1/48th Italeri - Hawker Hurricane Mk. I

Recommended Posts

Thats coming along nicely :goodjob: Dont be tempted to leave the escape hatch off on the starboard side.

These were only removed for maintance and were not a crew entry point like the Spitfire.

Thanks for the reminder, I was planning on fixing it in place open until I did some more reading and reminded myself they weren't hinged

Although I am tempted to leave off placed on the wing as if for maintenance.....

Stunning, love the scheme :)

Thanks Woody, I plan to have a go at doing a bit of paint chipping later, bit nervous to be honest though........ I might practice on something first, see how it turns out. Then oil stains and exhaust streaks and it will be onto the home straight.

Look forwards to seeing this. Using a silver artist pencil is good for doing the chips, also quite easy to rub off if you don't like it. Love the weathering and tonal effects you've achieved both inside and outside the aircraft.

  • 4 weeks later...

Well, I have been distracted by other projects at the moment. Managed to slice my thumb open at work last week as well, and I've got my brown belt grading next weekend, I'm sure I won't be able to get much modelling done afterwards....

Anyway, I've got the undercarriage on!

As provoked by Iain

Erewash-20130220-00344_zps1257ede5.jpg

The soot staining from the guns is far too heavy and uneven, my airbrush was really playing up, I'd washed it off and re-done it about a dozen times before I gave up and left it. My wife reckons it looks ok but I think she is just being kind.....

I'll get the crystal parts on next.

Hey matt

Yeah maybe the soot stains are a little heavy / uneven but I wouldn't beat myself up about it...you are building it up to be a real good looking airplane...what with you, Sean and Jazzy Jase all completing exemplary builds I have a lot to aspire to...no pressure there then!

Oh and Glad to see you made off your sick bed.... ;-)

Cheers mate and keep up the good work.

Yours aye

Iain

Hi

I had to come and look. Nice Job! Slap on the wrists for sitting in silence while Iain and I slaved away. We can now consider you as part of the Build off....

I am still very much under tje weather and I am stopping around still doing the cockpit debate in my head....

It's nice to see the kit being done in one of the non-standard camo patterns

I would like to know what technique you used for the exhausts. PM me if you dont want to publish on the forum

If I can be of any help let me know

Keep up the good work.

Yours Aye

Thanks Sean lol, you guys have been a lot more daring though, with your fancy aftermarket resin parts lol.

I went back to work today, half of me wishes I hadn't.......

Still, I put the clear parts on last night, some learning points.

1. You will lose the dorsal navigation light, it is tiny. I remember thinking as I had almost got it to it's position on the fuselage "crikey, I thought I'd have dropped it before now....", when PING! it shot off never to be seen again. PVA time.

2. the wing mounted landing lights look great once some paint is added and fixed in place, although one of the covers was a bit warped.

3. I decided to get a masking set for the canopy as the frame isn't massively raised from the glazing, I thought it would make it hard to mask by hand.

4, the light on the underside needs a bit of trimming to fit properly, particularly once the paint and a couple of coats of varnish is added, either that or put it in place first then mask it.

Regarding the exhausts, I think "technique" is to strong a word........

I used a very dark brown as a base coat, then stippled a mid-brown over that, then stippled orange, then stippled mid brown again. Then dry-brushed GW boltgun metal over the raised points (the other paints were GW too, but I can't remember the new names), I am quite intuitive when I do things I am used to, so often can't remember the details.

I've masked the canopy since getting home from work, I might stick a bit of paint on later.

Still not sure what your dilemma is regarding the cockpit, PM me if it would help.

cheers fellah

So, I survived my brown belt grading yesterday with all my finger and thumbs intact :-) I was able today to get a bit more done to the Hurri.

Friday nights photos first....

Starboard landing and nav light. You can see the ill fitting cover on the landing light, grr

Erewash-20130224-00353_zpsebd0eba1.jpg

port side, all fits like a glove

Erewash-20130224-00355_zpsffa40849.jpg

Then onto tonights work.....

