seadog
Right it's done and I'm pretty happy with it. The signal halyards could have been finer, but, hey. Thanks for looking. F
Shar2
Excellent. She looks the dogs danglies. For finer halliards and aerials I use GS Hypo glue which is quite stringy and dries fairly hard.

seadog
If the base had been longer...I was trying to show her turning to starboard, so there's more wake to that side...sortafing... Thanks for the comments and what's GS Hypo glue Dave? Cheers, Fraser

Will Vale
Gorgeous ship, plus I think that's the best wake I've seen.
Mike
Looks great GS-Hypo is a watch crystal cement, which is excellent for gluing clear parts down, and as Dave says, can be quite stringy if you pull the applicator away quickly. I'd love to know your technique for the base - it's the main thing (other than time) that puts me off making a few ships.
seadog
Have a look over on the WIP forum, I did the sea using plasicene - a time honoured material and VERY easy to use. painted using artists oils---as a painter I have a good selection hanging around! I spent some time on a coaster operating out of Guernsey back at the end of the 60s and spent a lot of time studying the sea. When you do a seabase try to work from photos of the actual ship at sea. IMHO acrylic gell is amistake, doen't look like any sea I've seen... Thanks again for the nice words all! F
Mike
That's interesting - how does the plasticine stand up to the rigors of time? I know it goes brittle over the years, and would hate to see a bunch of cracks open up in the seascape after all that work
Shar2
Whilst the plastacine method can be good, I prefer using either Das clay or ready mixed tile grout. I also paint, but in acrylics, which work really well on the dried material.
seadog
Bob Wilson, who does immaculate miniature merchantmen, uses plasticine and has been for over thirty years. He reckons he has yet to see cracking. I've seen some old models with plasticine seas, no cracking. Now thready mix lite plaster I recently used to fill some gaps in the previous owner of this house's handiwork, has shrunk. It's hard to know what's best. Acrylic gel looks to me like acrylic gell. I used Das on my Sovremenny's base and it was good but the new batch I just bought is sort of springy and won't take sharp detail. Choose yer poison, I guess. It's as much about the painting anyway.
