Graham T Posted September 16, 2012 Posted September 16, 2012 Made a brief start with some of the cockpit. It's quite hard to sort out what's what & where it goes as nothing is numbered & many of the smaller parts look very similar. I plan on "foiling" the highly polished cowlings, we'll see how THAT goes!
Graham T Posted September 17, 2012 Author Posted September 17, 2012 Some assembly of the cockpit has been managed. I appear to be missing one important part but an email to Ali at A2zee has resulted in a promise to post the necessary! Also received the sheet of chrome bare metal foil.
Graham T Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 Despite my best efforts it's going together quite well! The frame is semi gloss black with some componenets in flat aluminium & steel for the fuel tank - constant reference to the Mushroom book on the Fury/Nimrod is necessary. The cockpit photos in this book are mainly of a preserved Nimrod but apart from a few specific naval systems they are probably largely the same. A dry fit appears to show that it all fits within the fuselage but there's still quite a bit to add such as the guns & their support frame etc., not to mention the seat.
Iain Ogilvie Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 That's quick progress Graham - looking great! Iain
Graham T Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 Just a final shot of the cockpit assembly before it disappears inside the fuselage!. Instrument panel, gun cradles & guns added. One mistake with the kit is that the guns are "handed" & both cocking handles should be inboard...ah well never mind!
Graham T Posted September 20, 2012 Author Posted September 20, 2012 Tottering on it's undercart - I recall awful issues when reaching this stage on the Montex Gamecock due to the complete lack of any kind of positive location of the legs, braces & axle - happily they seem to have remedied this on the Fury with some cleverly molded attachment points on the inside of the each wheel, add the white metal legs provided on this AlleyCats issue of the Montex kit & the process is much less stressful! Also a shot that attempts to show the detail visible in the cockpit. I intend to leave the pilots access hatch down to show this off on the finished model.
Graham T Posted September 23, 2012 Author Posted September 23, 2012 (edited) Tail feathers on. I fabricated a couple of tiny cable run throughs for beneath the tail plane that route the elevator control cable from the fuselage outlet to the control horns. Simply short lengths of fine tube glued to pieces of thin plasticard & then attached beneath the tail planes. Small but quite necessary! A few small holes appeared as I was sanding the fuselage joint but nothing too serious. Edited September 23, 2012 by Graham T
AndyC Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Wonderful work Graham - you're doing it proud
smuts Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Hi, very nice so far, looks to be a nice build too.. Andy.
Graham T Posted October 3, 2012 Author Posted October 3, 2012 Got some paint on. Xtracolour aluminium. Then, when thoroughly dry I started the fpiling process. Not too sure about this as the number of compund curved on the front end oif the Fury makes it a tough job for a first effort!
heloman1 Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Nice workl there Graham, pity the cockpit wil be almost lost in the fuselage after all your work! Nice work with the foil. Colin on the Afrcia Station
Graham T Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 Bare Metal foil application finished & I have mixed thoughts about this method. Decals on & they were very good quality (far better than the masks that accompanied the original Montex issues of this kit). The wing struts are all white metal - again an improvement over the Montex resin struts. The cabane struts are virtually self aligning & once these had set, I mounted the upper wing. Problem - the gap between the port upper & lower wings was WAY to wide for the interplane struts & way too narrow on the starboard side. I attached a strut between the port wings & clamped it with a berna clamp while the glue sets. It looks a little lop sided at the moment but I'm optimistic that once all the struts are in place & the clamps are off, all will line up - here's hoping anyway! Also the prop has received an oil paint streaking.
smuts Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Fantastic, a real nice build on the best looking prewar RAF fighter of all... Andy
Graham T Posted October 8, 2012 Author Posted October 8, 2012 Rigging started. The Fury has double flying wires running from just above the forward u/c struts to the upper wing. For each set I cut four short lengths of narrow tube & CA'd them together in two side by side pairs. Then I inserted a length of fuse wire into each tube which I twisted together before cutting them short. Into the other ends of each tube went a length of Eezeline the other ends of which were inserted into the other pair of tube/fuse wire units. One end of this assembly was glued into a hole in the fuselage & the other into a small hole predrilled in the upper wing. The fusewire allows adjustment so the turnbuckles & wires appear inline with each other as they should be. Simples. There's not a lot of other rigging which is all effected with Eezeline & tube turnbuckles. See the slight wrinkling of the bare metal foil nose cowlings. It's not quite so noticeable in the flesh as the camera appears to suggest!
Doug Rogers Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 Cameras are merciless aren't they. Looks great Graham, I love Fury's and yours looks really nice.
CliffB Posted October 13, 2012 Posted October 13, 2012 That rigging is looking really good Graham Cheers Cliff
JMChladek Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Even with the slight foil wrinkling, I really love the results you achieved with your Fury. All the Hawker Fury based bipes (Nimrod, Demon, Hartbees) just seem to have a sweet look to them, like a classic race car for the air.
