Bertie McBoatface Posted June 28, 2012 Posted June 28, 2012 Looking forward to build this one (streight out of box ) Excellent! Do you have it yet? I don't think it's available in UK right now.
pabbi Posted June 28, 2012 Author Posted June 28, 2012 dont have it now, but it is on the way from............ Hong Kong
Radleigh Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Really like the look of this kit! Good luck with the build, Subscribing!
MadScientist Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Looks like it will be a good build, Tamiya always builds great kits form my experience with them, also love how their instructions include a lot of extra info. Will be watching this build!
SaintsPhil Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Glad you've chosen this one, great subject and should be an awesome kit Phil
Chris Jephcott Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Now I will be following this one really really closely. Looking forward to seeing this develop!
pabbi Posted July 17, 2012 Author Posted July 17, 2012 well made a start Main color of cockpit is RLM-Grey. The masking sticker is not pree-cut and is difficult to use (windows behing pilot) I didnt use the seat belt decals because i am going to use the pilot and gunner figur. and.... one upside-down error
Robert Stuart Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Ah, good, another IL2 I'm going to watch with interest
pabbi Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) Sprayed the interior with "black thinner". The cockpit / fuel tank/ gunner was pushed up after joining fuselages. Used a little Tipp-ex to fill joints but not much was needed, everything fits "almost perfectly", you can even hear "snap" sometime when it falls together. Edited July 18, 2012 by pabbi
pabbi Posted July 18, 2012 Author Posted July 18, 2012 Looks great. What's upside down though? thanks Don, upside down - the decals with 6 instruments didnt see it until I looked at the photo
Troy Smith Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 well made a start Main color of cockpit is RLM-Grey. Pabbi what brand of paint are you using? The interior colour is A-14 'Steel grey' I presume Tamiya have specified a 'near match' from their paint range? If you check Robert's build there are links about colours, also he asked about AKAN paint [Russian paint company, thought to be the best VSS paint matches] http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...topic=234922340 which has links to Humbrol matches of VVS colours. The paints specified by Tamiya have breifly been discussed, in this thread http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1330.0 I don't have all the Tamiya paints specified so I can't help. [i bought some AKAN a while back] also some discussion and pictures of the rear gun fitted here http://sovietwarplanes.com/board/index.php?topic=1383.0 There's a lot more info on the Il-2 and other VVS types on the site. I hope this is of some help. cheers T

Thanks T, I am using Tamiya paint, the interior color I use is Tamiya XF-22 RLM-Grey, following the Tamiya instruction.
turnerdad Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 Great start, I'll be watching this. Don't fret over the upside down decal, seriously who would notice (if you hadn't mentioned it!)?
pabbi Posted July 19, 2012 Author Posted July 19, 2012 ready for some paint no problems to report the main landing gear has a great fit, not possible to do them not level, I was going to add them after painting but they need to be on before the "landing gear front cover". the instuction for camouflage paints are xf-23 light blue XF-24 dark green, XF-25 olive green, XF-52 earth with a little XF-59 desert yellow
Robert Stuart Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 (edited) Looking good, you should finish before I have my paint on order Before anybody comments, XF-24 is dark grey grey / green / earth sounds reasonable for an arrow Edited July 19, 2012 by Robert Stuart
Learstang Posted July 19, 2012 Posted July 19, 2012 (edited) Looking good, pabbi! Remember that the "earth" colour is actually a tan colour, not a brown colour, as it appears on the Tamiya box. One thing also; although it may be too late to rectify this, the lever on the round object on the starboard side of the pilot's seat should be resting on the aft spar, next to where the seat is attached. On this kit (and seemingly every other kit) it is too far forward. Another point - the square ejection opening on the underside of the wings underneath the cannon should both be pointing towards the port wingtip (AM got this right so if you have the AM kit, look at how they did it - or take a look at Dr.Jellyfingers' build, which uses the AM kit). The opening on the port wing is on the wrong side of the long rectangular opening, which is for the shell casing ejector chute. I hope this makes sense. I really need to do a thread discussing the pros and cons of this kit (definitely mostly pros - this is the best kit of the Shturmovik that anyone has produced so far). Regards, Jason Edited July 19, 2012 by Learstang
pabbi Posted July 20, 2012 Author Posted July 20, 2012 (edited) thanks Jason, yes the earth color looks diffrent then on he Tamiya box. camouflage paint is on, tried to paintchip with salt on the walking path, maby it is too much chiping ? I pre shaded with nato-black. Edited July 20, 2012 by pabbi
Learstang Posted July 20, 2012 Posted July 20, 2012 That looks very good, pabbi! It's hard to overdo the paint chipping on the port wingroot; they were often very worn down. What you've done looks realistic. Regards, Jason
smuts Posted July 21, 2012 Posted July 21, 2012 what an impressive job,& the wing root looks just right too. Andy.
pabbi Posted July 21, 2012 Author Posted July 21, 2012 (edited) ready for klear and decals I will do the antenna last.... Edited July 21, 2012 by pabbi
