SaintsPhil
Evening every one! I've been having some strange reactions when spraying Mr Color (the laquer based type) thinned with Mr color thinners, which I assume is ok given the instruction are in Japanese! I seemed to get what I can only describe as cob webs developed on the model! I was cleaning the airbrush between colours with cellulose thinners. Anyone had this happen or can shed any light on the issue?
Scimitar F1
You haven't thinned the paint enough and it is drying mid-air. Ideally you should use the levelling thinner for a better finish as it has some form of flow enahancer. Will
SaintsPhil
Thanks, it was actually the levelling thinners I was using, I thought it was pretty thin but I guess not! It went away after a few sprays, so maybe the paint wasn't mixed with the thinner properly. Thanks for your help!
c.smith10
Hi Im using mr color with there levelling thinners too and had similar problems. the way i have got round it is to mix the paint and thinners in the cheap plastic party cups that you can pick up 100 for £1. Once i started mixing paints this way i had no more problems. If you dont want to go down that route then make sure you put the thinners in the airbrush paint cup first and add the paint slowly this will stop the spiders web but you still end up with thicker, not properly thinned paint at the bottom of the cup. Other than that and the smell i found these the best paints i have ever used cheers Edited September 3, 2012 by c.smith10
SaintsPhil
Thanks, I do normally mix externally but I was worried the hot thinners might melt the plastic shot glasses I use! Guess I'll test first... Incidently I saw a good tip for mixing paint in the paint cup, in an airbrush video. Loosen the nozzle so it blows air back into the cup, as if you're backflushing, just make sure you cover the top!! I agree fantastic paints Thanks again gents. c.smith10
I've had no problem mixing Mr Color in Asda party cups. Although there thinners are hot i dont think they are hot enough to melt most plastics. I have used the levelling thinners on a Q tip to remove paint with no affect to the underlying plastic! Interesting idea on the blow back mixing! only problem for me is my H&S airbrush doesnt have a lid!!
SaintsPhil
Neither does mine, I just put a bit of kitchen roll over the top, or point it away from me, I spray in garage do doesnt really matter if it goes on floor!
Scimitar F1
What pressure are you spraying at? I always put my finger over the opening and bubble the paint to mix it - more important with Alclad. It never leaves the cup or makes a mess. I always start with a quick blast of thinner before adding the paint Will

SaintsPhil
Usually somewhere around 15psi, but was a but lower as I was trying to do some minor touch ups. I find I can normally bubble in the cup, but the trigger on the H&S is a little loose so sometimes it spits over. I normally always start with thinners
