Really Ugly Aircraft

Looking at the latest Air International and noticed India's upcoming Embraer EMB-145 based AEW&C aircraft.

It may be a very capable platform but is it also the ugliest 'thing' flying today?

What do you think and do you have any rivals to compete?

sadly not in service, but this looks pretty terrible (more ridiculous than ugly perhaps)

seems to be an AEW theme here..!!

I would say that they are svelt and lovely aircraft compared to the retinal cosh that the Indians are about to have. I wonder, did the brief include lack of mpg as a factor?!

Trevor the aesthetically offended

I think Thunder & Lightnings said it best: "In what appeared to be a competition to produce the ugliest aircraft of all time, the Blackburn [YA.7] and Fairey [Gannet] types had now been joined by the Shorts SB.3 - an aircraft of such ugliness that the very air surrounding it recoiled in horror, and thus it had serious problems staying airborne."

I think the Sturgeon looked pretty nice in it's original form.

It was when they added the ASW radar that things went very badly awry:

Hmm, but it was still pretending to be aerodynamic even if it only had looks its designer could love...............

Is that a still from a Gerry Anderson show???

No, ekranoplans exist, and they're amazing creatures. For a real Gerry Anderson job you want the Alexeyev KM. If that's not Zero-X for real, I don't know what is. I can't believe more hasn't been made of these things.

I did see an interesting documentary some years ago on the WIG/ Ekranoplans machines from Russia. There was an enormous one being built but all came to an end because of cash flow problems I recall. But elsewhere and in the states I think, someone was doing one about the size of a small speedboat/seaplane working quite well.

Re the EMB 145 AEW, I saw one doing circuits at Souda Bay on Crete last summer just after we disembarked the Monarch A330. It was a very weird sight and something I didn't know existed!!

Dude, just how much crack were they smoking when they came up with that? It's about as aerodynamic as an office block!
