History

At the time of beginning of Barbarossa operation the most part of Wehrmacht’s transport vehicles was from lorry had been produced as per “Program of expedited production of lorries” (Schnell Programme). They had sufficient possibility for seat of war in the Western Europe with its extensive motor roads network. But in the inclement climate of Russia and absence of roads with hard surface thousands vehicles stuck in mud and snow and were abandoned during the first war winter. Even all-wheel drive Mercedes-Benz L4500A was not able to carry loads at the Russian lack of good roads. That is why in 1943 half-track off-road vehicle Mercedes-Benz L4500R “Maultier” was created on the base of L4500A. During that caterpillar mover from the light tank Pz.Kpfw. II was mounted instead of rear axle. Dead weight of vehicle was increased, load carrying capacity was decreased up to 4.5 tones, maximal speed was reduced up to 36 km/h, and fuel consumption was up to 200 litres per 100 km. But now “Maultier” was able to drive on any mud. L4500R was producing till 1948 and 1486 such vehicles had been manufactured.

Designed for the Zvezda L 4500R ET models have released this two sheet etched brass. The kit itself is already very nicely detailed out of the box, but this set adds that extra level of finesse to some of the slightly more clunky areas. In addition to the etch sheets there is also a small acetate sheet for the instrument binnacle and a resin shrouded headlamp. The etch is nicely produced with some fine surface detail and mesh. Some parts of the kits detail has to be removed before adding the etch, most notably in the cabin, where the instruments are replaced with the acetate instruments on which the etched parts are added along with a couple of switches. Additionally the brake, clutch and accelerator pedals are replaced with brass parts. There are new door cards, complete with door handles and window winders. The kits entrance steps are also completely replaced. The engine gets a new cooling fan and oil cooler, made up of five parts of brass added to the kit matrix. The radiator grille is replaced with a fine meshed part along with a big Mercedes logo for the front and a smaller one to replace the radiator filler cap insignia. The bonnet sides are also replaced and can positioned open or closed like the kit parts, but with a much more realistic thickness. To the rear, the wooden slated sides and rear drop down flap are given new supports and locking mechanisms, whilst the canvas cover benefits from new strapping, support clamps and eyelets. The number plate is also completely replaced with a multi part assembly, although part of the build need to have some plasticard fashioned to the correct size before the etch can be added. The last parts to be added are the windscreen surround, front number plate plinth and headlamp brackets. On top of all the main parts mentioned above, there a host of small details that can be added to the modellers content such as the bonnet toggles and retaining pins.

Conclusion

This is a very nice and well produced set, adding some lovely detail to what is already a very nice kit. Unfortunately the instructions do leave quite a bit to be desired as it is quite difficult to see where the various etch sub assemblies go. But overall a good set. Recommended

In addition to the above set ET Models have also released a replacement wheel set for the Zvezda L4500R Maultier. These wheels are really well moulded with great tread and sidewall detail. The hubs are also well done and are a vast improvement over the three piece kit parts. The moulding stubs are easily removed and on the driving wheels are situated on the bulged areas of the tyres. Only the spare will need to have any real cleaning up, which should tax any modeller.
