The Re8 reproduction flying at Masterton is one of my favourites, and it is wonderful to see such effort being put into this kit. I've seen it in the shops and been tempted but unsure what was inside. If only they made new moulds...based on your build! I look forward to further updates when you can. What is the source of the drawing you are working to?The drawing is that in the old Harleyford 'Reconnaissance and Bomber Aircraft,1914-1918'. Since this build began as an entry in a 'vintage kit' group build, I decided to rely on a drawing which was also vintage, and in circulation when the kit came out. If anyone had tried to correct this kit when it came out, this drawing was about all there was available. Starting to look something like an aeroplane now.... The interplane struts are scratched, from 2mm x 0.75mm strip. The kit pieces are 28mm long; the drawing indicates 23mm is the proper length. The upper wing is a hair off-center to port at this point,and the weight of the piece exaggerates its dihedral. Both things will be corrected with attachment of the cabane struts (there is a good deal of flex in the thing at this point). I do not know what the odd marking on the fin is; enlarging the photograph of the machine, it appears to be lettering in a foreign alphabet, possibly Greek or Arabic. It seems so fitted to the shape of the fin that I do not think it was repeated on the other side. I did my best to duplicate it in pencil on a template taken from the fin piece, and wife converted it into white on red-brown, printed on white Testor's decal film. Once applied, I painted over the color portion of the film. Here is a picture of the next batch of decals wife has laid out and printed out on white film.... Those at the top are for a Nieuport Scout that is pretty much complete except for its rudder, the others are for the R.E. 8 C5108. I wait at least five days before spraying on the sealer. I decided to pile straight on in to the cabanes here, rather than put off the tricky bit. I did the front cabanes first, and getting them to a proper length was a bit fiddly. I took the initial measurement from the model, then added a bit. Once I had things seeming right, I did not wait to paint. With the center section raised up, the dihedral angle comes right for both wings. I then went ahead and did the undercarriage (the kit pieces are not worth salvaging). First I made the cross-piece, then assembled the legs to it. Having the undercarriage on is necessary for the rigging. I am going to go ahead and rig before adding the rudder and the fuselage serial decal --- the rudder attachment will be fragile, and it is best to minimize touching the home-made decals even after they are applied. Upper (king-post) bracings and drift wires are left, as are control runs. Next step will be wheels and tail skid, and finishing up the engine and exhausts.... I do a lot of rigging; I can still count on one hand the number of cantilever monoplanes I have done, as a grown man anyway. I use EZ-Line elastic, mostly, applying each line individually. For short runs, often including control wires, and cabane lines that are hard to get at, I use very thin (0.004") brass wire colored black. I have on occasion used 0.01" styrene rod, and slightly thinner beading wire for very heavy cable bracings on some 'Golden Age' machines, and am thinking of adding knitting-in elastic to the armory. Old Man Posted July 8, 2013 Author Share Posted July 8, 2013 More progress on this, my friends. Engine works and landing gear complete, and rudder on, tail-skid too.... It was possible to use the kit wheels and exhaust stacks, with a little alteration (wheels got some 'facetting' and axle caps and air valve holes, exhausts had the upper portion flattened a bit and opened up, and their lower portion lengthened a little). The cooling plates on the motor are individually applied bits on quarter millimeter strip 2mm wide and a hair over 3mm long, bent to a curve. Next step will be control elements (aileron struts, various horns and actuators, and a lot of fine wire...).... Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Old Man, I wish you hadn't. I have just started an RE9, which I thought would be a simple mod to the Airfix RE8, by changing the wings. Now I'm not going to be satisfied unless I copy what you have done to correct the fuselage. But thanks for explaining everything so well.
