Robert Stuart Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 (edited) See if I can do a build I'm not convinced about the kit decals - I have a nagging suspicion they are for an IL2-M Reference: This book has been around for a while, and while it does contain colour profiles, current thinking suggests they would support revision After Market stuff... I also have some Moskit exhausts, and, on order (I hope), a new spinner. Apart from these, and a change of colour scheme, the build should be OOB Edited July 2, 2012 by Robert Stuart

Robert Stuart Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 A slow start - but I have started separating componets for painting - the first thing was the fuel tank The fuselage is dry fitted.
smuts Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Hi, good to see the Flying tanks here, & AM's kit is still very good too.. Andy.
Robert Stuart Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 Just found a restored IL2 mentioned on Mission4Today http://www.mission4today.com/index.php?nam...=15&start=0 This includes photos on Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/fight2flyphot...in/photostream/
Robert Stuart Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 Started painting the insides, and building the pit - needs tidying up the camera shows too many faults The obvious omission is the seat straps - AM supplied a decal, I think I'll use Tamiya tape Not seen here, I've assembled the oil cooler under the center section. The instructions suggest dropping the cooler from above, I found it easier to push it in from the rear With the elevator actuator (push-pull rod, pt 84) in place, i think it's going to be easier to dry assemble the starboard fuselage, then glue the halves, before finally fixing to the lower wing
CliffB Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Nice to see this one progressing Robert - there's a lot going on in that cockpit Cheers Cliff
pabbi Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Nice to see another Flying tank build, looking forward to follow your build
Learstang Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 (edited) How did I miss this build? Robert, the interior colour you used looks good. Despite the availability of the very nice Tamiya kit, the AM kit is still a good one, and worthy of attention (for one thing they got the ejection ports under the wings correct, which Tamiya, like every other manufacturer has managed to botch - the square port above the longish port should always point to the port wingtip, and not be mirror images of each other). Glad to hear you're getting a new spinner, as that's the most inaccurate part of the AM kit (it's much too rounded). I shall be watching this build with interest! Troy Smith Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Not seen here, I've assembled the oil cooler under the center section. The instructions suggest dropping the cooler from above, I found it easier to push it in from the rearWith the elevator actuator (push-pull rod, pt 84) in place, i think it's going to be easier to dry assemble the starboard fuselage, then glue the halves, before finally fixing to the lower wing HI Robert If it's not too late, please have a read here, http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=62552 It seems there is a trick to getting the AM kit together, which is quoted and linked in this thread. specifically The next day I began the assembly of the sub-assemblies, and discovered that following the instructions was not as painless as expected. The cockpit assembly, glued the night before to the lower center wing section as instructed, fits tightly: get everything in position and don't be afraid to give a little push - it will click into position. Still following instructions, glue the engine cowling subassembly to the main fuselage. Now the wings...At this point, if you have glued the upper and lower outer wings together per the instructions, you will experience major difficulty with the tight fit. No matter how hard I tried, I could not get the left wing to fit into position without leaving a 1/32" gap in the attachment area of the wing fillet. The right wing was also hard to get into position, but it did go without the gap. Putty and a file solved the problem, but it shouldn't be required. My solution is: before the fuselage halves are glued together, set in the upper wing to its mating position and glue it there. Let it dry overnight with the rest of the subassemblies. Then snap in the cockpit and mate the lower center wing section to the inner upper wings and glue them together. Attach the cowling and fit it onto the section of upper wing that touches it. This will aid alignment of the cowling to the fuselage. Finally, attach the lower outer wing sections. It will fit like a dream (I tried this with a kit a friend bought). Lots of detail info and great modelling in this thread by Dr.jellyfingers/Si. Well worth a read, if for nothing more than picking some 'left field' modelling tips up off Si. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...4916467&hl= hope of use. cheers T
Robert Stuart Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) How did I miss this build? Robert, the interior colour you used looks good.{snip}Regards, Jason Thanks Learstang, Jason, given your interest in the type, I was thinking of sending you a PM The interior colour is Humbrol 140, suggested by John Thompson (here: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...&p=1076866) I'm still waiting for that spinner (I also ordered an engine for a U-2/Po-2 ... wonder if I could sneak one of those into this GB?) , and thinking about exterior paint. When I come to that, there's a swept wing IL2 on your web-site (bort 28) that looks interesting (http://www.learstang.com/P.13IL2ColourProfile - is this one of Massimo Tessitori's illustrations?). I'm also thinking of this one ... ... if I can work out which template to use - and guess the spinner colour. (I'm thinking green with a red tip) HI RobertIf it's not too late, please have a read here {snip} hope of use. cheers T Thanks Troy, you caught me in time the fuselage is still dry fitted since I still have to tidy up the 'pit. {edit}Maybe not no 12 - I see it's an option in the Tamiya box{/edit} Edited July 18, 2012 by Robert Stuart
Learstang Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) You're welcome, Robert! I'm glad you used the interior colour suggested by John Thompson; John knows his VVS "stuff" (Troy does also, for that matter - we're all proud members of the sovietwarplanes.com site, Massimo Tessitori's site). Bort 28 was done by Massimo, who is doing all the profiles for my (hopefully) soon-to-be released book. Massimo only works from photographs (not other people's interpretations, as unfortunately so often happens with other illustrators), so it should be accurate. You're correct about White 12 being in the Tamiya kit. Regards, Jason Edited July 18, 2012 by Learstang
Prop Duster Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 looks to me your doing a great job on this kit; may have to re think my ideas about not doing* VVS aircraft *no real reason except for the ton of US stuff, I already have in the stash
Robert Stuart Posted July 28, 2012 Author Posted July 28, 2012 (edited) The new prop arrived last week, and today I hear that the paint has been shipped Progress of sorts ... I spilt some grey paint on the starboard tail-plane - I spotted a thread in WIP suggesting oven cleaner may cure that Clearly, I need to start smoothying and filling a few joints. The wheel wells will be added after the lower wing tips - I envisage a need to clean up, and maybe add some filler. Edited July 28, 2012 by Robert Stuart
Learstang Posted July 28, 2012 Posted July 28, 2012 Looks to me like quite a bit of progress, Robert. It'll be nice to see her painted up. Regards, Jason
