Tell me about it,I've been spraying both professionally(all types of metal for the oil/gas industry, water industry, mining industry, etc)

and as a hobby(cars, motorbikes, pushbikes, aircraft parts and yes, even models)for about the past 35 years.

The fun and games to be had if specs are, or paint is deviated from the stated in the slightest can be

a pain in the bum to say the least.

LOL reminds me of a friend who worked as an architectural modeller. They were building display models of individual apartments in a tower block. He only had a text list of colour instructions for the decor in the apts so he rang the architects in Sydney (he was in Brisbane) to ask them to send colour chips .....so they "faxed" him a set of the chips for that project...promptly! He rang them back to enquire did they mean for the apartment decor to be in shades of grey?......A parcel came up later, urgently, by courier express....

One seems to remember that back in the mists of time,a prefered mix of 2 parts Humbrol "Sky" to one part (Interior)Grey Green was

deemed a pretty good match too for the elusive "early Spitfire" cockpit green.

As has been said, not as light as "Sky" and not as dark as "Grey Green".

The original Airfix Spit Mk.1 1/24th scale kit called for "Sky" in the cockpit, but that was always thought to be too light a shade.

Thanks for your post, Dave, that's very good to know. I've got Hataka and Vallejo equivalents of Sky and Grey-Green, so I'll try it out with those.

Thanks again and best regards,

Sir,one's cogs are whirring a little more and the mists of 40+ years ago are clearing a little more.

Paint the cockpit, only the cockpit though, all other interior surfaces were silver doped,in the "Sky/Grey-Green" mix.

Once dry, wash lightly with thinned "Grey-Green" to give a little depth and shadowing.

Again, once dry, lightly dry brush with "Sky" to lift the rib and cockpit construction details.

If one remember's correctly, that idea was mooted in an early 70's "Scale Models" article on modelling the then Airfix "big" Spitfire Mk.1.

One would imagine that it'll work for any scale of early Spitfire.

Apropos nothing much, I did a little "test", daubing some samples of the paints I do have onto a piece of white card to see how they compared. They were just given a thorough shake and allowed to dry naturally.

IMG-20230310-084253402-HDR-2.jpg

Now, I realise that this is fundamentally flawed in that this is a digital photograph transferred onto a computer and viewed through a digital monitor, so the margin for variance is large. However, I did play with the image slightly such that it agrees well with the physical samples when viewed on my monitor. Other monitors may vary :D

Incidentally, what were Hataka thinking with their Camotint??? Its the colour of pea soup.....

The Hataka Grey-Green looks quite dark on the sample, but surprisingly it's fine when sprayed:

IMG-20230206-182143426-Copy-1.jpg

The two Sky Type S samples are wildly different: Vallejo seems a very dark and muddy grey, Hataka has a distinctly "butterscotch" tone. I'm not sure if I'd use either of them for their intended purpose, although perhaps if the Hataka were lightened with a very pale grey.....

Both the Hataka Camotint and Vallejo Eau-de-Nil are the sort of shades I had in mind for an "early Spitfire apple green interior", the Eau-de-Nil perhaps slightly more so as its a bit more yellowy to my eyes. For interest, I'm going to try a mix of Grey-Green and Sky as suggested by @Dave Wilko and see where that goes.

Cheers for now,

Mark

And thanks for the reply. So do you think that the colour which might be seen in X4422 (if it is as Lucas says) was possibly a pre-war Supermarine colour?

By the sounds of it, the kind fellow at the Shoreham Aircraft Museum is going to photograph those interior pieces of X4422 which they hold.

Rather exciting to see what they look like.

I have a Titanine UK commercial aircraft paint chart from 1935 and it contains a paint chip of a 'Grey Green - Shade No. TE 38' which appears similar to the war era cockpit Grey Green.

That reminds me....Tamiya did a "darker" sky colour in acrylics for the interior of their A6M Zeke kits. I seem to recall it being mooted as a likely alternative for the early 'eau de Nil" of Spitfire?  No idea if the colour is still available though?

Presumably XF-71 Cockpit Green? This is often used for RAF Grey-Green

Good question I may have a jar somewhere but I dont do Japanese anymore so havent scrutinised that section of the LHS paint rack, as I recall Tamiysa never added these "new" colours for their releases into their standard colour brochures?

