Radpoe Spitfire
Whilst rummaging through my loft (at Last!!!!!) I came across an interesting little book about HMS Howe- inside the front cover was a photo & ink drawn plots with dates of where she had sailed. The book came from a clear out of my late Father-in-law's home- he was ex army, but it may have been a relative of his who served aboard the ship. Where does this fit in with modelling? I'm now thinking of building a model of HMS Howe, but is there a kit, or would it take much to covert a model of KGV? And what info is there out in model land please? pyro-manic
Depending on what period you're looking at, the AAA fit etc. will change quite a lot, so you'll need plenty of references.
therollercoaster
The Howe as launched was equipped with the catapult and hangars for Walrus spotter planes, depending on the period you're looking at you want either Tamiya 1/350th KGV or P-o-W kits. WEMs big etched set for the KGV class contains some etch parts specific to Howe, the main differences are the gun directors and the auxiliary bridge on the aft funnel but the AA fit of these ships was updated a number of times and during her refit the catapult was removed and the boat-deck extended as on the KGV kit. There is a long thread over on the Ship Model Forum that might help http://www.shipmodel...php?f=47&t=4715 Here are a couple of pics that might be useful. HTH. AMD
Radpoe do you have picture of what was in with it? Would be fascinating to see.
dfqweofekwpeweiop4
I was planning on doing Duke of York, Howe and Anson, using the Tamiya 1/700 kits as a starting point. On doing a wee bit of research but I found out that the HACs directors were different to that of KGV and Prince of Wales. I also found out that Howe and Anson's bridge wings/platforms were different to the first two ships. I still don't know the exact differences but as a result I'm no longer planning on doing Howe or Anson. I am however going to do Duke of York, using Prince of Wales as a starting point and the funnel platform is from the WEM KGV etch set. A guy in the states called Steve Larsen made a few sets of Mk V HACs for me, so I can do DOY. Steve Larsen did cast parts for the 1/350 Tamiya KGV and POW kits with the platforms for Howe and Anson, so i would recommend trying to contact him and seeing if he still does the parts. I don't have any contact details for him now but google him, failing that, trying posting on Modelwarships and see if someone can point you in the right direction for him. thanks Mike
Radpoe Spitfire
Radpoe do you have picture of what was in with it? Would be fascinating to see. Yes Andrew, I do. The photo I have is a copy of one that actually appears in the book, but it looks like it may have one that was available to crew members. I'll try to get it scanned asap- given I've got a new PC with Windows 8, I'm still trying to work around the basics of using it.
rossm
Interesting photos of Howe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HMS_Howe_%2832%29_passing_Suez_Canal_1944.jpg and http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/205189125 I want to build my Tamiya 1/700 KGV in this configuration and scheme as it was an unwitting participant (the target) in the only guided weapons attack carried out against the UK.
