RAN late 1930's Diorama

Recommended Posts

Bugger me I've finished them, Vampire is attached to the board and just needs gangways and more crew and tieing up to the dock, then I can attach Vendetta and figure out how I'm going to get gangways between the two. The rigging has been driving me nuts and just keeps losing tention in the lines no matter how many times I wave a hot knife near them and stretch them back out so there is a couple of loose lines. I need to learn to use less glue when attaching them as well, a couple of spots are just balls of glue :( . But they are finished WOOHOO I'm not doing them again. Vampire has a couple of crew, I've tried to fatten them up a bit with drops of pva glue before I painted them instead of using the Eduard prepainted sets. Painting is just sprayed all blue then a touch flesh for a face and white for hats.

Afternoon all. Just a bit more progress and just about finished around the destroyers. I still have to add more crew to Vendetta and more dockyard workers

plus some other bits and pieces, but its close.

The last photo shows the mess I made of the rigging with glue on the destroyers, but other than that I'm happy with it so far.

Hopefully some more soon

Cheers Callum

Hi Callum mate.

Well that cruiser looks the bees knees and will make a fine addition to your very good Diorama of a sight that will never be repeated.

Great work there and following this as one of the nine. :coolio::bye: .

Callum, this is just a stunning effort, I'm so impressed & so enjoying following it. After seeing what you've done with the Vs & Sydney, I am soooo looking forward to seeing what you can do with Canberra (slight pause to confess weakness for the Counties.;) )

Thanks heaps for your comments Steve, I'm looking forward to seeing Canberra, although I have to admit I'm pretty vague on whats actually going on with parts of her, the big problem is her mast dimensions, I just wouldn't have a clue what they are, although I reckon I could make a fair guestimate of them myself, it would be great if someone would know what the mast measurements are and wouldn't mind sharing the info with me:) any help would be much appreciated. But for now heres a little teaser of things to come.

UFp5hQV.jpg

its only the top of the bridge thats been glued where the windows are and I got a bit carried away sanding that bottom deck, its going to be interesting attaching that to the ship but I'll work that one out later .

thanks for looking and the comments and hopefully there will be more soon

Cheers Callum

Hi Callum mate.

I assume you have plans for the Canbella.

As for the masts I would say they were standard, so the ships(cruisers) you have already built should give you a good heads up.

Hope this helps mate. :pipe:

Steve thats a perfect picture, I hadn't seen that one before, there is some similar ones in a link on the last page. The instructions also have a side and top plan on them that are not even a centimeter smaller than the model itself, I just thought today to check that. So between all these I reckon I'll muddle through :) . But for now Sydney's aft mast has been made and just needs some paint and the searchlight platform it goes thru has been finished. So its just the rigging left that could cause me trouble now, other than that its the home stretch

Thanks once again for the comments and imput Gents

Cheers Callum

Callum, I never fully appreciated how small all your ships were till I saw your finger. Awesome mate, just awesome! Jockster

Oh my word Callum, that really is just a bit flaming super. Knowing Sydney's fate & the way you've captured her at an earlier & more innocent time, it really does reek of atmosphere & feeling, & there is no better aim for a diorama than that imho.

Thank you Gents, I'm glad you like Sydney and the dio so far. I've always been captivated by the Sydney story, so having a model of her finished is a pretty good thing I reckon. I am starting to think that I have used a too light a shade of grey on the warships but its probably a bit late to do anything about that now.

So up next...........

Turning that lot into Hmas Canberra :) . The eagle eyed amongst you may be curious why only 7 8inch brass barrels. I was curious myself when I pulled them out for the photo, then I realized I'd had a moment..........

Can you see the 8th barrel (well half of it anyway) I thought it was an off cut from one of Sydneys masts and would make a great bit of detail on the catapult :( . Anyway I'm looking forward to finishing work tommorrow and having a couple of days to get things started, so hopefully more soon

thanks once again for looking and the encouragement

Cheers Callum

Morning all, Just a bit of an update and a chance to show some better pics of Sydney. I've put Canberra aside for now as I'm waiting for the WEM Town class cruiser PE as I need more cross beam deck supports for the different deck levels, but its on back order :( . I've been working on the water side of Sydney for now and have the oiler and tugs for that side finished as well adding a boat landing area at the end of the pier. I've also got the first coat of acrylic gel medium for that side down.

Canberras hull has always been bent upwards at both ends and I wasn't able to get rid of it entirely but it has also got a curving upwards of the main deck leading to the stern making it sit higher than the bow, where pictures show it should be straight and lower than the bow. I'm not really sure what to do about it, I read someone cut the deck down level then replaced the deck detail but that is a little beyond my skill set, I had the thought of making a cut from the stern to the rear turret between the 2 lines of portholes and pushing the deck down into the gap and filling it in again, but thats a pretty scary concept as well so chances are I'll leave it :) .

For now there is still plenty to be going on with but that list is getting shorter, a couple more weekends should see it all done .

So thanks for looking and hopefully more soon

Cheers Callum