Painted the PVA dorsal nav light

Erewash-20130224-00356_zps776c3aa8.jpg

windscreen on, wish I'd attached it before painting and masked it to be honest, fit doesn't look great :-(

Erewash-20130224-00361_zps4be655a8.jpg

And the finally, the canopy, ready to be finished, I might airbrush it, as i wasn't to happy wish the finish I got brush-painting the windscreen

Erewash-20130224-00362_zps2a733655.jpg

Looks like I'll get this finished before the end of Feb, I'll be happy with one completed build every two months to be fair.

Ciao

Nice work mate, I like what you've done.

Mines coming along very slowly but I'm determined to get there and if its half as goos as yours I'll be a very happy bunny.

Yours aye

Iain

Thanks for the kind words Iain, I finished painting the canopy and fixed it in place last night. I will fix the aerial in place tomorrow evening and take the final pics at the weekend.

I went to get some CA accelerator from Model Zone at lunchtime today, but they were out of stock!!! I'll borrow some from somebody at work tomorrow :-)

I like it a lot, only built the Hase one but I am thinking of getting one of these now

Thanks Skids, It's been a lot of fun, I certainly wouldn't moan if my wife bought me another one.

Now that's a rather interesting kit and well-detailed. Well done Italeri and job well done to you Matt.

Cheers

Good modelling.

But, if you want to make an accurate model, the Italeri kit has a load of irritating errors, which should not have made! The comedy one is the underwing sheel ejector ports...wrong on model, shown correctly on the painting guide!

considering there is a photo booklet in the kit I assume that was put together later....

I'm a Hurricane anorak, so what bugs me a lot is probably not a big deal for others.

But, for those so inclined, there is a list of these here....

http://www.britmodeller.net/forums/index.php?/topic/234912548-my-first-build-log/page-6#entry1104593

The whole thread is worth reading as it's full of observations, posted photos and comments on Hurricane detailing which hopefully be of use on any Hurricane build.

similar thing here

Hope of use to folks contemplating this kit

Thanks Troy, it's my first 1/48th, and it's been a blast. I have worried more about honing my skills rather going for a total 100% accurate build. I wish I'd seen those links earlier though ...... ;-)

I want to get to the same level of skill as my figure painting, I'm not brilliant by a mile but I don't have to think to get results I'm happy with. I'm not there yet with aircraft modelling.

I'm sticking the aerial on as I type (not literally), so finished pics up tomorrow.

Hi Matt

The work you have done is excellent, especially considering MY kit is still in the box, getting pulled out to hmm and haa over....

[i'm not set up to butcher plastic but I will be soon, no model space until I finish the DIY, model space last...]

The site can be a bit of a maze, it took me 10 mins to find the post where I'd listed the glitches and I knew what i as looking for!!

if you has seen the links you could easily have fallen into the paralysed by research trap... I've been a Huricane buff since age 6 or 7, scarily that's 40 years so i should know a bit, to be honest I have learnt A LOT since since my rekindled interest in modelling, like the use of alumnium for much of the inside and the two types of De Havilland propeller fitted, and the wing panel arrangements on the MkIV etc etc

Bear in mind you can always ask for information on a kit and it's pitfalls in the relevant section, if nothing esle folks can point you in the direction of previous postings

Also, the site search certainly was not great,[it might have got better] and I get better results using google, add 'britmodller' ito your search term.

I was hesitant to add the links, but as other folks were interested in the kit I hoped it would be of use if they wishes to make some tweaks. There would have been a lot more wailing and gnashing of teeth if this was a Spitfire!

I'm glad you found them of interest.

Italeri seem to be a bit schizophrenic with their models, some really good parts combined with sloppy research.. plus the RRP is a bit steep!

keep up the great work

cheers

Looking great. I used selotape to do the landing lights on the Ital Sunderland as they didn't fit either, worked really well if it's any help :)

Thank Woody, I can't visualise what you mean though. Do you cut the Selotape to shape and then apply it directly?

It is now finished, final shots are here - http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234935772-148th-italeri-hawker-hurricane-malta-defender-scheme/
