MPM METEORS

I'd be grateful for thoughts on the range of 1/72 MPM Meteors. I gather that the Xtrakit F8/Airfix F8 are in fact the MPM kit?

Thanks,

John

Yes they are nice kits. A bit of care when fitting the intakes and exhaust nozzles is about it for filler required, undercarriage placement and strength is a bit weak but workable. Lots of additional colour schemes available means you could build a whole fleet of them too.

They're nice enough kits, though they seem to have problems with canopy proportions. The Mk 8/9 is the worst offender, with canopies much too big and bulbous, missing the distinctive 'flange' framing and rearward taper in plan view. Wingtips are too thick, but are easier to fix than the canopy.

can't judge on the accuracy, but they do look nice when completed. Fitting problems already mentionned, nice surface detail. Trailing edge definetly needs some sanding to look thin enough. Not sure about the decals, but the Xtrakit F-8 has excellent decals, one of the best I ever used. Very thin, but hard to move. So, take care to position them right on the first attempt. Oh, an don't forget to put enough weight in the nose to avoid a tailsitter...

just to show the thickness issue - one side is sanded thinner, the other left original:

I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks the canopy's are over-blown! I doubt whether Aeroclub vac-form replacements are that available nowadays, though I think I may have a few stashed away.

Another issue I have with the kit is the undercarriage - I find it fiddly and the mud guards too remote from the wheels. Thin the wings down from the inside with a file and the nacelle fronts shiuld fit better, First one I built I didn't and I had to use a lot of milliput to fair the intake rim into the nacelle.

I know that this all sounds a bit negative, but at the end of the day they are nice kits - just a bit 'limited run' in their nature.

Top tip Bill, thanks for that as that was the main problem I had with the kit and it took me ages to sort.
