Wez
I was idly looking at the stash and my brace of Eduard MiG-21's caught my eye and it got me thinking about that pesky bluish-green colour the Russians have used in the cockpits of some of their jets. I've looked at various magazines, book and interweb pictures of cockpits painted in this colour and there seems to be a huge variation, some are more blue others are more green, some seem subdued whilst others seem downright garish and gaudy. So the question is this does anybody have a paint match for this colour, I'd prefer to use Humbrol because I can get it locally, I also prefer to work in enamels because most of my painting is done with a brush! I have an old tin of Xtracolor Russian cockpit green that I used many years back on a Fujimi MiG-21, it looked good to me then but I've since read that it's completely wrong. From my research I have to ask, given the variation I've found between pictures how far out is it? Has anybody physically actually compared it to a Russian cockpit? Shar2
Can't help with a Humbrol colour, but WEM do a whole selection of Russian Air Force colours, including those for the cockpit.
SaintsPhil
As you rightly said they vary in shade from aircraft to aircraft so you can't go far wrong with any lurid turquoise mix you make! I painted the pit of my Mig21 in a mix of Vallejo Turquoise and olive green plus a dash of white, that was pretty close to the decal colour, I built the weekend edition hence no PE There are a few threads about the net about match colours to the eduard etch so it depends which route you take
Wez
Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye out for the WEM paints when I'm up at Farnborough next weekend although I like Phil's suggestion, I guess if I want to use the Eduard etched details I'll need to match their colours. pigsty
If you want easy availability, Hu109 and two coats of Emerald ink from Winsor & Newton. You can pick up the ink in almost any art supplies shop. Being translucent, it acts as its own shading, too.

Sean Thanks, I'll look into that, I think we may have some of that lurking around at home... Juilen, I've already got the Xtracolor paint... ...it's just from previous I'd understood it wasn't too accurate, see my original post. sammy da fish
Going back to the original post, any tips for using Humbrol enamels, as a base, as these are readliy availible to most of us in the UK. And not Gunze/Vallejo/ Mr colour please.
JMChladek
I don't have a Humbrol recommendation, but if there is a model train shop in your area that carries Floquil RR colors, NYC Jade Green is an appropriately obnoxious turquoise color that to my eye can work for Russian cockpit green. It is an enamel shade so that hits one of your two targets. http://www.testors.com/product/F110330
Flankerman
Here's a few pics I've taken over the years showing what it should look like...... MiG-21.... MiG-23 (1)..... MiG-23 (2)..... Mi-24A...... There are variations on the real thing - so don't get too hung up over an exact match....... Ken
