Ford Zakspeed Turbo Capri 1979-82 Scratchbuild 1/12 scale

Recommended Posts

Hi Christian. I think you'll have to use a different casting method/product for the clear lenses, They need a hard base with a soft second half, this allows for the resin to be supported whilst setting/curing as it takes substanitally longer then the normal resin. If memeory seves me it's something to do with the lack of cobalt the red componant which is one of the curing agents in resins (if my thinking is correct). Your resin supplier should be able to give you the relevent information, Great work so far, thatnks for all the pics.

Hey guys, here are some pics from the rear lights.

3261633231363739.jpg

So they look like when they come out of the mold.Everything a bit cloudy.

3562396466616431.jpg

So i polished the right one in a rush.Looks a bit better.

3733303732626162.jpg

So i colored the glasses with tamiya clear and it's nearly ok,i think.

6437613137626532.jpg

Here they are at there place onto the car.looks good.Maybe i need to invest more time into the polish step and use some wet paper before the tamiya polish gel.

The front glasses are not really good!

3366343666353230.jpg

This is looking nearly that what it should be.Even when there is a big bubble,it looks like a glass.

6432646163623537.jpg

But the other ones i have made are far away from what it should be!

But the second bunch is casted and i changed the way i have done it at the first.

So i hope the second ones getting better.

I know that this sort of cast is not the easiest one and i will get a lot of parts for the trash bag.

But i dont know how i can make it better?

I must use a 2 piece mold because of the fine structure inside the glass. So i can't use the good stuff that curse with uv light.

I will take a look tomorrow and hope it look's a bit better than this shot.

Hi

very intresting, bit of advise, when you store the moulds part fill with resin in the roof bonnet and boot area, this will ensure that over time the moulds will not distort over time and maintain the correct shape, i cast truck cab shells and always now do this as i have had several moulds distort, carefully remove part filled resin casting and trim off any sharpe edges then refit when moulds not being used.

Hiho,

before santa is coming to town,i got a small update on the capri.

3664343639626331.jpg

The underfloor was made with plastic sheets in 2,5mm.

I tried to build up the diffuser and some small details too.

6533336439623661.jpg

The front was made of ureol parts in 2mm thickness. That stuff is better for sanding and cutting.I closed the box between the front tires because its a curbside build.

6430383335616430.jpg

Here is a close shot of the diffuser.

6162623331383937.jpg

A lot of work must be done until the rear tires fits better under the rear fenders.

6665626566363463.jpg

The door needs some re-shape for the door knob.He was on the wrong place, but now its changed.

I hope i can spend more time to the capri in the next weeks. So there will be more updates coming.

Hi Mick, Interesting, when I was casting I was always instructed to wash my moulds thoroughly to get rid of any residualy volatiles and keep them in a box with a 40 watt bulb open areas facing downwards. Would it not be better to cast some plaster of Paris (less toxic to the rubber) into the moulds to help keep their shape?

A really great project here.

I used to love the JPS coloured capri injection when I was (a lot) younger.

Will you be selling 'kits' of this when you're done?????

Even a kit of your 'basic' parts would be great for the more advanced modeller who enjoys a bit of 'scratch' building.

Put me down for a set of bits.

Roy.

Thanks guys for your words!

I'm proud that you like it.

I'm actually selling my last kit on ebay right now.

I made two sets of a "black edition".

This is the last for a while because i want to build the capri a step further. But when i made resin copies i don't have the time to.

May bee at the holidays i can make some new kits of it.

Here is the link to the black one:

I let you know when i got some more ready,ok?

kind regards

Another small step forward.

I have done the rear trunk.A lot of small parts are missing, but first i must do all the scratchparts before i do the small stuff.

6662363630353030.jpg

The inside is also a step further.

I have made the middle tunnel and some small parts on the bottom. The seat is in the right place.

6161353030316361.jpg

Next will be the cage, but first i have take a closer look to my reference pics.

Hi,

next update is coming.

The capri stands on his own wheels.I think he is looking very well.

3534613331356535.jpg

The chassis got the right high.I think this is ok.

6363386166666162.jpg

6539333133626432.jpg

6639363434623466.jpg

The roll cage is ready now, until the putty is sanded.

6163363735333264.jpg

The seat is also put in the right place and connected with styrene rod.

At least i put the steering wheel in his place.

So,enough for today.Next step will be the dashboard.

Thanks for watching!

Happy New Year!

Next work was the gauge's on the dashboard.

They got an small diameter of about 5mm and an small ring around them.

6634396335663039.jpg

How to do that small stuff?

First i wanted to use an aluminum pipe with a round of 6mm.

But i dont got one at home.

So i re-thought what i can use.

I bought some time ago stuff in german called "Aderendhülsen" for electrical stuff.

It got a nice shape around the opening, but also the wrong size.

The outer diameter is 5,2mm.This is the diameter i need inside.

So i used a set of round tools and make it a bit wider.

3064633132663733.jpg

3-4 punches with a hammer and it fits the decals.

3036333438636361.jpg

3535383264303836.jpg

I put it into the holes and it looks fine.I make small sheet into the holes, than the decals and than a small clear round on the top of them.

Finished!

  • 2 weeks later...

It's done finally!

Most parts are done and the rest is fine work.

Tomorrow the capri becomes his first coat of primer.

Yes!

3630663037396434.jpg

The last days i worked at the windows.I made a small step with styrene where the glass can be glued to.

It looks nice in my eyes.

Don't look at the dust,i sanded it smooth for priming.
