DaveJL Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 Quick question...as i've never used Scale Aircraft Conversions metal landing gear before, do the parts need a wash before priming or are they ok to paint without primer? Thanks Dave
Dads203 Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Quick question...as i've never used Scale Aircraft Conversions metal landing gear before, do the parts need a wash before priming or are they ok to paint without primer? Thanks Dave Personally i'd wash them, treat them the same as any other moulding Dave, they will have some form of A release agent on them that needs removing. Regards Dan

Bertie McBoatface Posted August 2, 2012 Posted August 2, 2012 Personally I'd give them a scrub with airbrush cleaner and a toothbrush. Outside!
DaveJL Posted August 2, 2012 Author Posted August 2, 2012 Personally I'd give them a scrub with airbrush cleaner and a toothbrush. Outside! Hmm, i was going to bath them in warm detergent with the resin burner cans. I'll try that first Dave
DaveJL Posted August 5, 2012 Author Posted August 5, 2012 Another good session today. I sprayed the scratch-built CWM yesterday: The GBU-38's painted, weathered and ready to go: Installed: CWM inside Bomb-bay number 3: All 3 bomb-bays attached to the lower fuselage: Size comparison: While that was drying, I returned to the cockpit section. Firstly, I masked off all the windows. Next, added the Structural Mode Control System (SMCS) vanes. These are designed to smooth the ride of the B-1 at low level. Next, i used some scrap etch to make the vent as seen on the cabin roof. I also added a lump of putty, flattened and rounded with a finger, to create the GPS receiver. The latter just needs a bit of a sand to smooth it off: Added the 3 Eduard vents on the underside: Then I moved on and attached the 6 Pitot tubes either side of the nose: Once this was done, I returned to the main fuselage and attached the upper and lower sections together (I'm leaving the wings off until the end, despite the instructions calling out that they be installed before closing the fuselage) The fit is not great and some serious sanding will be needed: That's all for today. It's starting to come together! Next up is to clean up the fuselage and finish work on the tail section. More to come. Dave
Chris W. Balmer Posted August 5, 2012 Posted August 5, 2012 Its looking really good mate... and getting BIGGER!
DaveJL Posted August 5, 2012 Author Posted August 5, 2012 Its looking really good mate... and getting BIGGER! Thanks mate. And yes, it is getting bigger! Starting to scare me sightly Dave
DaveJL Posted August 6, 2012 Author Posted August 6, 2012 Had a look today at the glued together fuselage....oh dear I said to myself. There's a massive step on either side of the forward section that joins to the cockpit. Going to be a lot of fun to sort that out. Anyone got any good tips for removing big 'steps'? Cheers Dave

DaveJL Posted August 7, 2012 Author Posted August 7, 2012 Found a good video this evening, have a look!
DaveJL Posted August 8, 2012 Author Posted August 8, 2012 BIG update today (literally...read on!!) First thing I did today was add the Shull24 SNIPER pod pylon to the forward fuselage: Next, i sanded off the filler that was needed on the join lines between the two fuselage halves. Two applications were needed and there was a lot of work needed to smooth the areas off. I'm relatively happy with the outcome. I also started to tidy up the engine nacelles in preparation for the addition of the CE nozzles. Again, a s*** load of filler and sanding was needed. Smooth side: Not so smooth side: And that's just one! Also tidied up most of the tail section, but the DAS blister still looks like a dogs dinner. (Any tips on how to get this looking right would be most welcome!) Finally, the BIG update today....the main fuselage was attached to the cockpit section. To give an idea of size.... Yep, that's two 1/48 F-14's!!! The join of the two sections is awful in truth so my next job is to clean that up and hopefully sort out the mess I've made of the DAS blister and get the tail section attached. More to follow. Dave
DaveJL Posted August 9, 2012 Author Posted August 9, 2012 Another bit of progress to report. Firstly, I added the 22 vortex generators on the tail: 18 of these came from the Eduard set. The rest were made from bits of card. Made a slightly better attempt at the DAS blister. Still not 100% accurate, but it's the best I can do! Filled the considerable gaps in the forward/main fuselage join. I can already tell that this is going to be a bugger!! Also added some of the Eduard antennae to the top fuselage. Slightly regret this now as I know it will break off at least once Another big milestone was also reached....the tail section was attached to the fuselage. So I now have a full length Bone! Was so big, i had to leave my workbench/utility room and use the dining table! Will let it all dry until the weekend. My next task is to tidy up the join sections and begin work on the engine nacelles. More to come. Dave
Greased Lightning Posted August 9, 2012 Posted August 9, 2012 Fair play to you tackling this monster Dave, any idea where you'll put it once built???
