tommyinuk0
Hi all, So having finished my last 1:24 Spitfire links here hopefully to the RFI posts, http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...4918396&hl= and the WIP posts http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.p...c=80165&hl= I went and brought another MK1 and then also found one on E-Bay which stated it needed a bit of TLC !!! but for a fiver it was a project with my name on it. It was missing parts and so my idea is to use the spares/leftovers, desert bits etc from my original MKV and the new MK1 will be used as a template to copy/scratchbuild parts. I intend to do a seperate WIP page for both as they will be seperate projects, in theory.. So this is what I got in the post! I did ask if I was mad? Thanks for reading Tommy
tommyinuk0
Hi all, I didn't want to add to many pics to the first page as it makes it easier to view. The previous pics were taken in April when I recieved the Spit. I have done some work on her, although it doesn't look a lot! I have hopefully located a set of undercarriage legs and wheels, from a very kind fellow britmodeller. I have stripped the outer loose paint off and began with the cockpit. It was at this point I realised I was missing a seat, seat brackets and the armour plating behind the seat. So I have scratch built the required parts, using my other MK1 as a template, these are on the left in the below pic. The seat on the right and the grey parts have been made from scratch, using plastic card, not bad for my first attempt. So far I am quite enjoying this project, which is why I haven't started the other Spit yet.... Thanks for reading, still not sure on a scheme for this bird yet? MakingModelsAgain
Why do the words 'Pandora' and 'box' spring to mind...? Hehehe.... this looks like a WIP to watch. Are you going to simply renovate or super-detail it/them? Either way, I love the idea of 'upcycling' old kits!
tommyinuk0
Why do the words 'Pandora' and 'box' spring to mind...? Hehehe.... this looks like a WIP to watch. Are you going to simply renovate or super-detail it/them? Either way, I love the idea of 'upcycling' old kits! In this difficult financial climate, it is the way ahead, and greener!! I will add some detail, and may try lots more scratchbuilding no I am getting into that. Will try to keep the pace going so you don't have to wait years!! I have quite a few parts missing and may have to discover a way of painting on 1-24 scale roundals !! but all good models should be a challenge, or we never learn. Help! tommyinuk0
Hi all, Very excited the other day when I recieved the first of two batches of parts from fellow Britmodellers. This first package contained the below items and comes with many, many thanks to Troy Smith for his fantastic help, which is tremendously appreciated. This means that this renovation project will be on its own legs! I have decided on a scheme for this and the Mk I which is yet to be started, however I shall keep these to my self, to allow you to guess as the builds continue. So I have scratch built the seat and for the first time ever attempted to add a Sutton Harness, using Tamiya tape. I am impressed with the outcome, but would appreciate any tips, ways of improving this technique if any of you have any.. I have added some cockpit equipment to the side walls, again scratchbuilt. These are mainly to make the cockpit appear more 'busy' and I still have a few more bits I want to add. Anyway here are some pictures of the progress to date, the last couple are the cockpit placed in the airframe. As I said I am awaiting another package from fellow Britmodeller Dave T who has kindly helped to provide further missing items for this Spitfire project, so thanks to him and a further update when these arrive. Thanks for looking. Many thanks again, Troy and Dave Tommy
tommyinuk0
Hi all, Continued progress on the project, the fuselage halves are together, so everything should move quickly now. Just a few photos to show that after careful analysis the amount of original engine brackets and supports were pretty dire!!! vertually none. See pics to see what survives. Like all good restoration projects, I am trying to retain as much of the original as possible. I have resorted to using the parts which were intended for when a motor was to be placed inside the engine cowling; these made it all more simply. I have built my own engine brackets but mainly to hold the part where the exhausts will be attached to. I will see if I can fit the engine in on some home made bracket. The phots were during a 'dry fit' hence all the masking tape. This next photo shows the amount of original engine brackets left! what was I to affix the engine/cowlings to I thought?? Hope you enjoy the progress to date. Tommy
Dave T
Tommy, P-51 and other bits mailed yesterday, but some 1/24 Spitfire decals didn't arrive in time for me to include them. They are here now though if you need any ? .

