USS Essex 1/350

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, thought I`d take the opportunity, whilst it`s cold and miserable outside, to show you my 2nd maritime effort which I started soon after my attempt at the Hornet.

Trumpeters 1/350 scale USS Essex, which I tried to depict after its refit when it got camouflaged

SAM_5404.jpg

Had to slightly modify the bridge area on the island and

SAM_5409.jpg

make new radar arrays and masts which I made out of copper wire from a electrical flex and super glue and walkways around the undeside if the forward flightdeck from plastic card.

SAM_5416.jpg

bought some generic etched railings and some extra aircraft

Hope you enjoy..

Flippin heck that's gorgeous! I have Hasegawa's 700th Essex and if that's half as good as yours it's gonna be great. Very nice job with this one. Thanks for sharing

Beautiful work, but there is one problem: You have the 1945 Air Group, AG-83, with the ship in her 1944 scheme. Probably a little difficult to do, but putting her with Air Group 15 would have been more correct. I'm doing a book on AG-15 right now, and have quite a few photos of Essex, which is why I point this out. The 1944 scheme was more for anti-submarine camo, which by 1945 was not the problem, so they went back to a modified Measure 5 scheme, which was more appropriate for an aerial threat (the Kamikaze).

You definitely, however, make me want to go get hold of that kit so I can do her with AG-15 aboard, circa October 1944 (mixture of F6F-5s in GSB, F6F-3 in tri-color, Helldivers and Avengers in tri-color).

Cheers TC, I can live with it.
