wrap , its hard to explain . Pile it on , watch for the 'blush' and rotate the part for even coverage, I call it a 'dynamic drying' technique. For these metalflake jobs , like real life, you need lots of clear coats to smooth things out. Here is a 1/9 orange metalflake Triumph: More Orange pix: http://cs.scaleautomag.com/sca/modeling_subjects/f/36/t/103740.aspx Thanks for the interest , I will advise on some of the kit troubles as I go , as it actually is kind of a 'grenade'. I see you have already drilled the rear oil tank section of the frame for the backbone. There is a trough to lay this in , even then the panhead wont fit , I had to thin the underside of the backbone, and under the panhead , to get my engine in. Edited February 3, 2013 by krow113
Natter Posted February 3, 2013 Posted February 3, 2013 This is a stunning build. That gloss finish is so deep I can't believe you achieved it with klear.
krow113 Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Thanks Natter. Future is cool stuff , one can pile it on almost endlessly to get the thick clear look. Now we see the true look and color of the attempted paint job emerging: 4 of at least a dozen coats to go. Oh yeah then some more Future! Greener and greener. Almost time for the Future. Final color coats were half/half green/Future mix. I will do the final clear coats after this sets. Edited February 6, 2013 by krow113
krow113 Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Up late last night , here are some o/a shots at this point. I'll wack on some Future to finish the paint work ,then I can move towards final assy. Edited February 6, 2013 by krow113
Fazer Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 Top dollar work Steve, I must crack on with mine Mark
krow113 Posted February 6, 2013 Author Posted February 6, 2013 (edited) Mark -I'm gonna pound this out ,I think you may want to watch as I work through it , just to see the issues I post. I'm real happy right now as I just de-molded some parts I cast for the hillclimber .They are mint! Lots of thought and work into the set up for casting production has paid off! Here are the parts cast for the Revell 1/8 series of Harley kits. One front two rear drive sprockets stock and competition: Carb , magneto , intake manifold: Primary drive belt pully's: These are representations of HD competition parts available in the early 1970's. These are also pure 'test shots' so be nice you guy's! Edited February 6, 2013 by krow113
