US Early Jets - dome thing under canopy?

Recommended Posts

The F-84E/G has one, F-86A/E/F has one, I think... ...the F-89 has one too, under the canopy, it looks like a small metallic looking dome under (I'm guessing), a perspex cover.

What is it? ADF Loop antenna or part of the canopy ejection mechanism?

What colour should it be?

Thanks

Wez, it's most likely the DF loop The B.57A's have one there.

John

Thanks John, any idea of the colour? I can't decide whether it's a dull gold, bronze or orangey colour myself.

Glass fibre would make sense for a DF Loop, it would have to have dielectric properties, just seems a bit bizarre that they did that but then again they did a lot of odd things in avionic design during that period so I shouldn't be too surprised.

The problem is that all of the colour photo's I've seen have been taken with a flash which has reflected off of the perspex cover and distorted the colour.

A brownish "natural" fibre glass covers a multitude of sins and actually covers most of the colour range of what I've described.

Is it a Van de Graaf generator?! ;)

Nothing quite as exciting or hair raising as that!

R2d2!!!

Imagine his smaller, browner brother, without all the buzzers and bells.

Or a flashing light for use when chasing baddies?

Now that would be cool but possibly a little distracting (especially at night). You've given me an idea for a WHIF though! Thanks!!

Have a look here:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-F-86-Sabre-AS-313B-ARN-6-ADF-Loop-Antenna-/281017315744?item=281017315744&pt=Motors_Aviation_Parts_Gear&cmd=ViewItem&vxp=mtr&hash=item416deff1a0&nma=true&si=7iqRw2s7%2FIlwLSNpZRgz2i5i7Xk%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Unless you actually make the dome from hollow clear plastic (and paint it pale orange inside) I would try painting the part pale tan and then cover it in clear orange to simulate the perspex.

Cheers

Jeffrey,

Excellent thanks, the e-Bay link was particularly helpful, that's the first time I've seen one of them un-installed. Most useful.

Fujimi provide this as a clear part on their sabres and ask you to paint it clear orange.

Julien

That's where I'd seen the reference to clear orange, I couldn't recall.

Thanks
