Airbase moving to Newquay

So what happens to the Nimrod then?

I'm always interested in what happens to the staff when things like this happens, do they all move or does the company start again?

It would be relatively simple to dismantle the Nimrod and take it down to Cornwall by road. Simple, but not easy, as my RE teacher was fond of saying. But it's been done before. An alternative would be to repeat the process used for transporting Nimrods to BAe for MR.Mk.4 conversion: dismantle them, and feed the bits into an An-124. That would make a lot of janner spotters very happy, methinks.

Plus - and not looking to start a fight here - 'twould be nice to have a Nimrod back down where it belongs. I can live with not getting a second Shackleton if there's a Nimrod to see as I drive past.

Very interesting this, and as an ex-St.Mawgan-er it's great to see the airfield getting some extra business. If only I lived a little bit closer, I'd be up there volunteering with them at the drop of a hat!

Read on other forums the Shack and Nimrod are staying at Coventry as they are property of the SPT? I'm sure Rich knows more?

Radleigh, You're correct about Shackleton WR963 and she is staying at Coventry. We don't have anything to do with the Nimrod, and we don't own it - however I am told by those that do it will also stay, despite the mention in the BBC Cornwall report.

Helston to St Mawgan a long way?

Not when I was on RAFSKTU at HMS Seahawk, St Mawgan was our parent unit

I don't think the RAF take distance into account when assigning a 'parent unit', my relief on Invincible was an RAF exchange officer (it was her real job, I was doing it as a hold between training courses!) her parent unit for no obvious reason was Brize Norton, the ship was based in Portsmouth and promptly went to the US East Coast!

I used to do it every day when I was in Newquay quarters. My parenting is shared between St Mawgan and Benson, but we are about to move house from Helston to Marazion so it's a bit more of a trek. Don't get me wrong, I'll still do my best to get up there when possible!

When Rich posted on Retrorides about 963 there were lots of similar posts which is how I got involved, seeing as I am very local. 30 miles is not far, I commute that far every day as I'm sure many others around here do. Most of our voluteers come from Birmingham which is 15-25 miles depending on where abouts in Brum they are, we have other regulars from London and Bristol and Rich travels rougly 100 miles each way to Coventry almost every weekend.

What is moving and when is still all a bit mysterious because those in the upstairs offices appear to be firm believers in the mushroom theory of management, especially where volunteers are concerned.

Good move.

Coventry, midlands, millions of people within a 100 mile radius.

Newquay, ar$e end of nowhere, some sheep.

Not exactly what you would call along term future.

Dumba$$!

and also what fatbaldbloke said.

Yeah, because no one ever visits Cornwall and looks for things to do. Which does beg the question what the millions of out of county cars are doing blocking the roads every summer when I go and visit my parents...

You surely don't believe they've just said "oh, sod it, I don't like the view out of the office window, and we're making too much money - let's bugger off somewhere obscure instead"? There must be a bit more to it than that.

It is a pity that the Nimrod is not moving to St Mawgan as that would be a really fitting home. I remember seeing them flying out of St Mawgan during the 80`s when we did summer adventure training further up the coast at Penhale Camp near Holywell Bay.

Cheers

i think im one of the few thats quite excited by this move...mind you St mawgan is only down the road. Shame the Grimrod and Shack arent coming 'home' but at least theres a Shack already there on the gate...oh and the canberras are cause for MUCH excitement!!

Steve

(who also remembers Nimrods, Canberra TT18s and Shackletons when they lived there)

ps..also remembers Penhale Camp well...'go down this road till you get to the a**e end of nowhere...then go another 5 miles and there you are' :)

The BBC article says

The planes being moved to Newquay include a Gloster Meteor, De Havilland's Vampire and Venom, light transport plane the Percival Pembroke and a Nimrod.

So why the debate about the Nimrod not moving???

see post #13

Given that RichW is at Coventry every weekend looking after the growler, I'd trust his insight over a BBC reporter who probably has no previous knowledge of Airbase even existing
