Col.
You ought to have fitted the upper wing panels to the roots before fitting the lower one piece panel mate. You can fettle and fit to eliminate ALL the gaps without using filler and a difficult sanding job. Did consider that option but it threw everything else out of line such as the ailerons and moved the fit issues toward the thinner outer wing panels. Since all the panel lines are going to be reworked and there's a good bit of mould damage around the wing root anyway I've plenty work to do in that area so may as well get it all done at once in one place
Col.
Got the wing on after a bit of dry-fitting and modification, plenty glue and a bit of pressure in the right places; Didn't end up being so bad as I anticipated. Once everything is blended in I'll make a start to the panel lines.
Giorgio N
One thing I totally forgot to mention to you when you started the build: the airfix kit has a wrong depiction of the ailerons: the upper wing line should be further back than the one on the lower wing, while airfix moulded the ailerons with the same chord on both sides. The solution is simply to fill in the upper line and scribe in the correct location... I know, it would have been easier to do it before gluing the wing.. sorry ! Col.
No worries Giorgio, you mentioned that in good time, only once all the filling and blending is done will I make a start to panel details

The wooksta V2.0
Looks good, Col. Looking forward to seeing the finished result. The current boxing of the Airfix Vc (I know, but keep reading!) has, in addition to the Vb wing, the Vb canopy plus the hook section on the new Vc wing. Plus the decals are rather good too. It's the same grey box but if it says 'Made in India' or 'Made in China', it'll have those bits. Nice to know that you can get a Seafire Ib out of the box! brianthemodeller
I have been planning one of these as weel - to represent an aircraft from HMS Indefatigable and was planning to use an Italeri Spitfire mk IX as the base. I am a bit coinfused, though - all of the pictures I can find of the Seafire III show it as having canons and the respective bulges on the wings. Have I missed something?? Sgt.Squarehead
I'd guess they'll be going back on after the rescribing is done.....But I'm an AFV modeller, so I'm probably wrong. I've been attempting to build a Seafire IIC from this kit.....Col. is there any chance you could scan your etch set (the etch itself, not the instructions) at 1:1 so I can copy it in plastic card? I've attempted to fashion parts based on scans of the instructions for the equivalent 1/48 set, but resizing them has been a major pain as the instructions aren't actually printed in 1/48 (and are possibly not to scale). All the best Andy S. Edited December 7, 2012 by Sgt.Squarehead

Probably easier to use the Airfix IX and graft the nose from the Vb onto it and use the spare Va oil cooler from the Airfix IIa/IIa kit. It can be done - I've a fuselage already modified but have yet to finish it.
Giorgio N
I have been planning one of these as weel - to represent an aircraft from HMS Indefatigable and was planning to use an Italeri Spitfire mk IX as the base. I am a bit coinfused, though - all of the pictures I can find of the Seafire III show it as having canons and the respective bulges on the wings. Have I missed something?? I've done exactly this a few years ago, mainly as the Italeri Spitfire IX is too short in the nose anyway... Using the airfix IX instead is not a bad idea as this has several parts more correct than the Italeri kit (radiator, propeller, location of case ejection windows, exhausts), although the Italeri kit is much more detailed. When I built mine, I simply shortened the cowling and then built the right shape over the exhausts with filler. However a lot of parts had to come from the spares box: propeller (KP), exhausts (resin), radiator (matchbox), oil radiator (resin)... My attempt can be seen here (no in progress shots unfortunately) http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=234910181 The Seafire III has the same bulges of the definitive Spitfire C wing, guess in the wip they are missing as they'll be added later
j_jza80
I love this kit, it's the first fixed wing I remember building (and second kit overall, only second to a Westland Lynx)

Col.
Thank you for all the comments and interest. Not got much done to her since unfortunately. Next task will be getting everything blended in then scribing. After that I can add all the lumps and bumps. The cannon bulges are coming from the same KP kit that donated its prop to the Seafire IV project. Andy S, no etch harmed in the making of this one yet I'm afraid, all scratched up with plasticard. Hamden
Just found this thread, I am gob smacked by your attention to detail. I shall follow this with interest. Roger
Col.
Thank you Roger. The filling & smoothing is done so the scraping and scribing started last night. Think this will take a while...
Sgt.Squarehead
For some reason I'd got it into my head that you were working from the Airwaves set......Magnicicent modelling regardless, your cockpit detailing is absolutely first rate! Col.
Excuse the lack of my presence on the forum gang but a lack of home computer has made participation impossible. Done a bit more to this one at least. Added the fuselage strengthening plates, a windscreen robbed from the KP kit as well as its cannon bulges to the wings then the Airfix carb intake, oil cooler, radiator, tail wheel & u/c legs all slightly modified or detailled to suit then made a start to the flaps. Of course having told you that I now discover I don't know how to add photos via photobucket on this so-called smart phone. Bah.

Col.
Thank you gents. It feels great to be working on it again & making progress. Next task is getting the flaps detailed but think that will take a couple evenings work before I have anything worth showing.

Max Headroom
Nice work so far and look forward to further progress. Putting my head over the parapet so to speak, as the III is the equivalent of the Vc (isn't it?) should the undercarriage be raked forward slightly or didn't the Seafires do this? Col.
Yes Trevor you are spot on there; Got the upper surfaces painted and ready for decals now; Rather than fire up the airbrush I went back to a hairy stick with this one. A couple tins of old Humbrol paint for the Sky & Extra Dark Sea Grey went down lovely over a couple of coats so if all goes well the Aeromaster decals kindly supplied by a fellow BMer will get started to this evening.
