occa
Is it me or does the tail of the nighfighter version look a bot taller on the profiles indeed? Question was it actually enlarged with the S version?
Nick Millman
The nightfighter D4Y2-S or Model 12 Bo was retrofitted by the Hiro arsenal with a windscreen similar to that on the Model 11 equipped with an oblique gunsight. A belt-fed 20mm oblique cannon was installed. The flexible rear gun, bombing and carrier equipment were removed and the vertical tail was increased in height. There are various engine details that have not been resolved between versions, the differences being certain lumps and bumps on top of the cowling relating to the position of the magneto. The taller tail fin was carried on with the radial engined D4Y3. When Fujimi issued their D4Y2-S kit in 1993 it contained the sprue frame from the earlier 1984 D4Y3 kit with the taller tail so you ended up with a spare radial engine and prop. Fujimi never issued the D4Y1 but their attention to detail was such that the D4Y2-S kit included a new canopy moulding with the correct windscreen - no gunsight though!
