Mike
A4 Cutting Mat Humbrol There's not normally much to say about a cutting mat, as they are either good quality and feel "right", or rubbish and soon superseded. This mat is of the former stable, and has a nice weighty feel to it, with a non-slip surface, and an almost immediate "healing" of a cut made with a sharp blade. As you can see from the picture, the mat is grey, and is covered with 10mm squares, plus lots more beside. There is a set of scale rulers in 1:76, 1:72, 1:48, 1:32 and 1:24 in metric as well as imperial denominations, plus a triplet of circle template sectioned into 120o, 90o and 72o, which as well as looking pretty, have a function. They can be used to line up your prop blades of 3, 4 and 5 blade types, as well as being of use as a cutting template for the aforementioned angles. Speaking of angles, there are also a pair of diverging lines that are 45o and 30o from the main grid. Conclusion It's a quality product, and almost a shame to get it dirty, which will hide those useful rulers and such. Although the reverse side isn't printed, it does have an identical cutting surface of the same thickness as the front, so could also be used as a cutting surface, perhaps keeping the "front" for special occasions! The only downside of the product seems to be the odd smell that accompanies it out of the package. I'm sure this will dissipate quickly enough, but a good sniff of the mat is enough to make your eyes water. Review sample courtesy of
Dave A
Don't all cutting mats reek? My Fiskars one did, took weeks to fade fully...
prowler0000
It`s a better colour than the Tamiya version, but i`m willing to bet they smell (stink!) the same! it`s not unplesant, but you can guarentee it`s bad for you! Like all fun things....!