I think that the best advice I can offer for the moment is for you to read the SAM article, and then come back to me via this thread if you have any further questions.

Hi Paul,

I've unearthed a copy of the May 2018 SAM with the "Grey Green 1924-1945" article - very interesting reading, thank you. The schematic drawing of the Spitfire/Seafire cockpit makes reference to two Vallejo Model Air colours with 71.302 Sky Type S (plus a yellow tint) for the light grey green. This really surprised me as, from the bottle, it's quite a beige shade and not particularly "greeny" and certainly not "appley" - I was expecting a much greener shade!

As an aside, as per @Dave Wilko's posts, I mixed Sky Type S and Grey-green 2:1 and added it to the bottom of my "test" card:

IMG-20230314-080116725-2.jpg

Usual caveats, of course, digital photo on a digital monitor etc etc :) In reality, the mix appears very similar in tone to the Vallejo 71.302 Sky Type S, if a little greener. Still not as "green" as I was expecting, though. I may try a spot of yellow in the Vallejo Sky and see where that takes me.

Thanks for your help and kind regards,

Mark

@2996 Victor, please don't get too hung up on the Vallejo colours quoted in either this, or any other 'Colour Conundrum' article. To see why, go to the 'Magazines & Books' section and scroll down until you find the 'Updated Paul Lucas Colour Conundrum' thread. If you don't want to wade through the whole thing, go to page 2 and read Jon Kunac-Tabinor's post dated February 18 2022...

It's a good job that you asked me about this because it has led to me finding that I have managed to make a mistake in what I said with regard to the Canadian  colour that Ian Huntley called Cockpit, Green Grey, Light. At some point, probably at the note making stage, I transposed the last two digits in the FS number given for this colour.

It should be FS 24524.

This is why I couldn't find it in my copy of FS595B!

In the light of this, you should disregard everything I wrote that stems from my originally giving the incorrect FS number '2542' such as tracing this colour back to a US Army standard and the match to Humbrol No. 95 Concrete.:fraidnot:

Fortunately, this error does not affect what I said about the colour that is visible in the cockpit of R6915 in the IWM as I continued to refer to the Methuen colour. I can confirm that the general impression of the colour in R6915s cockpit does look to be similar to

FS 24524.:phew:

I wish that I could give you a simple straight out of the bottle match for FS 24524, but I can't. Perhaps the best that I can do is direct you to the e-paint website, just enter 'e-paint' into Google, and then perform a colour search using the number '34524'. This should bring two different entries for the same colour up on your screen that will at least give you an idea of the sort of colour that you should be aiming for.

Of course, if you ask @Casey nicely, perhaps she might perform her magic and come up with a suitable modelling paint for you (us)...:please:

Regards,

Paul.

Interesting and perfectly understandable. I believe that Vallejo colours are sometimes not a great match for their named colour, but are often perfect for other applications (I've been using IDF green for Grey-green until recently, for instance). However, I'm curious how the graphic artists know which shades are appropriate to which applications - presumably they have recourse to the FS or Methuen standards and cross-reference to the Vallejo catalogue.

Thank you for the update on FS24542/FS24524, and the Methuen codes of course. I do realise that a magic "straight-out-of-the-bottle" paint match for such an obscure colour is a virtual impossibility - after so long a period of time even well-documented shades are open for discussion/interpretation, and the degradation of remaining original samples adds another factor to the "mix" as it were.

I've had a look at the e-paint website as you suggested, and indeed two samples come up. What surprised me was how grey the shade appears, even allowing for the digital image/digital screen factor. I wonder where the whole "apple green" myth has come from..... (oh no, another can of worms!).

Thank you once again for all your help and guidance on this, its enormously appreciated.

Kind regards,

Mark

My collection of Interior Grey-greens. I have read various builds on various forums, where these paints were used on the interiors of British WW2 models.

Chris

I routinely use Tamiya XF-71 for RAF cockpit grey-green and used to use the PollyScle version. In real life those two colors are a bit lighter than what I see on my screen. I’m not intending to disparage Chris’ work, rather I am mentioning that colors we post may not be particularly close to how those same colors appear on a different system, iPhone/iPad in my case

I hear you.

