madaboutmodels
Hello Everyone Right another question session!!!! I must be driving people mad... lol.... So moving quickly on from the 707 i have deided i want to do a series of MD-80s. Id like to do the following. Alitalia MD-82 http://img.planespotters.net/photo/299000/original/I-DATI-Alitalia-McDonnell-Douglas-MD-82_PlanespottersNet_299842.jpg Airtours MD-83 http://www.flickr.com/photos/jordi757/3480792833/ Air Liberte MD-83 http://www.al-airliners.be/k-o/liberte/ijmd-83-2.jpg SAS MD-87 http://www.freefoto.com/images/2050/38/2050_38_19---SAS-McDonnell-Douglas-MD-87-SE-DIF_web.jpg As with many other Aircraft Sub types i have no idea at all how to tell them apart or what kits there are of them. So i want to do all of these in 1/144. I know that Mincraft has released an MD-80, thats all it says on the box. So how do i tell what version of MD-80 is in the box. Also waht modifications on the MD-80 kit will i need to do? So i am pretty much asking what vrsion and how do i do it? Thanks Bradley.
Dave Swindell
Hi Bradley Your one stop shop for all things DC9/MD80 series is Here Conversion bits from Braz are Here As far as I'm aware all Minicraft kits contain the same plastic and have both pointy & screwdriver tails. You should be able to build your 82 & 83 OOB The 87 wil require a shorter fuselage (cut & shut) and some scratch building on the fin if you cant find/afford a Braz replacement. The kit is one of Minicraft's best airliners, but there's still room for superdetailing if you want to! Dave.

madaboutmodels
So i can build the -82 and -83 out of the box. So i need to shorten and replace the tail for tge -87?
XV571
Hi Bradley, Yes, ; the differences were mainly in the engine type fitted, fuel capacity and operating weights, Externally they were identical although early aircraft didn't have the 'screwdriver' tail but it could be swapped around. As always check on the actual aircraft you want to build. The MD-87 was shortened by 5 metres/16.5 ft bringing the fuselage length back to that of the DC9-51. The fin was extended 10 inches, there was an extra fairing between the engine and the fuselage and an extra long strake on each engine nacelle. I think this was the version that introduced the screwdriver tail fairing. Welshmodels do a MD-87 fuselage: http://www.welshmode...k/FUSELAGE.html. They also have a conversions with Spanair or Austrian decals for the MD-87 (and one for a Delta MD-90-30) http://www.welshmode...uk/CONVERT.html. These might be just the thing to cut your vacform teeth on as everything else can be from the Minicraft kit. HTH Jonathan
Jessica
Welsh models do the MD-87 and -90. Only the fuselage is vac in these kits, which will help you get over your vacuphobia. Fly and Airfix do the DC-9-30 and Contrails does a resin 717. All in all modellers are well served for the DC-9 family. You can chop up DC-9 kits to do the -10, -20, -40 and -50 very easily. They're ideal first conversion projects. As mentioned above, the MD-80, 81, 82 and 83 were all externally identical, so the Minicraft kit will work for any of them. Jessica
Don't forget that the 717 wing is one fuselage frame aft of the DC-9-30's, to balance the heavier engines. Cut out a ring of fuselage one window wide immediately aft of the wing-fuselage fairing and glue it in just forward.
madaboutmodels
Oh, i didnt know the 717 was different length to the DC-9. In all honesty im not goibgto bothe with a little thing like that. I know it wont be accurate....

Jessica
The 717 is not a different length. The problem when compared to a DC-9-30 is that the wing is farther back, making the nose look longer and the tail look shorter. It's noticeable when parked right beside a DC-9.