Dave T
A guy on eBay is selling them. Item 380446950426 . Auction is for a variety of decals, but if you just want 1/24 (for example) he'll do that. Works out as 60p each...!!!
Jim Saudi
Hi there, I had a similar dilemma as yours. The model was trashed and the props and tailplane were missing. Took the easy option and decided to stick it on a stand. All the marking are painted. Turned out passable! tommyinuk0
Hi all, Firstly to reply to some comments: Steve, it is good to see someone else, who is multi building 1-24 Spitfires. I wonder though who will finish first? Jim, I like what you did to give your Spitfire new life, I like the gloss finish which makes it look like one of those expensive wooden desk models. Very effective, indeed. Dave T, I had a look at the decals on e-bay, thanks a lot. I am undecided as to whether or not I need any? or just delaying another purchase......... So the build continues and a momentous day happened yesterday. Not only did the parcel from Dave T arrive which had essential spares for the project AND also two further 1-24 scale projects! But also the Spitfire was supported by it's own undercarriage which I think must be the first time this century!! The parcel of spares, which arrived with many thanks to Dave. Look daddy I can stand, a proud day. So after making my own way of supporting the part where the engine exhausts would be attached to, I initally was going to seal up all the engine cowlings etc. Then I changed my mind and thought it would be much more pleasing to the eye to be able to see some engine. The old engine would not fit due to my scratch built exhaust bearers. So I had to think radical. If I just had the top cover which came off I would only need to see the top of the engine! Fortunatley this part came off the engine easily and then I just needed a way to fix it to where it should be. I came up with this. And the end result with a bit of engine gubbins down the bottom, to make it look like a full engine. I will add some more detail to fill it out abit later, but I am pleased with the result. Next I could fix the rest of the panels. Next will be attention to the wings, the top parts of these are only taped on at the moment, flaps, tail plane etc, then paint time!! Thanks for looking, feel free to leave comments and CC. Tommy
Jim Saudi
Whaw, this is brill. You're a man after my own heart. This is the type of building I love to do. Magic work. Life would be dull without challenges! Jim

tommyinuk0
02 July 2012. Hi all, Ok so progress has continued and I am pretty pleased with how this pile of scrap has turned out. For the first time it is looking elegant like a Spitfire! This first picture was taken a few days ago and shows the scratch built aileron made of plasic card and the bottom of the cannon, the wing blister made from some old hacked up bombs/fuel tanks. Ignore the roundal, I was trying a new process of hand painting roundals, by cutting masks from Tamiya tape. A good orange undercoat was applied, this was then sanded to see how the huge amounts of filler had beared up, and where needed the offending areas were dealt with the 'Liquid green stuff' filler in a paint form, available from Warhammer shops and from the Citadel range of acrylic paints. The results: Hope you like the progress to date. Thanks for reading this. Tommy

Bengalensis
What a project! How far has it come today? Would a full decal sheet from Trumpeter's MkVb make life easier? tommyinuk0
Hi all, So as promised in some of my RFI posts here is an update. I am pleased with progress and apart from scratchbuilt cannons and the radio mast I think all the parts are there. I have decided on my 'donor' aircraft and am intending to build this model to represent a Malta Spitfire VB, serial EP606 and coded X-P. This was the aircraft of Fg Off Ryan Gosling RCAF of No 229 Sqn based at Krendi, April 1943. I took this from the Osprey Aircraft of the Aces number 83 'Malta Spitfire Aces' for those of you interested the ISBN number is 978-1-84603-305-6. This states that 'by the spring of 1943, No 229 Sqn's Spitfires were mostly painted in faded Dark Earth and Extra Dark Sea Grey, with Azure Blue undersides. EP606 was used by Ace Fg Off Leslie Gosling to down a Ju 88, and share in the destruction of another Junkers bomber with Sgt A J Clayton, on 19 April 1943. This fighter was eventually passed on to the French Air Force postwar'. I have applied the base coats and these will change as the model is weathered etc. I have added the latest pictures below, with a couple of the progress to date. 12 Jun 2012 20 Jun 2012 Jul 2012 15 Oct 2012 Hope you like and feel free as always to leave CC and comments. tommyinuk0
Hi all, So I have noticed a month passes quickly! I have been looking at the Spitfire and the colours it was wearing and decided I wasn't happy with them. So back to the drawing board and I have repainted her in what I think look a lot more realistic coulours. Remember I am after, faded Dark Earth and Extra Dark Sea Grey, with Azure Blue undersides. I think the pics below look a lot better to the eye. I am now all ready for the decals, further pics soon. Let me know your thoughts.
