Modelers enthusiastically received the brand new Westland WS-61 Sea King HC.4 troop-carrying variant, and that Cyber-Hobby item proved an instant hit. This second kit depicts the rare airborne early warning AEW.2 helicopter. Combat in the Falklands War revealed an AEW gap in the capability of the Royal Navy (RN), and even while the conflict was under way, Westland began converting two Sea King HAS.2 helicopters in May 1982. After the crash development program, these two helicopters joined the replacement task force when it set sail in August although they were too late to participate in the actual fighting. The AEW.2s featured a Thorn-EMI ARI 5930/3 Searchwater radar mounted in an inflatable radome fitted to a swivel arm. This new helicopter in 1/72 scale makes use of elements of the Cyber-Hobby HC.4, but it features a number of newly tooled parts in order to portray the AEW.2 version. One obvious example is the radar radome. The plastic model is well designed and cleverly engineered to induce maximum modeling enjoyment. The fuselage is correctly proportioned and the foldable rotor blades are made to true scale thickness too. With appropriate decal markings from Cartograf, this Sea King AEW.2 is ready to search for the approach of the enemy! SkippyBing
Is it just me or can they not count? I'm thinking of the tail rotors...
Harry Lime
Is it just me or can they not count? I'm thinking of the tail rotors... Nope, they can't count! That realistic 5 blade tail rotor is so good it comes with 6 blades!!! Which it should do anyway as no Mk.2 ever had a 5 blade tail rotor. Mark. heloman1
Looks like another box of Dragon poo, maybe we should bombard them with pics of the real item and then ask what they plan in the future and offer our help! Maybe we should call upon St George, the Dragon slayer? I had a look at the folded blade option on the Commando, it looks very poorly executed almost 'can't be bothered with this bit, I'll fudge it'! When the market is crying out for quiality products there still seems to be some companies who can't/won't, don't want to get it right.
Harry Lime
Colin, Couldn't agree with you more! Why waste time on this kit when you can source a Revell kit on Ebay for much less. Or even cross kit the current Revell boxing with the Airfix kit, which'll still come in for less than the Dragon kit AND it'll be much more accurate.... Mark. Seahawk
Colin,Couldn't agree with you more! Why waste time on this kit when you can source a Revell kit on Ebay for much less. Or even cross kit the current Revell boxing with the Airfix kit, which'll still come in for less than the Dragon kit AND it'll be much more accurate.... Quite agree. And, given that this is a kit at a premium (if not plain ridiculous) price, you'd expect it to come with a deflated radome option which will be required for the 95% of models that will be built posed on the ground: it doesn't seem to. BTW there's a noticeable difference in diameter between the Airfix and Revell AEW radomes (Airfix larger). Not sure I ever heard which one was more accurate but I always assumed it was the Revell one. Is there anyone on this board who has access to measure the diameter of the real thing?
