Odd issue with cellulose thinners

Good morning all,

I had an odd issue with a tin of cellulose thinners over weekend and, out of interest really, I wondered if anyone knew what it was.

I usually decant some thinners into a glass jar, to make it easier to get at. I had just got to the end of one can and poured some of the new can in with the old stuff. I use plastic pipets to get some out to clean the AB. I've done this for a while now with no issues, been through 3 or 4 500ml cans of thinners.

I squirted some into my AB paint cup, after spraying Alclad Matt Varnish (the cellulose based type) and it went to jelly instantly. At first I thought it was a reaction with the varnish. I squirted some fresh thinners onto the bench and the same thing happened. I grabbed a new pipet and again same thing. I squirted some back into the jar and it went to jelly. There was also a mass of jelly at the bottome of the jar. I chucked the jar with the thinners in, and got a fresh clean jar and decanted some more thinners, all seemed ok, back to liquid. Went to clean the AB again, after using Aclad primer and jelly again! This time I tried a new can of thinners and didn't seem to get the issue! So I've binned the can under the assumption it was a bad batch.

Can anyone shed any light on this! I though cellulose thinners was good for most things without reacting. The only other thing I thought is does it not like cold? It's getting chilly out in the garage!

Thanks

Phil
