PHREAK
I'm just saying that the chances of restoring anything that comes out of a muddy crate is highly unlikely. Remind me, what did they find in a muddy crate?

So humour me........................... what did they find in the crate that was full of water and was being pumped out ???? muddy water at a guess. empty crate? seems a strange thing to bury. My post was in response to the previous post, and is also a comment suggesting I find it strange that an empty crate be buried, and so wonder what was in it if its not a Spitfire. I'm just saying that the chances of restoring anything that comes out of a muddy crate is highly unlikely. Remind me, what did they find in a muddy crate? I dont think either of us were questioning yourself or your friend, and I think you misunderstood our posts. Just curious to know what was in it now, seeing as they made the announcement of finding the crate in the first place.

theclay
the way i see it is, just becuase they re not at this specific place, does not mean that they are not in Burma. even if there is water in a crate, and there is a spitfire, we still have a spitfire. Alan P
I feel sorry for the 91-year-old bloke who's along for the "historical witness" bit. He's ended up just looking like a crazy old man. Poor fella.
Miggers
Posted an hour ago on Key(Flypast)forums, not by Mark12 though: For what its worth, this from the Burma Spitfires Facebook page just recently:"Update from David: Burmese wouldn't let them dig where the eyewitness statements said the aircraft were located so the whole thing was futile. He still believes and is fighting on..."So, we will wait to hear from the archaeos and geo-phys if, indeed, they were not allowed to dig in the right place. If correct, that statement seems a bit odd. It begs the question; why dig the big hole they did, anyway? And what about the geophys surveys? Is it being suggested that they couldn't dig there either? And were the witness location and the geophys location both in different places? My thoughts on that statement: It smells like someone somewhere in a Government back office has actuallyput 2+2 together and made 4 to think "These foreigners are onto something here".If(agreed BIG IF)they are buried there, what a coup to pull off after the foreigners have gone home to actually find the things and be able to sell them all yourself instead of letting the foreigners claim some of the spoils and all the glory??I'm not in the "They'll be turn-key aircraft" camp nor in the "there'll be nowt at all" camp,it'll be nice if something turns up(I won't be surprised if there isn't anything),but I think (if they've not been allowed to dig in the correct place)it won't be Mr Cundell and crew that turn that "something" up.As Mark12 said to me,"Keep an open mind.I think they just might find something Spitfire, but I'm not sure what"

theflyingwelshman
This is a real shame in my opinion, whether the aircraft/ parts would have been restorable or not is not really of concern to me ( nice if they were though). Its a little bit of history that would have otherwise gone unoticed and forgotten, if they would have recovered a few bits, i would still go to a museum to see them. It does seem a little strange to me that there were very few press releases or news on the progress when they were digging. Just my thoughts. Max Headroom
The digging was only commencing this month. I don't think it's a case of preventing the foreigners getting the glory. Burma/Myanmar is opening up to the outside world so they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they were playing silly beggars. It does though seem odd though that they are not allowing a dig where the geophysics suggests there is 'something'. Maybe they're waiting for Tony Robinson and Time Team to turn up.
