splinter
Continued from previous post... Again, this is a game of give and take: slats & flaperons, pylons and main undercarriage doors... While rear main undercarriage doors have no influence on the above mentioned trio, front doors were first test fitted with Pattafix, later with wire. I also scratchbuild actuators for front main undercarriage doors. I couldn't do it for rear doors, as there is a misalignment with resin wheelbays. I still need to check if this is my mistake or mistake made by Olimp Resin Accessories. Just for the record: real Su-34 slats are almost touching front covers!http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx57/supergru/Su34/_DSC1232.jpg This is my version: Still not finished for today...

splinter
Here are all control surfaces on... I forgot canards! Finally, some airbrush action! MM stainless steel metalizer... Primer on horizontals, slats, flaperons, wheelbay covers... H-31 got MM metalizer stainless steel and Hark Ghost Grey. APU-73 pylons for R-73 missiles also got Dark Ghost Grey, as well as other pylons and APK-9 pod. Still more to come ...
splinter
Eventually I took ICM Sorbcya pods... I brushed Revell 371 on both ends, as well as on leading edge on canards, slats and verticals... This paint proved wrong in the end: I need darker shade, more like light ghost grey. Nose and vertical stabs fin got Dark Ghost Grey, which is spot on, in my opinion. Fuselage also got spray primer (decanted) Primer was brushed only on critical places on underside (pencil, white epoxy, rescribed panels, resin...) splinter
Nitro was useless for AKAN paints... I had to learn it hard way... Alcohol was useful on the other hand... Later a fellow modeler suggested to use votka to thin AKAN paint. It make some sense, doesn't it? Some masking... And way we go... OK... I still need to repair 2nd paint on fuselage, and some touch ups will follow.... After that 3rd paint on fuselage...
splinter
Back to base ... I played with MIG Productions & AK Interactive washes, pigments and Tamiya weathering sets... F-106A has same size as Su-34 and was used as testbed. For final stage, I coated the base with MM Dullcote and added some fresh oil stains... That's all for this year! I hope to finish it in 2014. Right now I have APA-5D in 1:35 scale on my desk (new Trumpeter URAL 4320 + HAD models conversion + scratch)... But that's another story... Now it's your turn to comment... splinter
Oh boy! 8 months after last update! 30 000+ visitors and counting... I was busy with APA-5D lately. You can find it here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234961433-ural-apa-5d-airfield-starter-135/ But now I'm back... During local modeling cup I found OFAB-100 bombs, and found them very suitable for my Su-34 project. This is why I removed H-31 missiles from weapon's choice. I had in mind to use MLUs which I got with Olimp resin set but when I came home I found that those MLUs are for 250kg-class bombs. Anyway, I also bought Zvezda's Su-24 in 1/72 scale (prepack from Dragon). I took it mainly because of PTB-3000 tanks inside, which I attend to use for future Su-34 projects. And what a surprise was there in the box! Two "F" sprues from Dragon's Soviet Modern Weapons Set 3, meaning I got AT-16, FAB-100 M62, FAB-250 M62, FAB-250 M46, UB-16/57, UB-32, B-8.... And most important ... MBDZ-U6 launchers... I immediately started with upgrading. First I took upper adapter from Italeri's part no. 52B for bombs. And scratched these "H" form adapters from 0.25 mm styrene Here is the real thing... http://i741.photobucket.com/albums/xx57/supergru/Su34/amc48010photo_2.jpg Dryfit on the wings. As you may notice, it's quite tricky to fit them, because of flaps and slats. More to come in a few minutes...
splinter
I ordered stencils for Su-24 family. Not only because of Su-24, but also for PTB-3000 tank and OFAB-100 bombs. I can only recommend this set, as the print is very fine - you can almost read the letters in 1/72 scale and the foil is very thin. And this is Su-34 with AKAN paints. Don't glory this, because the paint is already stripped off. But more about this in the evening. Stay tuned !!!

