I post this in hope of some kind person/s may have the knowlage in digging a little deeper..

The story is during WW2 the people of Mansfield & Nottingham donated towards building a spitfire, Both of my great grandads donated to the scheme, both miners in the village of clipstone, Mansfield, so knowing this information have made a search on the net trying to find, ref pics and info of the aircraft with very little joy, even with the older members of the community not knowing, with a view of constructing a model of the Sherwood Forester for my grandad as a gift as it was he who informed me of it, In another twist, which im sure is nothing other than maybe pure coincidence but the pilot who died when the spitfire crashed had the surname of my late grandmothers maiden name, below is all the info I have found during my search, thanks for looking, Mark

+ June 19th 1943, “Casualty: Spitfire R7198 Pilot 1467449 Sgt Mosley J.E. crashed while on a cross country exercise at Talisker (Isle of Skye). The pilot was killed and the aircraft a complete wreck.

+ Serving with No. 8 OTU (Operational Training Unit) at RAF Dyce. This aircraft held the "Presentation Spitfire" name `SHERWOOD FORESTER`. The Presentation Spitfire scheme appealed directly to the patriotism of commercial companies, wealthy families, communities and any other groups of people who could stump up £5,000 or so to pay for the construction of it, The true cost was around £12,000.

+ R7198 Spitfire Mk. I / PR.IV

Named "Sherwood Forester" With No. 412 (F) Squadron, RCAF, from 7 July 1941.

Later converted to PR.IV.

Cheers, Mark

Afraid I can't offer any help with your quest Mark but was interested to read about the particular machine and it's time at Dyce with 8OTU as a PR.IV

There was a Spitfire which crashed around 1943 at what is now the site of Alford Ski Slope and quite close to where I used to live. Always ment to look into this further and find out more about the aircraft and pilot involved but never did.

Good luck with your research.