I can't find FS24524 in the FS database I have but there is FS34524... I was baffled by this reference before too - it seems the reference suggests it is a semi-gloss version of 34524.

But when it comes to 34524 itself, it looks pretty grim.

Amongst all the paint I've checked there is only one very poor match:

Target: 34524, RGB: #B7C295 (L*=76.09, a=-8.29, b=21.04)

If the paint is on that list and it is not Humbrol 90, then it is worse match than DE00 5.0.

I tried to make some mixes. Not super good results neither, I have two from Tamiya:

Closer match but really not fun to mix due to large ratios:

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #B6C196
        XF-2 Flat White: 22
        XF-4 Yellow Green: 1
        XF-5 Flat Green: 2
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.78

And less close match but more reasonable from measurements point of view

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #BAC294
        XF-2 Flat White: 13
        XF-4 Yellow Green: 1
        XF-5 Flat Green: 1
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 1.37

Or if you want, here is a Golden Fluid Acrylics mix (this one is based on MASS parts, not on volume due to paint viscosity)

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #BAC295
        Titanium White: 3
        Titan Buff: 9
        Sap Green Hue: 1
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.68

This is a fun color!

I can't find FS24524 in the FS database I have but there is FS34524... I was baffled by this reference before too - it seems the reference suggests it is a semi-gloss version of 34524.

From my understanding (could be wrong!) the first number in the FS code states its sheen: 1 is for gloss, 2 for semi-gloss and 3 for semi-matt. Generally these are interchangeable however I have seen some FS codes that are exclusively available in only one or two sheens and not others, which is why I think you couldn't find it in your deck at first. Pretty sure you worked this out anyway but it's worth remembering in case it comes up again. The colour should still be the same it's just the finish that's different.

As you say, personal preference, only my interpretation comes from close inspection of never-repainted panels from a genuine Mk.I. They were also interior sections, so had not been subjected to direct sunlight, in fact we had to wipe (using water) away layers of dirt. I've found increasing numbers of Supermarine, or Castle Bromwich, Spitfires, which appear to have had the similar shade, while Westland, after its initial use (AR213 being the example I saw,) seem to have gone over to the "normal" colour. Hawker used "Humbrol 78" as did many other manufacturers, but Supermarine seem, for some time, to have continued to use their own colour, which appeared in the S6B cockpit (the one in the Science Museum, not Southampton, which appears to have been B&Q-ised.) If you read the Patrick Stevens book, on the Airfix 1/24th kit, you'll find a recommended paint mix, for a "sickly" green which is nowhere near Humbrol's 78.

Ohhh, that Southampton airframe is the one that bothers me a heck of a lot, not least because there's not a hint of wear, unlike the Science Museum's S6B, which is absolutely filthy.

As for the interior colour(s,) I've now seen more than one Spitfire with colours very close to, or an exact match for, Humbrol's 90, but the mix, advocated in the Stevens book, came about as a result of inspection of the Imperial War Museum's Mk.I, which I've never seen, since it's still hanging up.

The Mk.I, at Cosford, was painted with a colour matched to the original, during its rebuild; again, I've not had an opportunity to look inside.

Strangely, Humbrol's 120 is a colour that Accurate Miniatures have recommended for Mustang interiors, and that's one area I'm not going into!

S6B.jpg

This comes from a 1980 book (one of a pair,) solely on cockpit photos, which, for some reason, are, at times, inordinately difficult to scan. This is the first time that it's worked, and is the Science Museum's S6B, which may explain my reticence over the Southampton S6.

In the Stevens book, the authors used M16 Duck-Egg Green, for their model (is it the same as today's 23 Duck Egg Blue, because I don't know?) Their preferred mix, however, was 1 Eau-de-Nil Gloss (now long gone,) with a "slight touch" of 38 Lime Green Gloss (still available.) I have a suspicion that 90 was introduced as this mix, but can't say for sure.

My remark about B&Q wasn't meant as a jibe, but, if, as I suspect, the Southampton airframe is the one that was on display in the open, for years, at Heathrow, it's very likely that the cockpit needed some urgent attention.

A couple of Edgar posts from from 2008.

