mobydog
Can one of you venerable lot please tell me when aircraft would have received their livery? To clarify; Boulton Paul built fifties RAF trainer, the Balliol. Once complete they would then have been delivered to their various bases such as RAF Cottesmore etc. Would they have left the factory fully RAF liveried? Or would they be complete planes but then liveried on receipt at base? For the painting I am doing of two finished Balliols undergoing flying trials over Pendeford (Wolverhampton) Airfield I need to know how to depict their markings. Many thanks Andy
Selwyn
They would have left the factory in the specified period training scheme (silver/yellow bands?) with all maintenance stencils, and the aircraft serial (e.g. XV123) painted on the fuselage and under wing. All unit markings/individual Letter markings would be applied at the RAF/or RN unit on arrival. Selwyn
mobydog
Thanks Selwyn. Would they have had roundels?
mobydog
Anyone please? Taking on board what Selwyn said above, would they have had roundels on also? I've got to get this picture done.
Wez
Yes they would have been delivered with all national markings (that includes the roundels), serial numbers and maintenance stencils in the colour scheme specified by the customer (in this case the silver scheme with yellow trainer bands). Unit markings are just that, the prerogative of the user unit which may feature a Squadron badge/unit crest and code letters. These would have been painted at the recipient unit, often (but not always) as part of the acceptance checks although dependent upon how desperately the aircraft was required it would probably have to wait until its next scheduled maintenance. Is that what you needed to hear? Wez Edited January 10, 2013 by Wez
