heloman1
Good morning Steve. Best bike I haven't ridden it yet, I'm, on a banning order from her miserableness. She'd rather have me with a long face in one piece than in hospital with tubes and rods etc, hanging out of me. I suppose it would have to be a Ducati 998 or a Binelli Six. I was in Bedfordview johannesburg when they had the 1098 world launch by Troy Bayliss, I got him to sign my Ducati Racers book. Bolldy magic! As Steve will attest the motorist in SA have no regard for themselves let along a cyclist or motorcyclist. Most fun, trying to restore a 125cc BSA Bantam 1952 model. First bike, Honda 50 Sport, I'll leave that one there. The little 'white' polyprop bottles on GP and SBK bikes. I've looked at this one a few times, I think semi translucent plastic rod drilled/hollwed out to a thin wall, or clear rod frosted (matt coat airbrushed) then the fluid painted on the inside. I think there was a build thread on Automotives Forum (couple of years ago!) on a Yami build where the guy got it spot on. No bike modelling today, it's on the Wessex. Col.
Best bike ever rode was an old Ducati 900 SS in the black and gold colours. Got talking to the guy who owned it when I was 17 and he said if I could start it I could take it for a spin. Growing up around my dad's Royal Enfield and BSA bikes gave me an unfair advantage but he kept his word and let me loose. Was a huge difference from the DT125 I had at the time and blew my mind. Loved Ducati V-twins ever since. Worst bike was a badly tuned LC350 a mate bought then asked me to sort out. Had a powerband like getting kicked by a horse and, unknown to me at the time, a badly rebuilt gearbox. The latter I discovered on a fast right-hander when it locked up and high-sided me through a hedge. A properly sorted Elsie is a thing of beauty - a bad one is a death trap! As for the reservoir bottles; I've painted a fluid level on them with light brown then overcoated with white. Carefull brush-painting seemed to give a nice effect from what I can recall on my older models.

No 1 best road - trip round the isle of man No 2 best road, even though its, shall we say, exciting(sarcasm) riding a bike in South Africa, you need to do, at least once in your life, the trip from Jo'burg to Cape Town on the N2... 1260 odd km's, actually is a bloody nice ride. Black Knight
Well, I'll throw my lot in with youse. My first bike was a Suzuki B120P - commonly refered to as a Blooper. Most of the rest are boing. Ok then, they were all boring - but fit for purpose. 'Q' bikes - used for my work. One of the best I liked was a good tuned and customized Suzuki GT380. Now 'in between' bikes. Best roads? All in Norn I'rn. Only three fixed speed cameras and four mobile ones, makes lots of the roads very 'interesting'. D1fuN0
Chaps... Never thought Id be one of those sad buggers that posts about a colour query, but... The NR 750, the engine calls for a colour mix of Semi Gloss Black and Metallic Grey as a 1:1 mix, for various bits and bobs. So, my question, is that not Metallic Black? Mixing the two together, basically gives a sort of very dark Metallicy colour. From what I can glean from photos's the bits and pieces, look more to me as if they are a sort of very dark grey almost powder coat finish. I dont want to do the Metallic Black idea, its a bit too satiny, and SGB just not the right colour. see pic below, any ideas, its the two side covers and you can see the diff between the SGB of the engine and the covers. comments / help appareciated Steve

Black Knight
Its not a 'wrinkle' finish. Imagine a rough grit blasted surface, with a sprayed very dark grey paint. It has a fine surface roughness look to it, with some texture. I think its actually an anodised finish on the casting. Its purposely finished this way as a texture/look to compliment the high gloss of the other painted and polished parts. If I were painting this I would mix semigloss black with gummetal. As I use Humbrol paints that would be no. 85 & 53. In a mix of 3 black to 1 gunmetal. Just some thoughts.
krow113
So its reflecting light the way it does owing to texture rather than color. Good clue there. Any way I wanna join the M/C group build. My first road bike was a Honda Black Bomber which I had chopped with a bolt on hardtail. Next came a Norton 750 Combat Commando with Mk II Amals. Then a Matchless P 11. Then the Harleys 6 of to date, mostly hand built choppers. I still make a part of my living in the m\c industry. Best roads: The ones heading out of town. My favorite ride: My current ride: I have a cool little build I started that fits the bill for the gb lemme know if I 'm in. I was using Tamiya SGB and Metallic Grey which didnt work, SGB and Humbrol Gun Metal did. The Tamiya didnt have the texture that the Humbrol did. I was messing about with paint last night and thats also what I tried, but i just used enough SGB to blacken the Gun Metal, looks like it came out a treat. Thanks for that man, and all the other chaps for there advice. Steve
heloman1
Hi Steve, Try adding some matting agent, or airbrushing from a distance to get a dry gritty finish then waft with some clear matt coat to seal it if required. Colin
krow113
Or... Depending on temp , humidity , coat thickness and number of coats , this can be used to render a number of different textures. Edited January 18, 2013 by krow113
D1fuN0
Hi Guys Toying with an idea. Schlepped my modelling stuff up here with me, and last night I was looking through my spares box for some pegs to use on a CB 400 im putting together as a cafe racer, (dont laugh, there really was one). It struck me that the amount of stuff in that box i could probably make my own bike... There are at least three bikes in there that suffered from deceleration trauma, and bits and bobs from a few more, so I think, to celebrate the grand running of the Group Build, as an aside project, i might just 'have a go' and build my own bike... Let me do some thinking about this, see what comes of it... Anyone up for the chalenge as well? *Edit* I understand this may not fall within the edict of the Group Build, So shall we say that I shall run this just as a like show and tell? D1fuN0
Bonkers mate!! No chance....if Mrs Riggers sees the stash I have already, she'll flip!! Boxes all over the place!! ATB.......... Hahaaaaaa Oh Riggers, one must have three stashes... The stash - visible, and on display, not too large, not too small, just big enough to impress The deep stash - a suitable place for more models, that is not on display, suitable for those more expensive kits, etc that only you need know about. The dark side stash - located at the end of your own personal wormhole, can be the size of a box, or a 30ft container.. This is youre own personal weh hey space, that only you know about and can enjoy at your leisure... basically what she doesnt know, wont hurt her Should SWMBO discover the second one, remind her about the shoes/handbag/clothes arguement. Should she discover the darkside stash , you are no longer a man, you should give up now and start wearing a dress, (or go live in France...)