The original Airfix Spit Mk.1 1/24th scale kit called for "Sky" in the cockpit,  but that was always thought to be too light a shade.

erm.... being pedantic,  Airfix made their own range of paint.   The call was for M16 Duck Green

https://www.scalemates.com/products/img/8/2/5/171825-93-instructions.pdf

this is a scan of the mid 70's instructions.

A conversion table says M16 = Humbrol 23, but it doesn't  (side note, Airfix paint had Humbrol equivalents, but they were not very close

Air recommended M8 for Ducker Egg Blue

A list here https://www.vintage-airfix.com/airfix-history/airfix-to-humbrol-paint-list/

says M8 = H90

and M16 = M23

They don't.  i think these two have been inverted at some point and m8 - H23, and M16 = H90

Note in the link M16 is called 'vellum'  though a look at a 70's boxing of an Airfix Hurricane says M16 duck egg green.

I have remains if a 1/24th Airfix Spitfire. Built Xmas 1976, and I used Airfix paint by choice unless I was enough for the colour to unavailable,   I recall my disgust at the weird blue green Humbrol 30 when I was 9,  while being assured by the shop M3 = H30.

They were wrong, I still have kits done in both.

Anyway,  IIRC my kit was done oper the instructions and the insides are M16

Airfix did recommend M8 for the undersides for the 1/24th Hurricane, see page 14,  and also did a cockpit grey green, M20, also called out.

https://www.scalemates.com/products/img/5/7/7/538577-62-instructions.pdf

Sorry, rambling away from the point on historical matches for Spitfire cockpit, and i can't find my copy of the book mentioned,  or more precisely. don't have time to search in the various places it maybe stashed right now....   But, I seems to recall the paint mix being to do with photographinc the model under construction....

And found it..

"the rest of the cockpit interior was a sickly green shade of protective paint, similar to Humbrol duck egg green (M16)  and this is the colour I used, as I required a matt colour for photographic purposes. A better shade is Humbrol No 1 Eau-De-Nil gloss with a slight touch of gloss Lime No.38, matted down to obtain a slight surface sheen."

Note, M16 an Airfix paint code.  Humbrol 90 did not exist then.

I'll @John  as he's the archivist of old paints.

One of the detail shots has P7350 stencilled in the wheel well,

"P7350 IIa CBAF 14 CBAF MXII 6MU 18-8-40 266Sq 6-9-40 603Sq 17-10-40 CB 1CRU 31-10-40 616Sq 18-3-41 64Sq 10-4-41 Scottish Aviation 5-8-41 CGS 27-4-42 57OTU CB 4-2-43 AST sold scrap J.Dale Donated RAF Colerne. Used in BoB film G-AWIJ Extant with BBMF Coningsby"

and there is also a note that the "harness - air force blue/lavender"  impying a post war blue harness, not unsurprising for a BBMF plane.

Sadly the images Edgar posted of unrestored bits are now gone,   though IIRC one image looked a lot like this, actually looking at the file name

http://www.skyline-apa.com.au/Models/Brooks-Spit/early-Spitfire-seat.jpg  it's the same one

early-Spitfire-seat.jpg

thuis is captioned "wreckage of Spitfire L1037", note the quite dark green on the spars at the bottom of the picture,

Note the most cohesive post I have ever made here, but I hope has some useful bits of information.

If the paint is on that list and it is not Humbrol 90, then it is worse match than DE00 5.0.

I tried to make some mixes. Not super good results neither, I have two from Tamiya:

Closer match but really not fun to mix due to large ratios:

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #B6C196
        XF-2 Flat White: 22
        XF-4 Yellow Green: 1
        XF-5 Flat Green: 2
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.78

And less close match but more reasonable from measurements point of view

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #BAC294
        XF-2 Flat White: 13
        XF-4 Yellow Green: 1
        XF-5 Flat Green: 1
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 1.37

Or if you want, here is a Golden Fluid Acrylics mix (this one is based on MASS parts, not on volume due to paint viscosity)

FS595 - 34524
    Target: #B7C295, Mixture: #BAC295
        Titanium White: 3
        Titan Buff: 9
        Sap Green Hue: 1
   100x100100x100
    DE00: 0.68

This is a fun color!

Hi Casey,

thank you so much for this, its hugely appreciated: the two Tamiya mixes are the most "accessible" from my perspective, so those are the ones I'll be going to for my projects.