splinter
Yes, you are correct - darkest color is too dark. Maybe I will also need to light the medium color, as well. But, there are several more reasons to strip the paint. Light shade of grey (on leading edges) is too light - it should be darker... Then... With removing masking tape after a few months I also damaged paint underneath it. ... There few also 1-2 places with underpaint (not enough paint).... For two panel I missed colors - one was painted with the paint attended for another panel... Canopy was also damaged and masking tape left some glue on it... etc... One more reason was this... When I removed masking tape from the canopy I noticed that HUD was crushed by canopy, when I was glueing canopy with the fuselage, long time ago. Remember that there was masking tape first, so I couldn't notice this before. So I had to remove canopy anyway and lower the HUD for 1-2 mm... This old canopy will be sanded from inside to strip all paint and to smooth damaged area. Then I will dip it into Future and use it for some future Su-34 project. Here is fuselage with paint removed and still with old canopy. You can notice all new panel lines, which I scribed for days on upper fuselage and wings. Here are control surfaces (flaps, slats, vertical and horizontal tail, canards... ) after treatment with Mr. Muscolo oven foam: some parts are damages beyond repair! I will have to make new ones. I also noticed that Miliput shrunk (again) on lower right wing in the area of Italeri's original panel lines and on the joint between intakes and engine nacelles. I will need to fix this with Mr Surfacer 500. Now for some good news ... I combined sets for Su-24 and Su-27 stencils for various launchers, adapters and weapon systems. These are Su-27 sheets taking a sunbath for a few days... Difference is obvious... I started with OFAB-100 bombs (16 x 4 stencils, 4 bombs for reserve) H-29L missiles (2 x 30 stencils) H-59 missile (1 x 37 stencils !!!) R-77 (1 x 9 stencils) APK-9 (1 x 4 stencils) AKU-58 (5 x 2 stencils, 2 launchers are for reserve) BDZ-USK (1 x 2 stencils, for KAB-1500L) Despite the variety, I'm not quite happy with the quantity - for example there are two sets for APU-73 launchers, which are common on every Flanker. Same quantity is for R-77 and APU-170, which is not yet in operational service. There are also some small mistakes and confusions on Begemot sheet for Su-27: keep an eye when using this sheet! While waiting for new Su-27 stencil set to have a sunbath, I modified original APU-73 launchers from ICM: small piece of 1.5 mm styrene and one hour later you get a miracle! Upper pair is modified ICM launcher, lower pair is original ICM. This is APU-170 for R-77 (2 x 2 stencils, one will be placed in reserve) There are a few more shots for today ... splinter
To paint the tip of R-73 missile I mixed color on flat surface and just dipped the tip. DIY vertical dryer R-73 (2 x 19 stencils) PTB-3000 fuel tank, for future Su-34 #2 - still missing stencils. Right main undercarriage leg: painted and with stencils from Authentic Decals set. Next is wash and matting. Same for front leg. Front main undercarriage covers: inner side with diluted MiG Dark Brown Wash, outer side with stencils only. Rear main undercarriage covers: diluted wash on inner side. No stencils to be placed here. Front cover for front undercarriage leg with wash only. No stencils to be placed here. Ladders and mudguard: painted and with wash. No stencils to be placed here. Rims, painted and with wash. I just noticed that I missed white on inner ring, where are cooling holes. MBDZ-U6, painted and with wash. No stencils to be placed here. Adapters for MBDZ-U6: painted and with wash. That's all from me... Looking forward for your comments...

splinter
For today I will start with gun housing: I removed PE from Olimp for good. Still some work to do after second filling and sanding cycle. I also built new set of North Star nozzles. I was not happy with first set, because I want to have them more opened, as if engine is shut off. Here is one new compared to the old one. This time I painted nozzles in different way from inside: First a layer of Alclad 2 Jet Exhaust, then AKAN enamels for some "ashy" look and finally some Alclad 2 Klear Kote Flat. Here is compared with the old one. From outside it's same as last time: HUmbrol Gun Metal + Tamiya weathering Light Gun Metal, Burnt Blue and Burnt Red. It's very heard to show you the "depth" of North Star Nozzles... Calculate that 3 cm in 1/72 scale are around 2 m in real! There is not much of wash to be seen on R-77, but on R-73 and H-29L it's different situation. Some finished parts.
splinter
Legs are also finished - front leg has 63 parts - with mudguard, ladders, wheels, glycerol tank,... Main legs are 2 x 25 parts. To rebuild vertical tails, I stretched some clear foil in the oven on 200 deg C. I needed it to fill this gap. After hour and half it looked like this. Some assembly photos for the end of today's update.
JOCKNEY
I have the Revell version of this aircraft, and I naively thought it could be build out of the box. Going by all the previous work, how wrong could I be ! Love the colour scheme, can I ask what the humbrol paint colours would be, that's what's available in the Scottish Highlands ? Cheers Pat
Ticketec
Wow, Absolutely amazing build, especially when you consider that it is in 1/72! Great job so far, and looking forward to more updates. Thanks dave
splinter
Guys, thank you for your support! @JOCKNEY: Tamiya, Revell, Zvezda... They all are reboxes from Italeri mold. I remember there were a few more companies, but I don't know what they sell inside their boxes. I built one Italeri Su-34 OOB some 20 years ago - at that time it was fun, today I want more accurate model for sure. As you can see, with all the aftermarket in the world I still have a lot to scratchbuild in 1/72 scale. I have only AKAN paints for this camo, but I can give you FS numbers from Authentic Decals instructions: from darkest to lightest it's 35125, 35187, 35200 and 36293 for grey nose. Please, don't take them as granted - test them first on a piece of plastic first. I have a few more Su-34s in my stash, so stay tuned.
Amen
Exhausts are great! Yes zvezda and revell are italeri reboxes. But zvezda is marked with new parts. Here you can see the timeline http://www.scalemates.com/products/product.php?id=105591
splinter
@Amen: Thank you for support. I have Zvezda kit in stash - there are no new parts! In fact original Italeri sprue markings "059-A" and "059-B" are well preserved. It's just a rebox. Even this Italeri's new edition has same decals as original. @JOCKNEY: While checking Zvezda's kit, I noticed that Zvezda also gives Humbrol paint numbers. Please check them if they are correct. Use upper (top) drawing for tri-color camouflage, as for bort "45" shown on Le Bourget.
