Muzz
Currently building a Tornado GR4 in the current all over medium sea grey (BS381C/637) scheme, I've used Mr Hobby's MSG but it appears a bit dark to my eye, can anyone suggest another good match? I have a stock of Xtracrylix MSG but I'm always a bit wary of using it as I've had a few bad experiences with it wrinkling under a second coat or after varnish. Muzz
Tamiya XF-83? I was under the impression this was a WW2 colour and not the modern MSG, I have some so will see what it's like. Thanks Muzz
gmsphoto
I used xtracrylic used on my gr4 and just thinned It with cold water. Used halfords grey primer and one coat was fine left it for a easy then used future. Yeah the tamiya is ww2 colour afaik. cardiff guy
was looking at the lynx at telford last week there is a massive difference between msg that has weathered and fresh msg as the touch ups on the airframe looked to bet a different colour altogether. regards Glenn.... And talking to the crew (who DO do some of the maintenance) the 'touch ups' are applied by sponge. The comment was, and i quote: "Not too bothered about which colour (grey) is used, because it's to preserve the airframe. The CORRECT colour will be applied at the next major service, by air gun, BUT it's ALL MSG!" I counted 5 different shades of grey on the airframe, and this airframe was NOT a 'flight' aircraft, but used for training.
Jennings Heilig
I was photographing on the ramp at NAS Oceana some years ago. The maintenance officer who was escorting the photo tour happened to be a modeler. We were photographing some VC-12 TA-4Js, and we were discussing color obsession among modelers. He said that earlier that year he had taken one of their aircraft to a big air show. He noticed a couple of IPMS types standing next to the TA-4 with their FS595 color fan decks trying to match what color had been used for the touch-up paint. The officer said he took great pleasure in walking up behind them and telling them that the touch-up paint was spray can automotive primer from Sears
AirfixAndy
MSG is well known for its weathering qualities......take a look at photos of Victors and Vulcans and you will see what I mean. As for Tornado's......the late service F3s where painted all over MSG but had panels of all different shades of MSG as well as Cammoflage Grey . The GR4 s are the same now with a patchwork of panels in differing shades. Andy
AnonymousAA72
Xtracrylic's MSG is a bit too dark. I've used Humbrol's acrylic MSG in the past and found it t o be quite a good and realistic shade - though hardly discernable from their Camo/Barley Grey! It is very thick though and needs a lot of thinning down - and quite a few thin coats.
Grizzly
Have used Mr Color it is a lighter shade more in keeping with Royal Navy MSG

Muzz
Cheers for all the responses folks, I've recently finished an F3 in the patchwork MSG/Camo Grey finish and the MSG looks fine on that. For some reason the GR4 scheme always appears lighter in the photo's, in my opinion any way. I'll have to have a play about, will probably end up making the Mr Hobby MSG a bit lighter.