Many thanks once again and kind regards,

Mark

From my understanding (could be wrong!) the first number in the FS code states its sheen: 1 is for gloss, 2 for semi-gloss and 3 for semi-matt. Generally these are interchangeable however I have seen some FS codes that are exclusively available in only one or two sheens and not others, which is why I think you couldn't find it in your deck at first. Pretty sure you worked this out anyway but it's worth remembering in case it comes up again. The colour should still be the same it's just the finish that's different.

This is correct. FS 595 does not contain a colour with the number FS 24524. I think that Ian Huntley was trying to convey the idea that the colour he was talking about was similar to FS 34524 in hue but had a semi-gloss finish, thus he gave the reference FS 24524. If this colour was actually produced to meet the requirements of DTD 63, that was supposed to give a full gloss finish, then the reference that would be given in this instance would presumably have been to FS 14524.

As it happens, DTD 63A was revised in March 1940 so as to be less glossy following it being adopted as a camouflage finish pending the introduction of what were designated 'Type 'S' paints. If the sample that Mr Huntley was referring to had been produced after March 1940, then it might well have been to the revised DTD 63A with reduced gloss formulation and thus have had the semi-gloss finish indicated by the FS 24524 reference that he gave.

Having found the error in the original CC article as described above, I am now going to look at the subject of Grey Green again with a view to producing a revised CC article that will correct the earlier mistake and perhaps expand the subject into the post war period as there appear to be a number of questions that need further exploration.

Thank you @2996 Victor for inadvertantly bringing the mistake to my attention and thank you @Casey for putting the time and effort into devising a solution to the problem of how to represent the light cockpit grey green colour using modelling paint.

Regards,

Paul.

Just when you thought that this thread was dead and buried, I have come across something that I either forgot or did not know that I had!

When Humbrol first marketed their range of authentic paints circa 1967, they did so in boxed sets that contained a small leaflet that explained what the colours were used for. Set No.1 was RAF (European) and the accompanying leaflet contained the following statement.

"The Royal Air Force camouflaged all their aircraft from 1939 to patterns set down by the Air Ministry. Cockpit interiors were Pale Green, similar in shade to HUMBROL Standard No.28 but semi gloss in finish."

At that time, Humbrol No. 28 was Matt Sky.

Why Humbrol needed to make reference to No. 28 Matt Sky I don't know, because Sky was included in the Authentic set as HB.5. I have a workable tin of Humbrol No. 28 Matt Sky, and it looks and smells the same as HB.5. As far as I can tell, they are the same paint.

At some point, Humbrol changed the colour of the paint sold as Matt No.28 from Sky to FS 36622, a shade of light grey. This is how it is still sold today so the reference to using Humbrol No. 28 for cockpit interiors is no longer valid.

Here is a quote from Kotare:

"Spitfire Mk.I colour schemes are surprisingly varied and complicated. Interior areas were primed with light grey before being painted aluminium, except for the cockpit between frames 8 & 11 which was painted in a colour described as “Supermarine green” and “apple green”. Note that this is different from the paler, greyer, “Grey Green” (of which various colour mixes have additionally been noted) used on later production Spitfires built by other manufacturers. Major internal components supplied by sub-contractors could be delivered in various shades of grey-green or aluminium or even black".

In the kit instructions for the Mark I, Kotare matches "Supermarine interior green-matt"  to Humbrol 120 or a Tamiya mix of  X71(2) plus X28(1).

I don't know about the Tamiya mix, but Humbrol 120 is quoted as being a match for FS 34227 by Humbrol themselves.

Humbrol 120 is a good match to Grey Green in the MAP colour standard booklets that were issued during the war.

Humbrol 120 is also a good match for the fascimelie rendering of Grey Green in British Aviation Colours of WW II.

Thus Humbrol 120 FS 34227 represents the standard shade of Grey Green and not the paler shades of green that have been the subject of this thread.

Also, whatever shade of green was used inside the cockpit should have a gloss finish.

Humbrol 28 Sky was discontinued in the early 1970s, along with another 15 colours in the standard range. 28 Matt Camouflage Grey was introduced in 1988 as a replacement for Authentic HU10 Grey FS36622 after the Authentic range were completely discontinued.
