Bertie McBoatface Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 So what if Frank Mitchell was really impressed with The Me108 Taifun concept and decided to design a light, fast executive transport aircraft using the Spitfire as a starting point? With a Griffon engine, I guess two pilots, some defensive armament, eight passengers and luggage could be managed... (Well, I can't finish any sensible projects so I'll have a bash at this Friday nights after the pub and see what happens.) 1
Col. Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 10 people in a Spitfire!?! Hope they are all good friends
prowler0000 Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Why am I thinkin' "Flight of the Phoenix"??!?! Can't wait to see THIS one!!!
davidelvy Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Would this be a little like the Spartan Executive? I've always thought that aircraft was a beautiful combination of light passenger carrying capability and sleek lines. This could be very interesting, but I do hope that by "defensive armament" you do not mean you are thinking of dumping a Boulton Paul turret on its spine! (Oh, and wasn't he "Reg", not "Frank"?)
Bertie McBoatface Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 (edited) 10 people in a Spitfire!?! Hope they are all good friends Oh, there's plenty of room in this fuselage. Would this be a little like the Spartan Executive? I've always thought that aircraft was a beautiful combination of light passenger carrying capability and sleek lines. This could be very interesting, but I do hope that by "defensive armament" you do not mean you are thinking of dumping a Boulton Paul turret on its spine! (Oh, and wasn't he "Reg", not "Frank"?) That Executive looks like an overfed P-35, very tasty. Not a BP turret, more like a SM 79 dorsal mg arrangement. (Frank Mitchell? Where the bleedin' 'ell did I get that moniker from? I don't Adam an' Eve it, it's 'Deadenders' an' I ain't even got a TV!) Why am I thinkin' "Flight of the Phoenix"??!?! Can't wait to see THIS one!!! The principle was to use up some of the 'I'll-never-build-that-one" kits from the stash. I had in mind an Airfix late mark Spitfire as a donor, but while the box is tired, the model seems too good to waste now! I may well shift the storyline around a little. So far my scrapheap challenge includes a Revell Wessex, Fujimi FW190, Testors T-33A, Hasegawa Zero, and I need a big engine (or two) from somewhere... Andrew Jones Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Wasn't Frank Mitchell , Reginalds little known cousin, who designed the Supermarine Executive Transport Aircraft ? . He was always in the shade of his well known relative and hence hardly recognised outside of a very small circle of aviation enhusiasts.
Bertie McBoatface Posted October 4, 2012 Author Posted October 4, 2012 I found some engines; Ex-steampunk GB P-38 Alisons, so I've made room on the shelf too.
Daniel Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 Novel! I'm not picturing yet so look forward to seeing some photos!!! Dan
The wooksta V2.0 Posted October 18, 2012 Posted October 18, 2012 There was mention - but no drawings - of a cabin tourer based on the spitfire, capable of carrying 4 people and powered by a Dh Gypsy Major engine. A mate's busy building one in 32nd.
