DannyB
Chuck us on the list Dave, I'm hoping to get hold of a revell F/A-18E to use the other Tophatters Anniversary scheme from back when I did the F-14.

kpc7676
Would have considered this GB, but with only three months allocated, it's too short a time frame to do a Hornet to a high standard for me (along with other GB's at the same time). All the same, will be watching with interest, best of luck guys. Edited March 28, 2013 by kpc7676
Tim T
I'm in. I have the Italeri Growler kit with the updated moulds. Eduard are about to release photo etch sets as well. I'm tempted to do the Vikings Centennial scheme.

Romeo Alpha Yankee
I have a 1/72 Hasegawa/Minicraft F/A-18A to build as a prototype. That will be a certain build. Also have other variants like a Hasegawa F/A-18F in RAAF markings that I would like to finish by the end of the year. So sign me up! Edit: I notice Tim ( theplasticsurgeon) is listed twice in you participant list.

Gajman
... or failing that, the Hobbyboss Hornet ... Apologies for the shameless plug, if you're talking 1/48 scale HobbyBoss Hornets I just happen to have some on sale in my stash sell off thread (a lot cheaper than at the shops too), also some Revell hornets for 1/72 fans. And while I'm here, can I sign up for this? I'd love to get one of my 1/32 Hornets built. Gary Edited April 9, 2013 by Gajman

Neal
Not sure I'll have the time to join in yet but just been looking into the 1:144 options. Having just seen Dazzio's WIP with the F/A-18C from revell this looks like a cracking kit, but I'm not keen on the paint scheme. I've also found some RAAF decals which I like the look of, this issue I have is RAAF fly A's not C's, a bit of research and I think the only difference between the two varients seems to be internal so the revell C should be ok, what's the opinion of the Hornet experts? PS does the same apply to the B & D? Edited April 12, 2013 by Neal
DaveJL
The tail is different...all you have to do is chop off the middle radar warning receiver on each of the tail fins. Some A models have the 'bird slicers' in front of the canopy, some don't, you'd just need to check your references. I think the pylons are slightly different too, but that is not a major issue. charley420
Don't forget the a's had L shaped stiffener brackets at the base of the tail, these were incorporated inside the later variants tails.

Dave Dave, thanks for that, all seems do-able, just need to look into ordering the parts and a kit now. Don't forget the a's had L shaped stiffener brackets at the base of the tail, these were incorporated inside the later variants tails. Thanks for that, I'll look at some pics and see if they can be added although I think you're over estimating what I'm capable of in this scale. Dazzio
The main difference I could find was to do with the fin stakes on the LERX and the "bird-slicer" attenna. But that's really a moot point depending on the block the aircraft was. Think most of them have been updated now. Also the A model couldn't carry the AMRAAM. Think the same is true of the B/D models, I know that the C and Ds also had upgraded EW kit, might explain why the Wild Weasle was a D model?? With the F-18C model, there is a cag scheme too. Which isn't too bad, can't remember what the other one was for the D model of the top of my head. Kind Regards, Dazz Edit : scrap that... My phone is playing silly buggers with me today. Ignore my reply... Edited April 13, 2013 by Dazzio
Neal
Thanks for the expert opinion all. Seeing as I've now got a 1:144 revell 'D and a RAAF decal set winging their way to me I suppose I'm in. Now do I order the retrowings cockpit and control surfaces. . . . .

Romeo Alpha Yankee
Just to clarify RAAF As and Bs got the LEX fence early on (around the early 90s) and the bird slicer antenna in the last update a few years ago. Also RAAF aircraft have been modified to fire ASRAAMs and AMRAAMs. The last AIM9Ls the RAAF had were gotten rid of in a live fire exercise not long ago. Here is a nice shot showing the current config with a few missiles loaded (RAAF Photo) and it shows the fin stiffeners mentioned earlier.
Enzo the Magnificent
Has the closing date for this GB passed ? Nope. The GB hasn't started yet. There is no closing date for entries. Just drop in and get started on your kit. No earlier than 1 June of course.
Enzo the Magnificent
My entry will be an F/A-18D of VMF(AW)-225 "Bengals". I originally intended to use the MAW decal sheet for this, but it turns out that the Academy kit has the same decals. Seems a little pointless breaking into a perfectly good decal sheet if there is no need to, so I'll use the kit decals. That should make it pretty much an OOB build. Where did you get the decals from Neal? Kind Regards Dazz I've seen the crew set and they do look quite tempting. The decals are Novascale, which I believe are Aussie decals sold through the novascale eBay shop, I did see a small number of comments about poor quality in 1:32 but also some really positive ones as well, so I'll wait and see. I think the decals are ALPS printed so I need to do some research to find the best way to handle them.
