44-14722 'Temptation' 357th FG, 362nd FS

Leiston Airfield November 1944

Pilot Lt. Matthew S Martin, 'Waddy'

414722 'Temptation was the mount of Lt. Matthew S Martin 'Waddy' of Kentucky. Sadly Lt Marting was to see out the end of the war from behind the wire of Stalag Luft 1 after he was shot down on 5th March 1944.

Messerschmitt Me-262 A-1a/U5

JV44

München-Riem Airfield April 1945

Pilot Major Heinz Bär

This experimental weapons prototype with six 30 mm MK108 cannon was flight tested in March 1945. It was then transferred to JV44, and flown by Major Heinz Bär to München-Riem on 23 April from Lechfeld. It was flown in combat by Bär from München-Riem, from where he apparently shot down two P-47s on 27 April, and one P-47 at Bad Abling on 29 April. This is the only known prototype.

Arado Ar-234B-2N Nachtigall

Kommando Bisping Commander’s Aircraft 140145

Hauptmann Josef Bisping

Oranienburg, Germany January-February 1945

140145 is one of only two know Ar234B-2N night fighters to be built and served as part of an experimental test unit. No know record has been found to show there were any successful kills.

This aircraft was flown by Hauptmann Josef Bisping which featured the FuG-218 “Neptun” VHF band radar and carried a pair of forward firing Mg 151/20 cannons in a ventral gun pod. The radar was operated by a second crewman sitting in the cramped compartment behind the main wing.
