kpc7676 Posted July 30, 2012 Posted July 30, 2012 (edited) HI all, First in it seems to log my entry, obviously I've been looking forward to this one I will be entering with this Hasegawa 1/48 CF-104D. I will be doing a 439 Sq bird in an all over green scheme that will be heavily weathered and beaten like you can expect from such schemes (it's the one with the tiger on the tail). And I will be utilising a number of AM bits and pieces, including True Details seats, Master pitot, Aires exhaust and Quickboost intake covers. This will be the first jet I've done in a while so I look forward to the challenges it will no doubt give, and look forward to sharing it with you all as the build progresses. And I will not start until the official bell is rung, just getting it onto the board now as I have the time available. Edited July 30, 2012 by kpc7676
SaintsPhil Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 You beat me to the first build thread by a matter of minutes! Good luck with the build Phil
Giorgio N Posted July 31, 2012 Posted July 31, 2012 Nice choice ! These green Canadian aircrafts really showed some heavy weathering, it will be an interesting challenge !
kpc7676 Posted August 14, 2012 Author Posted August 14, 2012 Haven't forgotten guys about this one. Started tonight with some cockpit work, some pics to follow by the weekend. Some tricky engineering noted already as the resin ejection seats need the guide rails to be further apart and therefore some build up required between the rail joins. As I said, pics shortly, and serious progress will be made over the next week or so, I promise
Paul J Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 Look forward to this. I'm doing a similar subject to 1/72nd and in the bare metal scheme.
kpc7676 Posted August 16, 2012 Author Posted August 16, 2012 Some basic pics from today. Have the seats cut from the casting blocks and the rails attached. The fit of the seats in the cockpit is great but there was a need for some putty on where the rails join at the rear of the seat. Next up is the cockpit painting and the instrument panels. The seats will get psinted up at a later stage, no need to put them in to get in the way. More to follow over the weekend.
kpc7676 Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 The first serious update...sorry for the delay, busy with plenty of personal stuff along with trying to work away on my P-51 for the USAAF GB. The wheel bay, sprayed with Gunze silver and darkened up with some dark grey pastels. The cockpit tub, instrument panels and sticks....decals utilised and settled with heaps of microset, really happy with the end result, still yet to apply the matt clear coat to seal everything in. And the LOVELY Aries exhaust nozzle. First time I have used Aries exhausts...really easy to put together and a real treat after some Alclad jet exhaust is sprayed along with a tad of aluminium over the top. Seats are still getting tidied up, will post pics of them once I get them done. Hope to have the fuse together tomorrow and then it's onto the wings and making preps for the colour scheme.
Paul J Posted August 25, 2012 Posted August 25, 2012 Nice work so far. Quite interested to see what green you're going to use and how 'badly' weathered its going to become!
kpc7676 Posted August 25, 2012 Author Posted August 25, 2012 Nice work so far. Quite interested to see what green you're going to use and how 'badly' weathered its going to become! Thanks Paul, Still yet to even look up what green I will use, but will hopefully be a Gunze colour..and yes, it will be HEAVILY weathered, that's a certainty.
Calum Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 Looking Good Kev. The pits look good and will be better once you flatten it them down. I really like decals over rasied detail for the instrument panel. As long as the decal is correctly sized you can get a really great result in a short time. Look forward to following this one as it goes on.
kpc7676 Posted September 19, 2012 Author Posted September 19, 2012 Finally, an update.......been busy finishing up the Mustang and getting our new daughter settled in at home. I have now put the fuselage together and painted up the seats, along with starting work on the wings, mainly in filling thiose damn ejector pins marks on the underside of the flaps and slats. A few seams to fill, but have worked damn hard to ensure no detail is lost around the area to be filled. The seats are done, only took a little bit of careful painting to get them to this level, still need to dirty them up a little and add a few scratches and marks with a silver pencil. And an example of the Mr Surfacer ejector pin filling. Expect wings to get attached over the weekend, and then it's nearly time for some paint
RNoAF Aerobatic Team Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 Looking very good! Keep it up!
Finn Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Nice work. One thing on the seats, on the CF-104 the "knee knockers' ( the guards that deploy during ejection to keep the legs in place) on the side of the seat, were painted with yellow and black stripes. A b&w pic can be seen here: http://www.ejection-history.org.uk/project/Biographies/H/Harrison_Ralph_CF-104/HarrisonRalph.htm Jari

Giorgio N Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Nice job on the seats ! With the fuselage closed I can see the build progressing fast from now on.
kpc7676 Posted September 28, 2012 Author Posted September 28, 2012 Intakes and wings attached, nearly ready for the paint shop, pics to come tomorrow.
kpc7676 Posted October 1, 2012 Author Posted October 1, 2012 A minor update. Wings attached, intakes attached, some Mr Surfacer now applied to some areas on the top and bottom of these (along with some other little ares that I reckon needed a touch up). Nose cone together and filled. Next up is the final clean up before masking and painting, and I will most probably assemble and clean up the fuel tanks and apply them prior to painting too. Have been working on my Bf-108 a little too much at the expense of this one, but now I am refocusing attention here to have it done by GB end....I hope.
Calum Posted October 1, 2012 Posted October 1, 2012 Put that German thing away Kev and get back to job at hand
kpc7676 Posted October 2, 2012 Author Posted October 2, 2012 Put that German thing away Kev and get back to job at hand German? It's sorta a little Japanese and airliner like mate, but then again, it has a Messerschmitt name doesn't it? It's on hold, Starfighter is away again, really want to finish this one.
Giorgio N Posted October 2, 2012 Posted October 2, 2012 Nice job Kev ! There's still a month before the end of this GB, I'm sure you can finish your 104 ! Not that I have nothing against the Bf.108, I find it a neat little aircraft and I've been toying for a while with the idea of buying the eduard kit
kpc7676 Posted October 10, 2012 Author Posted October 10, 2012 Two and a half week to go, can I make it??? Here's hoping, and with this update, things are looking promising. I have painted the yellow on the seat sides and then marked the black lines with a thin pen, it will be hard to see the sides when in the pit anyways so not really too concerned that the lines are not perfect. Next was the fitment of the tanks and the seam clean up. Plenty of cleaning up, but after the first coat of Mr Surfacer yesterday I found that I had done a pretty good job, bar some areas on the fuel tanks and the nose. These have subsequently been fixed and I put the pre shading on this morning with it finished looking like this: And then at lunchtime I put the green on, a number of small Aztec paint cup fulls of paint but I got a great, patchy coverage that I reckon matches the worn look I am after. I then added a touch of white to some more green paint and did a random spray around the entire model, trying to dull it a little bit. I am very happy with the result and it bodes well for me to give a Danish Draken a go one day, as this paint look would suit those aircraft well too. I intend getting the black around the nose sprayed by the weekend, along with the red for the airbrake areas and the black around the intakes. This will then see decals on late in the weekend, and progress accelerating to a finish hopefully by the end of the GB.
Giorgio N Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I'm sure you can make it before the end ! The finish is very nice, on my monitor however the green looks a bit light compared to pictures of the real aircrafts. True that the finish could get very worn and some scale effect helps with these overall single colour finishes.
