1st kit in 30+ years

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm not going to start with the obligatory box shot or sprues because this is a Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Mk I and you all know what they look like. It's the first time in over 30 years that I have painted something smaller than a bedroom so will be interested to hear what you have to say. Sycophantic flattery is preferred but if you want to tear it to pieces, feel free.

Here are the seat and dash assembled and painted. The extra details were added with an Eduard Zoom PE kit. I hadn't used PE before and thought it might be fun to have a try and see what it's like. It all seemed to go together reasonably easily. The headrest has been repainted black and a couple of bits on the dash have been repainted also.

Cheers, guys. I have to confess that when I started this I hadn't intended to post up a detailed build report so the photos aren't that good and there aren't that many of them. However on with the story. Feeling happy with the cockpit I continued with putting the fuselage and wings together I decided to have a go at painting the thing. First on went an under coat of white and when that was dry I applied a coat of Dark Earth. This was where it all started to go wrong and the results were pretty poor, to be honest. So down to Halfords for a pack of P2000 wet and dry and lots of sanding later I had this.

A while later and with new airbrush in hand I went to work.

I spent the best part of two days trying out different ways of masking the camouflage pattern. I ended up using blu tack and masking tape which gave me the slightly soft edge that I wanted.

Underside with port wing painted. I used black with some red added although I'm not sure if it made much difference .

So this is more or less where I am now. I have added a little light weathering here and there and streaking from the exhausts and guns. Project on hold now until payday.

A lot of folks would have binned that after the paint catastrophe, so well done for not giving up on it - I hate seeing kits scrapped unless they're total mulch :) Looking good - the red in the black is just about visible. I usually start my "black" painting with something around the Panzer Grey colour, and take it from there :)

Cheers - it's the old "scale black" debate. Personally, I go for the Panzer Grey and then change the shades from there with shading or washes/filters. It breaks up the constant tone then too :)

That's looking pretty good to me. Straight to an airbrush as well that's brave :analintruder:

Fairy Power cleaner is your friend if you need to strip paint, spray it on leave in a bag and most of the paint will come off quite easily. There's also commercial stuff that does the job I'll have to go to the garage to get the name if you need it.

Well, I've had some experience of paint spraying in the past although long, long ago and I used an airbrush in my earlier incarnation as a model builder. I will remember the Fairy Power cleaner tip, although of course I won't ever have to repair another paint job again. :banghead: (famous last words)

Well, you know how it is, you take a load of stuff down to the dump and on the way back you accidently turn left at the roundabout instead of right and you end up at your local model shop :bobby: Returning home with a can of gloss varnish I decided I would have another go at that black wing. So I repainted it a much lighter grey and added a couple more coats, each darker than the previous one. It is now quite a bit lighter than before but hopefully after a wash or two it will darken up but lose some of the uniformity. Anyway here it is.

Cool!

Another returner here, so I will learn a lot from you

What airbrush and compressor are you using?

I knew someone would ask me this sooner or later. I bought a chinese airbrush very cheaply off ebay (snipers are wonderful tools  and times are hard) after reading some rave reviews on another forum. It is one of these and I have to say it behaves very well.

I'm not using a compressor yet, am still saving.

Thanks, I was pleased with the way the camo turned out to be honest. I don't know how well it comes across in the photos but the lines have a very slight softness to the edge which is the effect I wanted. Have been putting some small parts together tonight and getting it ready for a few coats of gloss varnish.

Undercarriage and propeller built and dry fitted, exhaust pipes painted and dry fitted. I may yet replace the pipes with some ultracast pieces that I have on order.

It would be nice if I can get the gloss on as I am going to be away so won't be able to do anymore for a week.

No updates for a while but that doesn't mean I haven't been busy. All decals now on and painting finished. Cockpit door done. Aerial mast done. Jobs left to do are fit the pitot tube and rear wheel, fit and finish the canopy, fit aerial and IFF wires and glue all the bits together. There is a tiny bit of PE from the starboard leg which came off and I thought it was gone but I found it today so that will be done too.
