ZM 1:32 Skyraider

Recommended Posts

Almost...

Not too sure if it's worked as well as I hoped - but it's got my 5 year old son's seal of approval this morning (though he does think the wheels look a little rough! smile.png)

Just the gear doors, nav lights, canopy rail, seat, static wicks and some oil staining to do - hopefully later today - off to the RAF Museum @ Hendon with Cameron shortly.

This is where we're at as of this am:

Seriously beautiful work, especially the exhaust staining. This is one aircraft I would love to have flown but arrived a tad too late on the scene. The planes I flew (Willy Victors) were sometimes referred to as,"four spads tied to a dump truck."

There is a sad story about a Vietnamese "friendly" student pilot who destroyed a Skyraider in the runup area at NAS Corpus Christi, Texas in the sixties. He apparently forgot his procedures and, instead of setting 30 inches of manifold pressure to check the mags, pushed the throttle full forward. The Spad's tail lifted and the propeller dug into the tarmac. The pilot froze while the aircraft rocked forward onto the propeller, spun one revolution and crashed to the ground inverted. When the crash crew finally reached the pilot he was in a catatonic state with his hands tightly gripping the controls.

@ltdayan - crikey - not an issue I'm ever likely to have in the average Piper, or Cessna!

The Skyraider is screams 'character' by the bucket load - must have been an interesting aeroplane to fly. But you got to fly the Connie!! :)

Thanks @Jim - just saw your message re. 32SIG - will drop you a reply later today...

Cameron and I got to the RAF Museum Hendon yesterday (via Hannants) - but got back too late to finish the 'Raider - that will be later today. BiG thumbs up to Airfix - Cam got to build a Hurricane at the 'make and take' (and we blagged another for later). I also bought my first Airfix kit in about 30 years in the museum shop - RAF Sabre in some really tiny and obscure scale - I believe it's called 1:72?? ;)

Right - breakfast to cook, then some book reading with Cameron, then Skyraider - there will be RFI photos later today...

Have fun!

Iain
