Ford Zakspeed Turbo Capri 1979-82 Scratchbuild 1/12 scale

Recommended Posts

Hello,

after all the comments to my finished builds, here are my current "on and off" project.

I want to make an Zakspeed Turbo Capri in 1/12 scale.

There is no proper kit in this scale,so i have to do my own one.

Here are the current status of the car.

Its all made by myself.

Today i made the air intakes ready. Here are some pics.

The reason why i made this car is this little pic from 1982 at Hockenheim/Germany.

It shows me at the age of 11 sitting in the capri from my hero Klaus Niedzwiedz.

So i began to build my own capri.

Its still a long way to go.

kind regards

Welcome, Sir!

What a superb project; a bit of 'proper modelling' and it looks like it's going nicely.

Watching with interest!

That's a fabulous scratch-build! :clap2: I shall watch this with interest - how are you planning on doing the glazing? Is the master a blank to vac or fibreglass the final body shell over, or do you plan to hollow it out? :hmmm:

Thanks guys!

I want to make the body from fiberglass.

At the beginning of this project,i was thinking of making each body part as a seperate part.I wanted to make one hood, one roof and 2 doors.I also planned to make each of the 4 fenders.

The hole car should be open and i planned to make a tube frame with a full engine and stuff.

So i began to make the moulds from the master.

6630343132343031.jpg

here are the moulds of the complete body.

3239303232323733.jpg

There are the first roof of the capri.

6235656365373762.jpg

and the hood.

6463636131373966.jpg

some rims and tyres.

3139666165386437.jpg

and the Ford engine from a good friend from austria.

3832626333333966.jpg

But after a break,i was re-thinking my plans.

Its nearly impossible to make the tube frame and put every bodypart on the right plaace.

Thats so muchwork i dont want to spend right now.

I changed my plans and now i want to make a single body.

I want to build this car,and maybee when ißm in the right mood,i open the doors and the hood.

But first goal is the body work. After that i make an sillicon mould of it.My first one!

I hope it works at the end?

The glazing should be simple,i hope?

The shape of the glasses at the side and back is nearly flat.So no big problem.

The front window is a bit round, but not so much.

When it dosent work with bending by hand,i got a heat vacuum box made by my self.I onlf need a master and can make my copies from it.

It all sounds very simple, but i know its a long way to go!

Wow - a massively impressive project.

You do know that Tamiya did a 1/24 Zakspeed Capri around the early 1980s?

Which I will now have to go into my loft, retrieve and photograph for you.

Mine is Black though. I seem to remember a huge rear aerofoil on it as well.

I think there's one lurking in the first groups of photo's which is the reference . . .

Yes,i used the tamiya capri for my digitize data of the big one.

I got about 3 of them at home.Every needs to be done in different color styles.

Its a good reference, but i learned that tamiya has made some changes of the shape.

Mine will be a thing betwenn the tamiya and the real one.

The doors are very hard to mould when they got the real shape.

Tamiya find an easy way to produce there moulds. The real car has massive undercuts.I dont know if its possible to make a functional mould of it?

So i make it more like tamiya.

Every time i take a look at my pics,i found some pieces where i need to take some changes.

But right now,i only have to make some small parts and the body is ready for a layer of primer.

Hiho,

here are the masterbody, nearly 99% finished.

The rear spoiler is not glued to the body,he will be cast as an extra part.

Some small holes and the lines need some re-work.But not too much.

Here are the pics:

3635613066333436.jpg

If someone find parts of the body that dont look in the right shape, please let me know.

Now i can make some changes to the body. When the mould is done i dont have that option.

Thanks!

Hi,

i made my first sillicon mould.Im happy with it.It gone be ok for the first one.

6131373563643266.jpg

One small airbubble is in it,but that dosent matters.

I only think that my sillicon is not enough for the rear tyre, the rear wing and the hole body.

I need to buy more of this stuff.

Very Nice!! I'm building a Mk1 RS3100 Model!

Grew up around Capri's, My Step Dad has 2 Mk1's and a Mk3, and My Mum uses her Mk3 as her Daily driver! :)

The Zakspeed is a personal favourite of mine, alongside the 280 Brooklands (Especially the Turbo Technic's Converted ones :coolio:)

Watching this with great interest and inspiration! :)

Hello,

after 10 days vacation in lanzarote/spain,i am back in buisness.

I tested my sillikon moulds that i made before my holidays with resin now.

Rear tyre with rims:

rear spoiler

6633316137373731.jpg

and the main body mould was modified so i need not so much sillicon.

6630646330386533.jpg

Now i wait for my 3kg sillicon that i need.

kind regards

Hi Keef,

my first intention was to make two sets for my own use.

But i was ask many times if i want to do a complete kit of the capri.

So i changed my mind and try to make it possible.

Maybee its gone not to be a full kit,but i want to make the body with chassis and tyres and some inner parts.

Thats my goal at the moment.

First i wanted to make it with fiberglass. But now i decieded against and i want to make a slush moulding with resin.I thought about 3-4mm thickness.

Fantastic work there Christain, real model engineering. I like the way you have support blocks for your rubber moulds thus preventing distortion. I'm looking forward to seeing you first casts.

Please keep the pictures coming.
