USS Olympia

Recommended Posts

The completed model from the build review HERE A great model, espcially considering the age of the base kit. Encore, (Squadron Productions), should be very proud of this release. This Premium Edition is definately the way to go if you're not really up to scratchbuilding. I really enjoyed building the Olympia even though the instructions are a little difficult and confusing at times, although this may be due to me not being used to the style. It does pay to read through them completely before building begins. Anyway, without further ado, here she is. I hope you like her as much as I do.

Another classy build Dave

Great subject, there's something 'steampunky' about the heavy rivets, layered plates, and general primitiveness design of the ship. They don't mak'em like that anymore. Pre slick & slippery.

Now what other ships like that are there? Zvesda does a few?

Champion!

Thanks Adam

Yeah the old Russian fleet from 1905 which Zvezda do are pretty similar and there are the Bronco Chinese battleships, but there is very little in the way of western warships from pre-1900 in IM. I believe there was a kit of the USS Oregon, but it was so inaccurate and required a lot of moding to get to look anything like the real thing. Oh and Combrig do a nice, if expensive selection of very interesting old ships.

Despite the good photography, it really doesn't bring out just how VERY GOOD this model is. It was great to see it for real the other day.

I like your build Dave, I saw this kit advertised in one of the mags, FSM I think, and I fancied it then but your build has made it a definite future buy! Very, very nice!

Thanks Jockster. If you do get one don't be afraid of using a dremel, as the plastic is quite thick and with care is easily removed.

Thanks Frank, it does seem ot have been risen from the dark recesses of the RFI section. :D

Callum, she sure does. I bought a glass case for her and she does get a lot of attention from admirers. Being white and beige she really stands out from the crowd of grey and even outshines the dazzle painted ships.
