Iain Ogilvie
And I'm now wondering if I can get the pennies together to buy a share (wanders off to look at the model stash): Flew with my buddy Allan (who has a share already) from White Waltham to a Cub 'Fly In' at Popham and back (really liked the atmosphere at Popham - with members of public allowed air-side and a few stalls (including Aviation Hobby Shop). AndyC
Nice stuff Iain and a great little 'plane! Was it a fly-in at Popham then? I have driven past there often and am always craning my neck Eastbound on the A303 to see what is parked there. Was the AN-2 parked up as it often is? Iain Ogilvie
Hi Andy, Yup - Popham - and if you haven't called in yet you must - *very* friendly! Interesting dog-leg approach to runway 26 to avoid the A303 services and the trees at the end of their car park! Didn't see an AN-2 yesterday... For some unknown reason I found myself humming Glenn Miller tunes last night. May be slow - but bags of character and relatively low-cost flying. AndyC
For some unknown reason I found myself humming Glenn Miller tunes last night. I think I'd give that a miss while in a light plane...
The Cameraman
Hi Iain, in my book the only thing that better's a Cub is a Super Cub and the only thing that betters a Super Cub is a Beaver! Thanks for posting. Edited May 14, 2012 by The Cameraman
xffw45343tg
Looks like great fun. Am I right in thinking you can fly with the hatches open?

Phartycr0c
Thats lovely Iain. as you say a plane full of character and a great view out of the Greenhouse of a cabin. Im currently reading Citzen Soldier by Stephen Ambrose in which the Cub is mentioned loads of times. It was a very well thought of observation platform for the Artillery guys. You Lucky Blighter. Iain Ogilvie
Reggie - my first time in a Cub - but most certainly won't be my last Kirk - we didn't apart from taxiing - but suspect you're right. View out was excellent even when closed... Chris - might be interested in that - how much do you want for it? Phartycr0c - I can certainly see why it was a good tool for the job. Note this one doesn't have the invasion stripes on the upper surface of the wing - apparently to make them less obvious to the German fighters - although getting your gun's to bear on one would be difficult with the Cubs low speed. No protection whatsoever from small arms fire from below... Can't afford to buy into it right now (off around France end of next month with a buddy (and other aircraft from our club) in an ex RAF Bulldog and that has a bit of a 'drink problem' when it comes to AVGAS ) - but long term I'm doing some plotting as the Cub ticks a lot of boxes for me - relatively low cost and cost of operation, bags of character, interesting to fly, it's a 'Permit' a/c (simplifying lots of things) and has a little bit of cool factor in it's original markings... We'll see. Iain Edited May 14, 2012 by Iain (32SIG)
