Generic a/c wheel paint masks..

Just a thought, I wondered if there were available sheets of wheel disc sticky paint masks in various sizes to enable easier wheel/tyre painting. Had an idea that it might be a bit cheaper than buying a speficic Eduard type mask sheet for one aircraft. Something along the lines of those Blick/Letraset sheets of coloured sticky spots one can buy in Smiths.

Anyone any idea?

I have a metal circle template which I use to cut masks out of Tamiya tape. The mask was designed for AFV modelling.

There are similar plastic ones at stationary shops but they would not be as resistant to slips with the razor knife.

Can't recall the brand - I'll have to check when I get home.

Cheers

I use a generic punch set from a hardware store to punch smaller ( 1/144 and 1/72) wheel masks from Tamiay tape. Seems to work ok for me.

What do these look like so I can try and get some?

Here is a link to some Ebay listings http://compare.ebay.com.au/like/271012178132?ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes

I only paid a couple of dollars for mine from a $2 shop. It gets me by.

You don't need much pressure to make the masks either. Just lay the tape on a craft mat and press the punch into the tape with hand pressure.

The Olfa cutter or circular templates are usually too large in diameter for my purposes (1:72 scale).

I needed some masks for the circular portholes on an Amodel 'Space Ship One' - so I found a piece of brass tubing of the right size and sharpened the end with a circular file.

I then used it as a punch on Tamiya tape to make the masks - which worked fine as long as I kept sharpening the cutting edge.

On a recent model, to mask the dozens of circular windows, I scoured the local HobbCraft shop and found some self-adhesive circular 'Gem Stones' of varying diameters.

Prised off the backing sheet, they make excellent masks for circular windows and would probably work for wheel hubs as well.

A sheet of 100 gems in 3 different sizes only cost £1.99.

Another cheap tool that can do wonders is a leather punch tool. Works fine for many uses, not only I use this to make circular masks but it also cuts thin plasticard... actually I even cut succesfully 1 mm plasticard with it, that is not so thin....
